Whether you want to be a trader hauling cargo between systems, a fighter dogfighting pirates, or an explorer cataloguing alien life, No Man's Sky supports it all with deep interconnected systems.

Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

S-Tier: Scatter Blaster

A shotgun-style multitool weapon devastating at close range against biological threats and Sentinels. With three S-class Scatter Blaster modules, it one-shots most enemies. The spread pattern makes it forgiving to aim. Best used in caves and tight spaces where enemies can't evade.

A-Tier: Boltcaster

The default multitool weapon — a rapid-fire projectile gun. Serviceable but outclassed by the Scatter Blaster for damage and the Neutron Cannon for AoE. Useful early game before better options unlock. Three S-class modules make it viable throughout.

Equipment Progression Path

The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:

  1. Starting gear → Enough to clear Starting Planet
  2. Boltcaster → Your first real upgrade, available early
  3. Pulse Spitter → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
  4. Scatter Blaster → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
  5. Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous

Equipment Tips

  • Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying — one strong option beats three mediocre ones.
  • Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
  • Install three S-class Scanner modules in your multitool — each one multiplies scan rewards. With three good ones, a single rare fauna scan can pay 400,000 units, making exploration the most profitable activity.
  • Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
