Melvor Idle is an idle RPG from Games by Malcs that borrows RuneScape's skill structure and removes the clicking entirely. You select one skill, it runs while you do something else, and every action also raises a per action Mastery level that changes how that action behaves. Combat runs on the same clock, which is why Damage Reduction and Auto Eat matter far more than raw damage numbers.

These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.

Essential Tips

1. Auto Eat is the single biggest early purchase in the game

Auto Eat is the single biggest early purchase in the game. Tier I costs 1,000,000 GP from the Shop and converts combat from something you supervise into something you leave running, so bank toward it ahead of gear upgrades.

2. Damage Reduction beats every other combat stat

Damage Reduction beats every other combat stat. An area is safe to idle when your Hitpoints times the Auto Eat threshold exceeds the enemy max hit after your Damage Reduction is applied, which is why a defensive set often out-earns an offensive one.

3. Match the combat triangle before you match the gear tier

Match the combat triangle before you match the gear tier. Ranged against Magic enemies, Magic against Melee and Melee against Ranged gives you accuracy and damage at once, and it costs nothing.

4. Upgrade armour with Silver and Gold Bars rather than waiting for the next metal

Upgrade armour with Silver and Gold Bars rather than waiting for the next metal. The upgraded version of a lower tier piece frequently carries more Damage Reduction than the plain piece one tier above it.

5. Mastery experience is never wasted on cheap actions

Mastery experience is never wasted on cheap actions. Every action feeds that skill's Mastery Pool, and the pool checkpoints grant bonuses across the entire skill, so grinding low tier logs or ores still pays out.

6. Volcanic Cave has to be cleared 100 times before Infernal Stronghold unlocks, and level 75 Slayer is required as well

Volcanic Cave has to be cleared 100 times before Infernal Stronghold unlocks, and level 75 Slayer is required as well. Start the Slayer levels early rather than discovering the requirement after your hundredth clear.

7. Prayer is the cheapest offence and defence available if you are already killing things that drop Bones

Prayer is the cheapest offence and defence available if you are already killing things that drop Bones. Bury everything from Golbin Village and Dragon Valley instead of selling it for a handful of GP.

8. Offline progress runs whatever you left selected, so before closing the game pick the action with the longest useful runtime rather than the one that finishes soonest

9. Farming and Township keep ticking while you train something else, which makes them the two skills to establish first

Farming and Township keep ticking while you train something else, which makes them the two skills to establish first. Everything else competes for the single active slot.

10. Alt

Alt. Magic turns effort in one skill into progress in another, such as smelting ore into bars through Magic instead of the furnace. It burns runes, so pair it with Runecrafting rather than buying every rune with GP.

Advanced Strategies

Build Optimization

The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.

For Melee (A-Tier):

  • Focus on Single active skill combinations for maximum output.
  • Core gear: Bronze Equipment
  • Stat priority: Offensive stats first

For Ranged (A-Tier):

  • Versatile approach that handles any situation.
  • Core gear: Steel Equipment
  • Stat priority: Balanced stats

Mechanic Interactions

Understanding how Melvor Idle's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.

Single active skill + Mastery levels and the Mastery Pool: You train one skill at a time and it keeps running while the game is closed, so progress is about choosing what to leave on rather than clicking faster. Combined with Mastery levels and the Mastery Pool, every individual action, each log, each ore, each fish, carries its own mastery level up to 99, and the same experience also fills a per skill mastery pool.

Combat triangle + Damage Reduction and Auto Eat: Melee beats Ranged, Ranged beats Magic and Magic beats Melee, applied through accuracy, damage and damage reduction modifiers. When paired with Damage Reduction and Auto Eat, damage reduction is the most important combat stat in the game and the hardest to stack.

Dungeon clear requirements scaling: Dungeons are fixed monster sequences that have to be cleared in one attempt, and later ones unlock through repetition rather than levels. Volcanic Cave must be cleared 100 times, alongside level 75 Slayer, before Infernal Stronghold opens.

Equipment Efficiency

EquipmentBest Use CaseWhy
Bronze EquipmentThe first hour, and cheap Smithing Mastery experience. The opening Smithing tier, made from Bronze Bars.
Steel EquipmentGolbin Village and the first Slayer tasks. The first tier that behaves like real armour, and the point where Damage Reduction becomes a number worth reading rather than ignoring.
Mithril EquipmentBandit Hideout and mid level dungeon attempts.A mid tier smithed set that carries you through most standard combat areas while you build toward Adamant and Rune.
Rune EquipmentThe long stretch between mid game areas and your first Dragon pieces.A high smithed tier and the set most worth upgrading with Gold Bars at the Shop, since the upgraded pieces add meaningful Damage Reduction.
Dragon EquipmentDragon Valley and the run at Malcs for the Fire Cape.Drop based rather than smithed, carrying the strongest defensive stats in the core progression and the usual entry ticket to Volcanic Cave.

Location Efficiency

Farmlands (Combat level 1 to 20): The first combat area, holding Plants, Chickens, Cows and the Farmer line. Master Farmers are the reason to linger, because their seed drops feed the Farming skill for a long time.

Golbin Village (Combat level 10 to 30): Golbins in volume, the natural second stop, and a sensible place to bank Bones while your armour catches up with your ambitions.

Bandit Hideout (Mid game combat levels): Human enemies that hit noticeably harder than anything in the first two areas. This is where Damage Reduction starts deciding whether an area can be idled at all.

Dragon Valley (High combat levels): Dragons with high max hits. You want strong Damage Reduction and a deep Hitpoints pool before leaving this one running unattended overnight.

Volcanic Cave (Late game, high Damage Reduction required): A Master dungeon of 8 monsters ending with Malcs, the Guardian of Melvor, awarding an Elite Chest and the Fire Cape. Clearing it 100 times, with level 75 Slayer, unlocks Infernal Stronghold.

Mistakes Even Veterans Make

  1. Chasing higher weapon tiers while Damage Reduction is still in single digits.
  2. Fighting Magic enemies with Magic and giving up the triangle advantage for free.
  3. Selling Bones for GP instead of burying them for Prayer levels.
  4. Idling an area whose max hit outpaces your Auto Eat threshold, then logging back in dead.
  5. Hoarding GP for equipment instead of buying Auto Eat Tier I at 1,000,000.

Pro Quick Tips

  • Auto Eat is the single biggest early purchase in the game. Tier I costs 1,000,000 GP from the Shop and converts combat from something you supervise into something you leave running, so bank toward it ahead of gear upgrades.
  • Damage Reduction beats every other combat stat. An area is safe to idle when your Hitpoints times the Auto Eat threshold exceeds the enemy max hit after your Damage Reduction is applied, which is why a defensive set often out-earns an offensive one.
  • Match the combat triangle before you match the gear tier. Ranged against Magic enemies, Magic against Melee and Melee against Ranged gives you accuracy and damage at once, and it costs nothing.
  • Start with Ranged, switch to Melee when ready
  • Invest in Bronze Equipment above everything else
  • Clear areas in order: Farmlands → Golbin Village → Bandit Hideout → Dragon Valley → Volcanic Cave. See our maps guide
  • Single active skill + Mastery levels and the Mastery Pool together are stronger than either alone
