Marvel Rivals is NetEase's free-to-play 6v6 hero shooter featuring Marvel characters, competing directly with Overwatch in the team-based FPS space. The game differentiates itself with destructible environments that reshape maps mid-match, and Team-Up abilities that trigger powerful combo attacks between specific hero pairs. With a roster spanning Avengers, X-Men, Guardians, and villains, each hero plays distinctly with abilities faithful to their comic book counterparts. The game launched in December 2024 and has maintained a strong player base with regular seasonal hero additions and balance updates.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Tokyo 2099
A futuristic cyberpunk cityscape with multi-level buildings and destructible neon signage. Verticality favors mobile heroes like Spider-Man and Iron Man. The central bridge is the main chokepoint with destructible railings.
Level/Difficulty: All ranks Key Rewards: Standard match rewards, seasonal XP
What to Do in Tokyo 2099
- Learn hero abilities. Each hero has a primary fire, secondary fire, 2-3 abilities on cooldowns, and an Ultimate that charges from dealing/receiving damage. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Duelist as your starting role. It's the most forgiving option.
- Check for Team-Up synergies in the hero select screen. A Spider-Man + Venom duo or Thor + Hulk duo gains a powerful bonus ability that can swing entire teamfights.
- Acquire your first weapons upgrade — Iron Man Repulsors or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand hero abilities fundamentals
- Duelist selected and functional
- Tokyo 2099 main content cleared
- Ready for Yggsgard
Phase 2: Early Game — Yggsgard
An Asgardian realm with golden architecture and sweeping bridges. Long sightlines favor ranged Duelists. The Bifrost bridge objective area is wide and open, making it hard for flankers but great for Vanguard-led pushes.
Level/Difficulty: All ranks Key Rewards: Standard match rewards, seasonal XP
What to Do in Yggsgard
- Work on team composition. Teams of 6 ideally run 2 Vanguards, 2 Duelists, and 2 Strategists, though flexible compositions work. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Iron Man Repulsors if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Destroy walls strategically to create new sightlines into enemy positions. A Hulk or Thor can punch through walls to surprise backline Strategists.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Shin-Shibuya.
- Consider whether Vanguard might suit your playstyle better than Duelist.
Phase 2 Checklist
- team composition integrated into gameplay
- Iron Man Repulsors acquired
- Yggsgard fully cleared
- Ready for Shin-Shibuya
Phase 3: Mid Game — Shin-Shibuya
A neon-lit Japanese district with tight alleyways and rooftop access. CQB-heavy map where melee Duelists and Vanguards dominate. Destructible shop fronts create unexpected flanking routes mid-match.
Level/Difficulty: All ranks Key Rewards: Standard match rewards, seasonal XP
What to Do in Shin-Shibuya
- Master destructible environments. Walls, floors, and structures on maps can be destroyed by abilities and gunfire, creating new sightlines and flanking routes mid-match. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Spider-Man Web Shooters. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
- Strategists should always position behind at least one Vanguard. Dying first as a healer costs your team the fight more than any other death.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in team-up abilities for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- destructible environments mastered
- Spider-Man Web Shooters acquired or in progress
- Shin-Shibuya fully cleared
- Ready for Midtown
Phase 4: Late Game — Midtown
Classic New York City streets with familiar Marvel landmarks. Balanced map with both long sightlines and close-quarters sections. The Daily Bugle building provides excellent high-ground control for Duelists.
Level/Difficulty: All ranks Key Rewards: Standard match rewards, seasonal XP
What to Do in Midtown
- Finalize your build. You should be running Vanguard or Duelist with optimized gear.
- Spider-Man Web Shooters should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Ultimate economy wins matches. Track enemy Ultimate status by counting time since their last use. Coordinate your team's Ultimates rather than using them one at a time.
- map control optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Klyntar.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Spider-Man Web Shooters upgraded to max
- Midtown fully cleared
- Ready for Klyntar
Phase 5: Endgame — Klyntar
The symbiote homeworld with organic terrain and dark aesthetics. Low visibility sections favor close-range heroes. The map's destructible organic walls regrow over time, a unique mechanic not found on other maps.
Level/Difficulty: All ranks Key Rewards: Standard match rewards, seasonal XP
What to Do in Klyntar
- Klyntar tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Peel for your Strategists. If Spider-Man is diving your healer and no one helps, you lose. Vanguards should save CC abilities to protect supports.
- The endgame loop: run Klyntar, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Support for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where map control mastery separates good players from great ones.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Klyntar fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Ignoring Team-Up abilities by picking heroes with no synergies. Free bonus abilities from Team-Up pairs give a significant advantage that random hero picks miss.
- Duelists chasing kills into the enemy backline alone. Overextending for a kill trade (1 for 1) is never worth it if you leave your team 5v5 without damage.
- Strategists trying to DPS instead of healing. Your healing output determines how long your team can fight. Dead teammates deal zero damage.
- Never using destructible environment to your advantage. Most players fight around walls instead of through them. Breaking terrain to create unexpected angles wins rounds.
- Stacking all Ultimates at once. Using 4 Ultimates to win a fight that only required 2 wastes your advantage for the next fight.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Check for Team-Up synergies in the hero select screen. A Spider-Man + Venom duo or Thor + Hulk duo gains a powerful bonus ability that can swing entire teamfights.
- Destroy walls strategically to create new sightlines into enemy positions. A Hulk or Thor can punch through walls to surprise backline Strategists.
- Strategists should always position behind at least one Vanguard. Dying first as a healer costs your team the fight more than any other death.
- Ultimate economy wins matches. Track enemy Ultimate status by counting time since their last use. Coordinate your team's Ultimates rather than using them one at a time.
- Peel for your Strategists. If Spider-Man is diving your healer and no one helps, you lose. Vanguards should save CC abilities to protect supports.
