Steam app 1056640 now carries the title Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. Sega put the original PSO2 on Steam on 5 August 2020 and launched New Genesis inside the same client on 9 June 2021, so one install gives you both the older ship blocks and the open field planet Halpha. New Genesis is where the population actually plays, across four regions named Aelio, Retem, Kvaris and Stia, all traversed on foot with Photon Dash and Photon Glide rather than through loading screens. Everything below describes New Genesis unless it says otherwise.

This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.

Core Mechanics

Main class and subclass pairing

You pick a main class and a subclass, and the subclass contributes a reduced share of its stats plus most of its passive skill tree. New Genesis offers Hunter, Fighter, Ranger, Gunner, Force, Techter, Braver, Bouncer, Waker and Slayer, and you can level all of them on one character. Swapping classes costs nothing but a trip to the class counter, so there is no reason to reroll.

Battle Power gating

Battle Power is a single number combining your level, weapon, armour units and augments, and quests state a recommended figure before you queue. Falling short does not lock you out of everything, but it does lock the harder content, so BP is the number the game expects you to chase rather than gear score by name. Augments and weapon enhancement move it more than raw level does past the early game.

Multi-Weapon crafting

Multi-Weapon merges two weapons of different categories into one item, letting a single equipped weapon use both movesets. It is the reason a Braver can carry Katana and Bullet Bow behaviour in one slot instead of swapping, and it is a standard part of any endgame loadout. The merge consumes the second weapon, so plan it around gear you actually intend to keep.

Photon Dash and Photon Glide traversal

Halpha is one continuous field and you cross it by sprinting with Photon Dash, climbing walls and gliding, with no stamina drain to manage. This is the clearest break from the original PSO2, which sent you into instanced areas from a ship lobby. Exploration rewards such as region mags and cocoons are scattered specifically to make you use the movement.

Urgent Quests and Dark Falz fights

Urgent Quests appear on a schedule and pull the server population into one fight at once. Major Target Suppression Quests run with four players, a fifteen minute limit and five incapacitations before failure, against a Dark Falz class enemy. The rank two version of a Dark Falz fight is level 60 and four players only, and it is a real step up rather than a numbers bump.

Equipment Guide

EquipmentWhy It MattersBest For
SwordThe Hunter's heavy melee option, slow but with strong counter windows and enough reach to hit large targets safely.Hunters holding aggro on Urgent Quest bosses and new players learning attack timings.
Twin DaggersA Fighter weapon built around fast strikes and aerial mobility, trading defensive value for uptime.Fighters punishing downed phases and staying airborne over ground attacks.
Assault RifleThe Ranger's rapid fire weapon, used for sustained mid-range damage and for hitting weak points that melee classes cannot reach.Rangers picking apart weak points and playing safely in crowded fights.
RodThe Force casting weapon and the primary way to use techniques rather than Photon Arts.Force players clearing groups in the open field and covering wide boss arenas.
KatanaThe Braver melee weapon, fast and counter heavy, and the usual base for a Multi-Weapon merge with a Bullet Bow.Bravers who want melee and ranged coverage from a single equipped weapon.

Sword: The Hunter's heavy melee option, slow but with strong counter windows and enough reach to hit large targets safely. It pairs naturally with Hunter's damage resistance skills, which is what lets you stand still and counter.

Twin Daggers: A Fighter weapon built around fast strikes and aerial mobility, trading defensive value for uptime. It rewards players who already know when a boss is about to move.

Assault Rifle: The Ranger's rapid fire weapon, used for sustained mid-range damage and for hitting weak points that melee classes cannot reach. It is the most consistent damage profile in the game because it never asks you to close distance.

Rod: The Force casting weapon and the primary way to use techniques rather than Photon Arts. Element choice matters more than raw weapon power against enemies with a clear weakness.

Katana: The Braver melee weapon, fast and counter heavy, and the usual base for a Multi-Weapon merge with a Bullet Bow. That merge is why Braver rarely needs a second weapon slot in a fight.

