Steam app 1056640 now carries the title Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. Sega put the original PSO2 on Steam on 5 August 2020 and launched New Genesis inside the same client on 9 June 2021, so one install gives you both the older ship blocks and the open field planet Halpha. New Genesis is where the population actually plays, across four regions named Aelio, Retem, Kvaris and Stia, all traversed on foot with Photon Dash and Photon Glide rather than through loading screens. Everything below describes New Genesis unless it says otherwise.
Phantasy Star Online 2 features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Central City | Any level, safe hub | Class changes, shops, quest counters, player shops | Fighter |
| 2 | Aelio | Starting region, first story chapter | Region mags, cocoons, towers, starter gear | Fighter |
| 3 | Retem | After Aelio chapter 1 | Higher tier gear, Retem region exploration rewards | Hunter |
| 4 | Kvaris | After the To Kvaris Region chapter | Kvaris tier weapons and units, exploration collectibles | Hunter |
| 5 | Stia | Late region, fourth on Halpha | Endgame gear tiers, high level field bosses | Hunter |
Central City: Starting Area
The town area for the Aelio region and the main social hub, where you change class, take quests and access shops. Everything administrative happens here, so it is the place you return to between field trips.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Any level, safe hub |
| Key Rewards | Class changes, shops, quest counters, player shops |
| Recommended Build | Fighter |
| Key Equipment | Twin Daggers |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of Main class and subclass pairing. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to Aelio.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
Aelio: Early Game
The first of the four sectors of Halpha and where every character starts, with the gentlest enemies and the tutorial story chapter. Its cocoons and towers are the first permanent stat boosts you will collect.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Starting region, first story chapter |
| Key Rewards | Region mags, cocoons, towers, starter gear |
| Recommended Build | Fighter |
| Key Equipment | Twin Daggers |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Battle Power gating. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Twin Daggers if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in Retem.
Retem: Mid Game
The desert region, unlocked after clearing chapter one of the Aelio story. Enemy density and level both rise, and it is the first place a badly matched Battle Power becomes obvious.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | After Aelio chapter 1 |
| Key Rewards | Higher tier gear, Retem region exploration rewards |
| Recommended Build | Hunter |
| Key Equipment | Twin Daggers |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Sword becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Multi-Weapon crafting for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
Kvaris: Late Game
The snow region, unlocked by clearing the To Kvaris Region chapter. It introduced its own story arc and a step up in gear tier when it launched.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | After the To Kvaris Region chapter |
| Key Rewards | Kvaris tier weapons and units, exploration collectibles |
| Recommended Build | Hunter |
| Key Equipment | Sword |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Sword should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Urgent Quests and Dark Falz fights mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into Stia.
Stia: Endgame
The fourth region on Halpha and the late destination in the progression chain from Aelio through Retem and Kvaris. Expect the highest Battle Power requirements on the planet here.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Late region, fourth on Halpha |
| Key Rewards | Endgame gear tiers, high level field bosses |
| Recommended Build | Hunter |
| Key Equipment | Sword |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Braver for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: Central City → Aelio → Retem → Kvaris → Stia. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
