Lost Castle 2 is Hunter Studio's 2D beat 'em up roguelite, in Early Access from 24 July 2024 until its 1.0 release in June 2026. A single run pushes from the Black Forest through the Abandoned Village and Crystal Mountain to the Black Castle, pulling from more than 200 weapons and armor pieces and over 130 treasures. Up to four players share a run through online co-op, LAN, or shared and split screen.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Black Forest)

The opening area and the one you will replay most. Three of the run's bosses sit here, so it is where you learn which weapon type you actually enjoy before committing gold at camp.

Level/Difficulty: Run stage 1 of 4 Key Rewards: First weapon drops, early Soul Stones, the gold that funds camp upgrades

What to Do in Black Forest

  1. Learn Soul Inscription weapon builds. Every weapon category carries its own Soul Inscription, and Soul Stones do nothing until the matching inscription is unlocked. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Dual blade rusher as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Soul Stones are inert until the matching weapon's Soul Inscription is unlocked, so socketing them early wastes them. Pick one weapon type, unlock its inscription, then feed it every stone you find.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Katana or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Soul Inscription weapon builds fundamentals
  • Dual blade rusher selected and functional
  • Black Forest main content cleared
  • Ready for Abandoned Village

Phase 2: Early Game (Abandoned Village)

The second area, built around a cemetery. Enemy density climbs sharply here, which is where treasure choices that ignore your damage type start to cost you the run.

Level/Difficulty: Run stage 2 of 4 Key Rewards: Mid-run treasures, boss relics for the collection, armor upgrades

What to Do in Abandoned Village

  1. Work on Elemental damage on weapons. Weapons carry elemental effects such as Frost, and element choice usually decides more than the base damage number on the last two areas. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Katana if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Camp upgrades are the real progression curve. A run that dies in the Abandoned Village but banks a few thousand gold moves you forward more than a lucky run you failed to convert.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Crystal Mountain.
  5. Consider whether Sword and shield bruiser might suit your playstyle better than Dual blade rusher.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Elemental damage on weapons integrated into gameplay
  • Katana acquired
  • Abandoned Village fully cleared
  • Ready for Crystal Mountain

Phase 3: Mid Game (Crystal Mountain)

The third area and the difficulty step most solo players stall on. Elemental damage matters more here than anywhere earlier, so a weapon with no element is a real handicap.

Level/Difficulty: Run stage 3 of 4 Key Rewards: Higher tier weapons, Soul Stones worth socketing, elemental gear

What to Do in Crystal Mountain

  1. Master Treasure stacking inside a run. The store page counts over 130 treasures with distinct effects, all of which vanish when the run ends. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Dual blades. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. For the Wandering Knight, the board consensus is a defensive Ironbone Brute setup with Frost, which lets you eat the second phase instead of dodging every swing.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Camp upgrades between runs for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Treasure stacking inside a run mastered
  • Dual blades acquired or in progress
  • Crystal Mountain fully cleared
  • Ready for Black Castle

Phase 4: Late Game (Black Castle)

The final area, reached past the Wandering Knight bridge fight that the Steam boards treat as the real gatekeeper. Both of its phases punish greedy attack strings.

Level/Difficulty: Run stage 4 of 4 Key Rewards: Run completion, boss relics, the unlocks that feed the next run

What to Do in Black Castle

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Sword and shield bruiser or Dual blade rusher with optimized gear.
  2. Dual blades should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Movement is faster when you chain dodge roll into jump repeatedly rather than running, unless you have already stacked movement speed treasures.
  4. Four-player co-op optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into The camp.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Dual blades upgraded to max
  • Black Castle fully cleared
  • Ready for The camp

Phase 5: Endgame (The camp)

The hub between runs, where banked gold becomes permanent upgrades and Memory Shards unlock extras such as the hidden Mage Tower. Recruitable helpers are posted on the bulletin board.

Level/Difficulty: Between every run Key Rewards: Permanent stat upgrades, shop access, Memory Shard unlocks

What to Do in The camp

  1. The camp tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Treasures do not carry between runs, so evaluate each pickup against the build you have right now rather than the one you wanted at the start.
  3. The endgame loop: run The camp, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Musket shooter for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where Four-player co-op mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • The camp fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Hoarding Soul Stones before the matching Soul Inscription is unlocked, which leaves them doing nothing
  • Saving gold for a future run instead of buying camp upgrades now
  • Grabbing every treasure offered rather than the ones that push one damage type
  • Trying the Wandering Knight on a glass cannon build with no defensive option
  • Sticking with the bow solo on the highest difficulty because it felt fine on lower ones

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Soul Stones are inert until the matching weapon's Soul Inscription is unlocked, so socketing them early wastes them. Pick one weapon type, unlock its inscription, then feed it every stone you find.
  2. Camp upgrades are the real progression curve. A run that dies in the Abandoned Village but banks a few thousand gold moves you forward more than a lucky run you failed to convert.
  3. For the Wandering Knight, the board consensus is a defensive Ironbone Brute setup with Frost, which lets you eat the second phase instead of dodging every swing.
  4. Movement is faster when you chain dodge roll into jump repeatedly rather than running, unless you have already stacked movement speed treasures.
  5. Treasures do not carry between runs, so evaluate each pickup against the build you have right now rather than the one you wanted at the start.
