Northgard is a Viking real time strategy game from Shiro Games, first released on 7 March 2018 and now sold on Steam as Northgard: Definitive Edition. You settle a newly discovered continent one territory at a time, assigning villagers to jobs, feeding them through winters that raise food and wood consumption, and choosing which of the several victory paths to chase. Clans are the real depth here: the base roster of Stag, Wolf, Goat, Raven and Bear plays very differently, and the clan list has grown past fifteen with Kraken, Ox, Lynx, Squirrel, Rat and more. A match usually runs 40 to 90 minutes and is decided long before the fighting starts.
Northgard: Definitive Edition features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Your Town Hall territory | Year 1, from the first minute | Villager production, resource storage, the starting building slots | Clan of the Wolf (Fenrir) |
| 2 | Fertile Land | Year 1 to Year 2 | Farm output, food security through winter, contested early expansion | Clan of the Wolf (Fenrir) |
| 3 | Iron Deposit | Year 2 onward | Iron for the Warchief at 5 per hire, Forge upgrades, military scaling | Clan of the Stag (Eikthyrnir) |
| 4 | Yggdrasil | Mid to late game, Year 4 onward | Instant victory once the colonisation completes | Clan of the Stag (Eikthyrnir) |
| 5 | Odin's Sword | Mid to late game, Year 4 onward | Instant victory once all three sword parts are forged | Clan of the Stag (Eikthyrnir) |
Your Town Hall territory: Starting Area
The zone you start in, holding the Town Hall that produces villagers and stores resources. Losing it is a Domination loss, so it should be the last territory you leave undefended, and its building slots are the ones you plan around first.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Year 1, from the first minute |
| Key Rewards | Villager production, resource storage, the starting building slots |
| Recommended Build | Clan of the Wolf (Fenrir) |
| Key Equipment | Shield Bearer |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Territory colonisation with Food and Krowns. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Fertile Land.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Fertile Land: Early Game
Territories flagged as fertile are the only ones where Farms produce well, which makes them the food backbone of any long game. Clans without a way around this fight over them, which is why the Goat clan's Sheepfold bonus is as strong as it is.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Year 1 to Year 2 |
| Key Rewards | Farm output, food security through winter, contested early expansion |
| Recommended Build | Clan of the Wolf (Fenrir) |
| Key Equipment | Shield Bearer |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Winter and the seasonal clock. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Shield Bearer if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Iron Deposit.
Iron Deposit: Mid Game
Iron gates your Warchief, your Forge upgrades and much of your late military, and it comes only from deposits held in specific zones. A player who takes no iron territory will be capped militarily no matter how many Krowns they have.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Year 2 onward |
| Key Rewards | Iron for the Warchief at 5 per hire, Forge upgrades, military scaling |
| Recommended Build | Clan of the Stag (Eikthyrnir) |
| Key Equipment | Shield Bearer |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Warrior becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Villager job assignment for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Yggdrasil: Late Game
One of the map special victory zones, guarded by four Fallen Valkyries that must be defeated before you can begin. Colonising it takes six in-game months and 1500 Food across all difficulties, which is an enormous commitment that opponents can see coming.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid to late game, Year 4 onward |
| Key Rewards | Instant victory once the colonisation completes |
| Recommended Build | Clan of the Stag (Eikthyrnir) |
| Key Equipment | Warrior |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Warrior should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Five separate victory paths mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Odin's Sword.
Odin's Sword: Endgame
Another map special zone, where you must take control of the area and then reforge three parts of the sword using a Smith, each part costing 15 Iron. It is the fastest special condition for a clan already sitting on iron income.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Mid to late game, Year 4 onward |
| Key Rewards | Instant victory once all three sword parts are forged |
| Recommended Build | Clan of the Stag (Eikthyrnir) |
| Key Equipment | Warrior |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Clan of the Bear (Bjarki) for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Your Town Hall territory → Fertile Land → Iron Deposit → Yggdrasil → Odin's Sword. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
