Legendary Edition bundles Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 into one launcher with more than 40 pieces of DLC, and BioWare released it on 14 May 2021. Only Pinnacle Station is missing, because its source data was corrupt, and the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer was left out entirely. Powers, ammunition and weapon rules differ between the three games, so a plan built in the first one does not carry forward unchanged.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Eden Prime)

The opening mission of the first game and the beacon that starts the whole trilogy. It also returns in Mass Effect 3's From Ashes DLC, which is where Javik joins the squad.

Level/Difficulty: Mass Effect 1, levels 1 to 5 Key Rewards: The Prothean beacon vision, early squadmates, Javik in Mass Effect 3

What to Do in Eden Prime

  1. Learn Six classes across all three games. Soldier, Engineer, Adept, Infiltrator, Sentinel and Vanguard appear in every game, but their kits change between them. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Infiltrator as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Commit to Paragon or Renegade rather than splitting the difference. The two bars fill independently, and the biggest conversation checks in Mass Effect 2 and 3 need one bar high rather than two bars halfway.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Sniper rifles or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Six classes across all three games fundamentals
  • Infiltrator selected and functional
  • Eden Prime main content cleared
  • Ready for Virmire

Phase 2: Early Game (Virmire)

The mission that forces the trilogy's first permanent loss: one of Kaidan or Ashley dies here, and the survivor carries into Mass Effect 2 and 3.

Level/Difficulty: Mass Effect 1, mid to late campaign Key Rewards: Saren's cure research, a permanent squad decision, major Paragon and Renegade checks

What to Do in Virmire

  1. Work on Power Combos from primer and detonator. Mass Effect 3 formalised the system: a primer such as Warp, Pull, Singularity, Incinerate or Cryo Blast marks the target, then a detonator such as Throw, Shockwave or Overload sets off a Biotic Explosion, Fire Explosion, Cryo Explosion or Tech Burst. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Sniper rifles if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Play the trilogy in order and import each save. Decisions such as who dies on Virmire, who survives the suicide mission and what happens to the Collector Base all propagate forward, and starting fresh in Mass Effect 3 discards years of consequences.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to The Citadel.
  5. Consider whether Soldier might suit your playstyle better than Infiltrator.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Power Combos from primer and detonator integrated into gameplay
  • Sniper rifles acquired
  • Virmire fully cleared
  • Ready for The Citadel

Phase 3: Mid Game (The Citadel)

The hub across all three games, home to the Council, the shops and most of the trilogy's side content. Its role shifts each game, from political centre to refugee hub.

Level/Difficulty: All three games Key Rewards: Side missions, squadmate conversations, War Assets in Mass Effect 3

What to Do in The Citadel

  1. Master Overheating guns then thermal clips. Mass Effect 1 weapons overheat instead of running dry, and the Legendary Edition also lifts that game's class weapon restrictions so any class can carry any gun. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Assault rifles. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. In Mass Effect 1, take advantage of the Legendary Edition lifting class weapon restrictions. Every class can now carry every weapon type, which was not true in the 2007 release.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Paragon and Renegade with imported saves for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Overheating guns then thermal clips mastered
  • Assault rifles acquired or in progress
  • The Citadel fully cleared
  • Ready for Tuchanka

Phase 4: Late Game (Tuchanka)

The krogan homeworld, seen in Mass Effect 2 for Grunt's loyalty mission and again in Mass Effect 3 for the genophage arc with Mordin and Wrex.

Level/Difficulty: Mass Effect 2 loyalty missions, Mass Effect 3 priority missions Key Rewards: Grunt's loyalty, the genophage decision, large War Asset swings

What to Do in Tuchanka

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Soldier or Infiltrator with optimized gear.
  2. Assault rifles should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Learn the primer and detonator pairs before you reach Mass Effect 3. Warp then Throw for a Biotic Explosion, Incinerate then Concussive Shot for a Fire Explosion, and Overload on a target hit by another tech power for a Tech Burst.
  4. War Assets and Effective Military Strength optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Rannoch.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Assault rifles upgraded to max
  • Tuchanka fully cleared
  • Ready for Rannoch

Phase 5: Endgame (Rannoch)

The quarian homeworld and the payoff to the geth and quarian conflict running since the first game. The outcome depends on choices made across all three.

Level/Difficulty: Mass Effect 3, late campaign Key Rewards: Peace between quarians and geth if your history allows it, Tali's arc, major War Assets

What to Do in Rannoch

  1. Rannoch tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Watch weapon weight in Mass Effect 3. Carrying a sniper rifle, shotgun, assault rifle and pistol at once wrecks power recharge, so power focused classes should leave most of the loadout in the locker.
  3. The endgame loop: run Rannoch, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Engineer for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where War Assets and Effective Military Strength mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Rannoch fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Skipping Mass Effect 1 because its combat feels dated. Every major relationship and decision in the later games traces back to it, and the Legendary Edition already reworked its combat and level curve.
  • Splitting morality points evenly. Halfway up both bars fails the checks that a fully committed Paragon or Renegade passes, and those checks resolve some of the trilogy's largest conflicts.
  • Rushing the Mass Effect 2 endgame before loyalty missions. Disloyal squadmates die in the suicide mission and never appear in Mass Effect 3.
  • Overloading a biotic build with heavy weapons in Mass Effect 3. Weight directly slows power recharge, which is the resource an Adept or Sentinel actually fights with.
  • Expecting the multiplayer. Mass Effect 3's multiplayer is not part of the Legendary Edition, and single player War Assets were rebalanced to compensate.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Commit to Paragon or Renegade rather than splitting the difference. The two bars fill independently, and the biggest conversation checks in Mass Effect 2 and 3 need one bar high rather than two bars halfway.
  2. Play the trilogy in order and import each save. Decisions such as who dies on Virmire, who survives the suicide mission and what happens to the Collector Base all propagate forward, and starting fresh in Mass Effect 3 discards years of consequences.
  3. In Mass Effect 1, take advantage of the Legendary Edition lifting class weapon restrictions. Every class can now carry every weapon type, which was not true in the 2007 release.
  4. Learn the primer and detonator pairs before you reach Mass Effect 3. Warp then Throw for a Biotic Explosion, Incinerate then Concussive Shot for a Fire Explosion, and Overload on a target hit by another tech power for a Tech Burst.
  5. Watch weapon weight in Mass Effect 3. Carrying a sniper rifle, shotgun, assault rifle and pistol at once wrecks power recharge, so power focused classes should leave most of the loadout in the locker.
