Visual Concepts shipped NBA 2K25 on September 6, 2024 with roughly 9,000 fresh ProPLAY animations pulled from real NBA broadcast footage. The headline addition is Pro Stick Rhythm Shooting, which asks you to pull the right stick down and push it back up in time with a player's actual release. The badge list was cut to 40 and capped with a new Legend tier that only opens once the matching attribute reaches 99.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (MyCAREER)
The single player and online career built around your MyPLAYER, with more than 100 archetype names generated from your attribute spread. Cap Breakers and Badge Elevators are earned here.
Level/Difficulty: 60 to 99 overall MyPLAYER Key Rewards: Attribute upgrades, Cap Breakers, Badge Elevators, animation unlocks
What to Do in MyCAREER
- Learn Pro Stick Rhythm Shooting. Pull the right stick down to start the shot, then push it up as the player hits the set point of his real release. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Small Ball Four as your starting role. See our builds guide for why.
- Decide between Rhythm Shooting and the standard button release in Learn 2K rather than in a Rec game. Rhythm Shooting rewards matching a specific player's tempo, so it feels wrong on any jumpshot animation you have not practised with, and swapping mid session wrecks your muscle memory.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Posterizer or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Pro Stick Rhythm Shooting fundamentals
- Small Ball Four selected and functional
- MyCAREER main content cleared
- Ready for The City
Phase 2: Early Game (The City)
The rebuilt online hub on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, where park runs, Rec and Pro-Am matchmaking live alongside affiliations and side quests.
Level/Difficulty: Any MyPLAYER overall Key Rewards: Rep, VC, seasonal cosmetics, matchmaking access
What to Do in The City
- Work on ProPLAY animation sourcing. About 9,000 animations were converted from actual NBA footage, including 1,500 dribble moves, 1,100 signature shots and over 1,300 off ball actions. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Posterizer if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- The Low Risk Reward Shot Timing profile is forgiving and pays out on shot quality, while High Risk Reward gives you green or miss. Pick High Risk Reward only if you are consistently greening in practice, because it removes the partial credit that carries most players through park games.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to MyTEAM.
- Consider whether Rim Attacker might suit your playstyle better than Small Ball Four.
Phase 2 Checklist
- ProPLAY animation sourcing integrated into gameplay
- Posterizer acquired
- The City fully cleared
- Ready for MyTEAM
Phase 3: Mid Game (MyTEAM)
Card collecting mode, this year carrying Breakout, Showdown, Triple Threat Park and King of the Court on top of Domination and Salary Cap play. The Auction House returned in this entry.
Level/Difficulty: Any card collection size Key Rewards: Player cards, packs, MyTEAM REP perks, Exhibition mission rewards
What to Do in MyTEAM
- Master Five tier badge progression. Every badge climbs Bronze, Silver, Gold, Hall of Fame and Legend. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Limitless Range. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Badges now progress from the actions you perform, so a badge you never use stays at Bronze forever. Build a shot diet that matches your badge list rather than equipping badges you like the sound of.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Takeover meter and abilities for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Five tier badge progression mastered
- Limitless Range acquired or in progress
- MyTEAM fully cleared
- Ready for MyNBA Eras
Phase 4: Late Game (MyNBA Eras)
Franchise play started in a historical season. The Magic vs Bird Era opens in 1983, the Jordan Era in 1991, the Kobe Era in 2002, and the Steph Era covers the 2016 to 2017 Warriors.
Level/Difficulty: 1983 to present day Key Rewards: Era accurate rosters, draft classes, expansion and relocation control
What to Do in MyNBA Eras
- Finalize your build. You should be running Rim Attacker or Small Ball Four with optimized gear.
- Limitless Range should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Legend tier needs a 99 in the relevant attribute, and Cap Breakers are the only route past the caps set at build creation. Plan which single attribute you intend to push to 99 before you finalise a build, since spreading points evenly locks you out of Legend entirely.
- Cap Breakers and Badge Elevators optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into The W.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Limitless Range upgraded to max
- MyNBA Eras fully cleared
- Ready for The W
Phase 5: Endgame (The W)
The WNBA career mode, running its own player build, its own progression track and both online and offline paths separate from MyCAREER.
Level/Difficulty: Rookie to franchise cornerstone Key Rewards: WNBA badges, endorsements, W Online rewards
What to Do in The W
- The W tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- On defense, the right stick now slides you laterally to cut off a drive. Use it to angle a ball handler toward help instead of holding the left stick and hoping the animation wins.
- The endgame loop: run The W, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Paint Beast for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Cap Breakers and Badge Elevators mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- The W fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Spreading attribute points evenly so no rating reaches 99, which locks the build out of every Legend badge
- Turning on High Risk Reward timing before greening consistently in practice, then missing wide open looks
- Equipping badges the build never uses, leaving them stuck at Bronze all season
- Jumping early on contests instead of staying vertical, giving up both the layup and the foul
- Buying packs in MyTEAM before checking the Auction House, where the same cards often go cheaper
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Decide between Rhythm Shooting and the standard button release in Learn 2K rather than in a Rec game. Rhythm Shooting rewards matching a specific player's tempo, so it feels wrong on any jumpshot animation you have not practised with, and swapping mid session wrecks your muscle memory.
- The Low Risk Reward Shot Timing profile is forgiving and pays out on shot quality, while High Risk Reward gives you green or miss. Pick High Risk Reward only if you are consistently greening in practice, because it removes the partial credit that carries most players through park games.
- Badges now progress from the actions you perform, so a badge you never use stays at Bronze forever. Build a shot diet that matches your badge list rather than equipping badges you like the sound of.
- Legend tier needs a 99 in the relevant attribute, and Cap Breakers are the only route past the caps set at build creation. Plan which single attribute you intend to push to 99 before you finalise a build, since spreading points evenly locks you out of Legend entirely.
- On defense, the right stick now slides you laterally to cut off a drive. Use it to angle a ball handler toward help instead of holding the left stick and hoping the animation wins.
