Melvor Idle is an idle RPG from Games by Malcs that borrows RuneScape's skill structure and removes the clicking entirely. You select one skill, it runs while you do something else, and every action also raises a per action Mastery level that changes how that action behaves. Combat runs on the same clock, which is why Damage Reduction and Auto Eat matter far more than raw damage numbers.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Melee
Melee is a top-performing option in Melvor Idle.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Bronze Equipment | The opening Smithing tier, made from Bronze Bars. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Single active skill | You train one skill at a time and it keeps running while the game is closed, so progress is about choosing what to leave on rather than clicking faster. |
How to Play Melee
Melee focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Bronze Equipment does the damage and Single active skill keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Ranged
Ranged is a strong option in Melvor Idle.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Steel Equipment | The first tier that behaves like real armour, and the point where Damage Reduction becomes a number worth reading rather than ignoring. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Mastery levels and the Mastery Pool | Every individual action, each log, each ore, each fish, carries its own Mastery level up to 99, and the same experience also fills a per skill Mastery Pool. |
How to Play Ranged
Ranged focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Pair Steel Equipment with Mastery levels and the Mastery Pool and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Magic
Magic is a strong option in Melvor Idle.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Mithril Equipment | A mid tier smithed set that carries you through most standard combat areas while you build toward Adamant and Rune. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Combat triangle | Melee beats Ranged, Ranged beats Magic and Magic beats Melee, applied through accuracy, damage and damage reduction modifiers. |
How to Play Magic
Magic focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Combat triangle covers the gap Mithril Equipment leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Slayer
Slayer is a specialized option in Melvor Idle.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Rune Equipment | A high smithed tier and the set most worth upgrading with Gold Bars at the Shop, since the upgraded pieces add meaningful Damage Reduction. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Damage Reduction and Auto Eat | Damage Reduction is the most important combat stat in the game and the hardest to stack. |
How to Play Slayer
Slayer focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: This one leans on Damage Reduction and Auto Eat rather than raw numbers, and Rune Equipment is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Alt. Magic
Alt. Magic is a specialized option in Melvor Idle.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Dragon Equipment | Drop based rather than smithed, carrying the strongest defensive stats in the core progression and the usual entry ticket to Volcanic Cave. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Dungeon clear requirements | Dungeons are fixed monster sequences that have to be cleared in one attempt, and later ones unlock through repetition rather than levels. |
How to Play Alt. Magic
Alt. Magic focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Dragon Equipment and Dungeon clear requirements pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Ranged: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Melee once you understand core mechanics and have access to Bronze Equipment
- Keep a Magic setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Alt. Magic for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Auto Eat is the single biggest early purchase in the game. Tier I costs 1,000,000 GP from the Shop and converts combat from something you supervise into something you leave running, so bank toward it ahead of gear upgrades.
- Damage Reduction beats every other combat stat. An area is safe to idle when your Hitpoints times the Auto Eat threshold exceeds the enemy max hit after your Damage Reduction is applied, which is why a defensive set often out-earns an offensive one.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
