Old School RuneScape is the 2013 fork of a 2007 backup of RuneScape, and it is not a mode inside RuneScape 3. Separate servers, separate accounts, separate membership, separate high scores. Steam app 1343370 is Jagex's official client for it rather than a distinct game, and the client is free while membership is not. Jagex polls new content to paying members and needs 70 percent yes to pass, a bar lowered from 75 percent at the end of 2022, which is why the game still plays like 2007 with two decades of member approved additions layered on.
Combat in Old School RuneScape rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Twenty four skills, every one capped at 99
There is no level 120 and no Invention here. Sailing became the twenty fourth skill on 19 November 2025 and stops at 99 like the rest, which puts the members maximum total level at 2,376.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Content polls needing 70 percent yes
Members vote on proposed content and a proposal needs 70 percent approval to enter the game. That threshold dropped from 75 percent in late 2022 because fewer than six percent of members were voting, which meant a tiny minority could block almost anything.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Tick based combat on a 0.6 second tick
The game runs on a fixed 0.6 second tick, and everything from attack speed to prayer switching resolves on it. Advanced play is mostly about fitting more actions into the same ticks rather than about reaction speed.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Grand Exchange trading and bonds
The Grand Exchange is the central market for nearly every tradeable item. Bonds are the only Jagex sold item that enters that economy: you buy one for real money and sell it for coins, or buy one with coins for membership. There are no loot boxes, no purchased experience and no gear store.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Account modes including Ironman and Group Ironman
Standard accounts trade freely. Ironman accounts cannot trade or take other players' drops. Group Ironman, released on 6 October 2021, lets two to five players share a restricted economy among themselves while staying cut off from everyone else.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Twenty four skills, every one capped at 99 + Content polls needing 70 percent yes
There is no level 120 and no Invention here. When combined with Content polls needing 70 percent yes, members vote on proposed content and a proposal needs 70 percent approval to enter the game. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Tick based combat on a 0.6 second tick + Grand Exchange trading and bonds
The game runs on a fixed 0. Paired with Grand Exchange trading and bonds, the grand exchange is the central market for nearly every tradeable item. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Account modes including Ironman and Group Ironman as a Multiplier
Standard accounts trade freely. Ironman accounts cannot trade or take other players' drops. Group Ironman, released on 6 October 2021, lets two to five players share a restricted economy among themselves while staying cut off from everyone else. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Account modes including Ironman and Group Ironman optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit Twenty four skills, every one capped at 99 for maximum damage windows
- Chain Content polls needing 70 percent yes and Tick based combat on a 0.6 second tick for combo damage
- Use Grand Exchange trading and bonds to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Do not follow RuneScape 3 guides. Old School has no Evolution of Combat, no Invention, no Necromancy and no level 120 skills. RS3 gear names, ability bars and training methods do not exist here, and applying them will waste days.
- Position using Twenty four skills, every one capped at 99 to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Content polls needing 70 percent yes: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Lumbridge but will get you killed in The Wilderness.