Location Progression

LocationLevel RangeKey Rewards
Central CityAny level, safe hubClass changes, shops, quest counters, player shops
AelioStarting region, first story chapterRegion mags, cocoons, towers, starter gear
RetemAfter Aelio chapter 1Higher tier gear, Retem region exploration rewards
KvarisAfter the To Kvaris Region chapterKvaris tier weapons and units, exploration collectibles
StiaLate region, fourth on HalphaEndgame gear tiers, high level field bosses

Central City: The town area for the Aelio region and the main social hub, where you change class, take quests and access shops. Everything administrative happens here, so it is the place you return to between field trips.

Aelio: The first of the four sectors of Halpha and where every character starts, with the gentlest enemies and the tutorial story chapter. Its cocoons and towers are the first permanent stat boosts you will collect.

Retem: The desert region, unlocked after clearing chapter one of the Aelio story. Enemy density and level both rise, and it is the first place a badly matched Battle Power becomes obvious.

Kvaris: The snow region, unlocked by clearing the To Kvaris Region chapter. It introduced its own story arc and a step up in gear tier when it launched.

Stia: The fourth region on Halpha and the late destination in the progression chain from Aelio through Retem and Kvaris. Expect the highest Battle Power requirements on the planet here.

Tips That Actually Matter

  1. Level more than one class on the same character, because class changes are free at the counter and there is no benefit to keeping a separate alt.
  2. Track Battle Power rather than character level, since quests state a recommended BP and augments plus weapon enhancement move it far more than levelling does.
  3. Clear cocoons and towers in each region as you pass them, because they hand out permanent stat increases that carry across every class you play.
  4. Build a Multi-Weapon before you start endgame content, especially on Braver, where merging Katana and Bullet Bow removes the need to swap weapons mid fight.
  5. Major Target Suppression Quests run four players, fifteen minutes and five incapacitations, so a party that keeps dying will fail on the incapacitation limit before the timer.
  6. The rank two Dark Falz fight is level 60 and four players only, so treat it as a separate goal rather than an incremental step up from rank one.
  7. Photon Dash and Photon Glide have no stamina cost, so travel on foot rather than waiting on fast travel and pick up exploration rewards along the way.
  8. Take Hunter as a subclass if you keep dying on Fighter or Force, since the subclass passives carry most of its damage resistance across.
  9. Match your Force element to the enemy weakness rather than defaulting to one technique, because element mismatch costs more damage than any gear upgrade will recover.
  10. The same client still contains the original PSO2 blocks, so if you want the older instanced content it is already installed rather than a separate purchase.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Creating a new character for each class, when class changes are free at the counter and progress on one character is shared.
  • Queueing for content while well below the recommended Battle Power, then blaming the party for a failure the gear check predicted.
  • Skipping cocoons and towers during early exploration, which permanently leaves stat points on the table for every class you later play.
  • Merging a Multi-Weapon out of gear you plan to replace, since the merge consumes the second weapon.
  • Assuming New Genesis and the original PSO2 are separate purchases, when app 1056640 carries both inside one client.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this game PSO2 or New Genesis?

Steam app 1056640 is titled Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis, and the client contains both. The original PSO2 arrived on Steam on 5 August 2020 and New Genesis launched inside the same client on 9 June 2021, where nearly all current players are.

Which class should a new player pick?

Hunter, because its skill tree is full of damage resistance and it uses Sword, Wired Lance and Partizan at a comfortable range. Braver is the other common recommendation since Katana and Bullet Bow cover both melee and ranged from one class.

What is Battle Power?

A single number combining your level, weapon, armour units and augments. Quests list a recommended figure, and past the early game your augments and weapon enhancement move it far more than levelling up does.

How many regions are there?

Four on the planet Halpha: Aelio, Retem, Kvaris and Stia. Central City is the town area for Aelio, and each new region unlocks by clearing the previous region's story chapter.

What is a Multi-Weapon?

A merge of two weapons from different categories into one equipped item that can use both movesets. Braver players commonly merge a Katana with a Bullet Bow so they never have to swap slots mid fight, and the merge consumes the second weapon permanently.
