Northgard is a Viking real time strategy game from Shiro Games, first released on 7 March 2018 and now sold on Steam as Northgard: Definitive Edition. You settle a newly discovered continent one territory at a time, assigning villagers to jobs, feeding them through winters that raise food and wood consumption, and choosing which of the several victory paths to chase. Clans are the real depth here: the base roster of Stag, Wolf, Goat, Raven and Bear plays very differently, and the clan list has grown past fifteen with Kraken, Ox, Lynx, Squirrel, Rat and more. A match usually runs 40 to 90 minutes and is decided long before the fighting starts.
Boss fights are where Northgard: Definitive Edition tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

Your Town Hall territory Bosses
Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Year 1, from the first minute Recommended build: Clan of the Wolf (Fenrir) with Shield Bearer
Strategy
The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. The map is divided into fixed territories, and taking one costs Food or Krowns and often means clearing wolves, draugr or a kobold camp first. This is your primary tool here.
Key tips:
- Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
- Use Territory colonisation with Food and Krowns to create safe windows.
- Shield Bearer is enough to handle everything here.
Fertile Land Bosses
Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Year 1 to Year 2 Recommended build: Clan of the Wolf (Fenrir) with Shield Bearer
Strategy
Early game bosses test your understanding of Winter and the seasonal clock. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.
Key tips:
- Winter and the seasonal clock is critical for these fights.
- Farm Shield Bearer upgrades if you're struggling.
- Consider switching to Clan of the Wolf (Fenrir) if your current setup isn't working.
Iron Deposit Bosses
Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Year 2 onward Recommended build: Clan of the Stag (Eikthyrnir) with Warrior
Strategy
Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.
Key tips:
- You need both Territory colonisation with Food and Krowns and Villager job assignment mastery.
- Warrior makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
- See our combat guide for advanced techniques.
Yggdrasil Bosses
Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Mid to late game, Year 4 onward Recommended build: Clan of the Stag (Eikthyrnir) with Warrior
Strategy
Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.
Key tips:
- Make sure your build is fully optimized.
- Warrior at max upgrade is recommended.
- Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.
Odin's Sword Bosses
Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Mid to late game, Year 4 onward Recommended build: Clan of the Stag (Eikthyrnir) with Warrior
Strategy
Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.
Key tips:
- Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
- Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
- These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.
General Boss Tips
- Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
- Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
- Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded Warrior trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
- Use Territory colonisation with Food and Krowns: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
- Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
