No Man's Sky Walkthrough — Start to Endgame

Step-by-step No Man's Sky walkthrough covering every phase from first session to endgame. Complete progression guide with milestones and checklists.

No Man's Sky is the ultimate redemption story in gaming — launching to massive disappointment in 2016 and transforming into one of the most content-rich space exploration games through years of free updates. The game generates 18 quintillion unique planets with procedural flora, fauna, and terrain. Post-update, it includes base building, fleet management, living ships, settlement governance, expeditions, and full multiplayer co-op. Whether you want to be a trader hauling cargo between systems, a fighter dogfighting pirates, or an explorer cataloguing alien life, No Man's Sky supports it all with deep interconnected systems.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Starting Planet

Your first planet is always moderately hostile — not a paradise but not immediately lethal. It teaches basic survival: mining resources, managing hazard protection, crafting, and repairing your ship. Leave as soon as your ship is functional to find better worlds.

Level/Difficulty: Tutorial (first 1-2 hours) Key Rewards: Basic crafting recipes, ship repair, Hermetic Seal and other launch components

What to Do in Starting Planet

  1. Learn procedural generation. Every planet, creature, plant, and ship is procedurally generated using seed-based algorithms. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Fighter as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
  3. Install three S-class Scanner modules in your multitool — each one multiplies scan rewards. With three good ones, a single rare fauna scan can pay 400,000 units, making exploration the most profitable activity.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Boltcaster or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand procedural generation fundamentals
  • Fighter selected and functional
  • Starting Planet main content cleared
  • Ready for Space Station

Phase 2: Early Game — Space Station

Every inhabited system has a space station with vendors, mission board, upgrade module vendors, and a teleporter. The Cartographer sells planetary charts. Technology merchants sell S-class upgrade modules for Nanites. Mission board jobs are the primary Nanite income source early game.

Level/Difficulty: All game phases Key Rewards: S-class upgrade modules, missions for Nanites, trade terminal, teleporter access

What to Do in Space Station

  1. Work on base building. Bases are built from modular pieces including wood, metal, stone, and alloy components. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Boltcaster if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Technology modules installed in adjacent slots (touching each other) get a synergy bonus shown by colored borders. Always arrange your three S-class modules in a connected group for maximum stat boost.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Anomaly.
  5. Consider whether Explorer might suit your playstyle better than Fighter.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • base building integrated into gameplay
  • Boltcaster acquired
  • Space Station fully cleared
  • Ready for Anomaly

Phase 3: Mid Game — Anomaly

The multiplayer hub summoned via the quick menu in any system. Contains the Nexus (multiplayer missions), technology vendors with critical unlocked recipes (Atlas Pass, Exocraft, etc.), and appearance modifiers. The Anomaly is where you unlock most advanced blueprints using Salvaged Data.

Level/Difficulty: After first warp Key Rewards: Blueprint unlocks (all categories), Nexus multiplayer missions, free items from other players

What to Do in Anomaly

  1. Master fleet management. You command a freighter (capital ship) and up to 30 frigates that you send on automated expeditions. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Scatter Blaster. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. The Medium Refiner and Large Refiner can combine materials into more valuable ones. Chlorine + Oxygen creates more Chlorine (infinite money loop). Platinum refines to Nanites. Learning refiner recipes is essential.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in sentinel combat for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • fleet management mastered
  • Scatter Blaster acquired or in progress
  • Anomaly fully cleared
  • Ready for Atlas Station

Phase 4: Late Game — Atlas Station

Story-critical locations from the Atlas Path questline. Each Atlas Station requires an Atlas Seed crafted from rare materials. Visiting all Atlas Stations reveals the Atlas' purpose and grants the ability to see black holes on the galaxy map. The story here ties into the simulation theme.

Level/Difficulty: Mid-game storyline Key Rewards: Atlas Seeds, Star Seed blueprint (health + shield boost), black hole vision, lore revelations

What to Do in Atlas Station

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Explorer or Fighter with optimized gear.
  2. Scatter Blaster should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. S-class ships can be found as crashed ships on planets using Emergency Cartographic Data from the Cartographer. The ship will need repairs but saves millions of units. Coordinate exchange websites share locations of specific ships.
  4. portal travel optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Galactic Center.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Scatter Blaster upgraded to max
  • Atlas Station fully cleared
  • Ready for Galactic Center

Phase 5: Endgame — Galactic Center

The objective of the main quest — reaching the center of the galaxy. Arriving and entering the center triggers a galaxy reset, sending you to a new galaxy with your ship and multitool damaged. There are 255 galaxies total, each with different planet generation biases. Eissentam (galaxy 10) is popular for lush planets.

Level/Difficulty: Endgame Key Rewards: Galaxy transition, access to new galaxy types (lush, harsh, empty, normal), achievement/trophy

What to Do in Galactic Center

  1. Galactic Center tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Portal glyph addresses shared on Reddit and NMS coordinate exchange let you teleport to specific planets with S-class multitools, exotic ships, and resource-rich worlds. Learn all 16 glyphs through the Artemis questline.
  3. The endgame loop: run Galactic Center, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Fleet Commander for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where portal travel mastery separates good players from great ones.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Galactic Center fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Selling everything at the first space station without checking prices — different economies pay different amounts. Use the Economy Scanner to find wealthy systems that pay top prices.
  • Not following the main quest lines (Artemis Path, Atlas Path) — they unlock critical blueprints, portal glyphs, and story content that you can't get any other way.
  • Installing technology modules randomly instead of in adjacent slots — adjacency bonuses provide 10-20% extra stats that add up massively across all systems.
  • Warping into the Galactic Center without being prepared — the transition damages all installed technology, so move important modules to the technology tab (which doesn't get damaged) first.
  • Ignoring the Anomaly early game — it has essential blueprint unlocks that dramatically improve your capabilities. Visit it as soon as it becomes available after your first warp.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Install three S-class Scanner modules in your multitool — each one multiplies scan rewards. With three good ones, a single rare fauna scan can pay 400,000 units, making exploration the most profitable activity.
  2. Technology modules installed in adjacent slots (touching each other) get a synergy bonus shown by colored borders. Always arrange your three S-class modules in a connected group for maximum stat boost.
  3. The Medium Refiner and Large Refiner can combine materials into more valuable ones. Chlorine + Oxygen creates more Chlorine (infinite money loop). Platinum refines to Nanites. Learning refiner recipes is essential.
  4. S-class ships can be found as crashed ships on planets using Emergency Cartographic Data from the Cartographer. The ship will need repairs but saves millions of units. Coordinate exchange websites share locations of specific ships.
  5. Portal glyph addresses shared on Reddit and NMS coordinate exchange let you teleport to specific planets with S-class multitools, exotic ships, and resource-rich worlds. Learn all 16 glyphs through the Artemis questline.
