Steam app 1056640 now carries the title Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. Sega put the original PSO2 on Steam on 5 August 2020 and launched New Genesis inside the same client on 9 June 2021, so one install gives you both the older ship blocks and the open field planet Halpha. New Genesis is where the population actually plays, across four regions named Aelio, Retem, Kvaris and Stia, all traversed on foot with Photon Dash and Photon Glide rather than through loading screens. Everything below describes New Genesis unless it says otherwise.
Combat in Phantasy Star Online 2 rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Main class and subclass pairing
You pick a main class and a subclass, and the subclass contributes a reduced share of its stats plus most of its passive skill tree. New Genesis offers Hunter, Fighter, Ranger, Gunner, Force, Techter, Braver, Bouncer, Waker and Slayer, and you can level all of them on one character. Swapping classes costs nothing but a trip to the class counter, so there is no reason to reroll.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Battle Power gating
Battle Power is a single number combining your level, weapon, armour units and augments, and quests state a recommended figure before you queue. Falling short does not lock you out of everything, but it does lock the harder content, so BP is the number the game expects you to chase rather than gear score by name. Augments and weapon enhancement move it more than raw level does past the early game.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Multi-Weapon crafting
Multi-Weapon merges two weapons of different categories into one item, letting a single equipped weapon use both movesets. It is the reason a Braver can carry Katana and Bullet Bow behaviour in one slot instead of swapping, and it is a standard part of any endgame loadout. The merge consumes the second weapon, so plan it around gear you actually intend to keep.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Photon Dash and Photon Glide traversal
Halpha is one continuous field and you cross it by sprinting with Photon Dash, climbing walls and gliding, with no stamina drain to manage. This is the clearest break from the original PSO2, which sent you into instanced areas from a ship lobby. Exploration rewards such as region mags and cocoons are scattered specifically to make you use the movement.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Urgent Quests and Dark Falz fights
Urgent Quests appear on a schedule and pull the server population into one fight at once. Major Target Suppression Quests run with four players, a fifteen minute limit and five incapacitations before failure, against a Dark Falz class enemy. The rank two version of a Dark Falz fight is level 60 and four players only, and it is a real step up rather than a numbers bump.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Main class and subclass pairing + Battle Power gating
You pick a main class and a subclass, and the subclass contributes a reduced share of its stats plus most of its passive skill tree. When combined with Battle Power gating, battle power is a single number combining your level, weapon, armour units and augments, and quests state a recommended figure before you queue. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Multi-Weapon crafting + Photon Dash and Photon Glide traversal
Multi-Weapon merges two weapons of different categories into one item, letting a single equipped weapon use both movesets. Paired with Photon Dash and Photon Glide traversal, halpha is one continuous field and you cross it by sprinting with photon dash, climbing walls and gliding, with no stamina drain to manage. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Urgent Quests and Dark Falz fights as a Multiplier
Urgent Quests appear on a schedule and pull the server population into one fight at once. Major Target Suppression Quests run with four players, a fifteen minute limit and five incapacitations before failure, against a Dark Falz class enemy. The rank two version of a Dark Falz fight is level 60 and four players only, and it is a real step up rather than a numbers bump. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Urgent Quests and Dark Falz fights optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit Main class and subclass pairing for maximum damage windows
- Chain Battle Power gating and Multi-Weapon crafting for combo damage
- Use Photon Dash and Photon Glide traversal to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Level more than one class on the same character, because class changes are free at the counter and there is no benefit to keeping a separate alt.
- Position using Main class and subclass pairing to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Battle Power gating: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in Central City but will get you killed in Stia.
