PopCap released Plants vs. Zombies on 5 May 2009, and the Game of the Year Edition is the build Steam still sells today. Adventure Mode runs 50 levels across five settings, supported by 49 plants, 26 zombie types and 21 Steam achievements. Dr. Zomboss closes the campaign at level 5 to 10 in his own machine.
Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.
Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Tier | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peashooter | S | Early day levels and as the base for Repeater and Gatling Pea upgrades | The 100 sun starter that fires one pea straight down its own lane. |
| Sunflower | A | Columns one and two on every day and pool level | Costs 50 sun and produces 25 sun at a time, so it repays itself quickly and then funds everything else. |
| Wall-nut | A | Holding a lane in front of shooters, especially against Football Zombies | Fifty sun of pure health that soaks hits while your shooters work. |
| Cherry Bomb | B | Packed groups and emergencies where a lane is about to break | A 150 sun instant kill covering a 3 by 3 area, with one of the slowest recharge timers in the game. |
| Squash | B | Single tough zombies on a budget, in every area including the roof | Fifty sun for a single target instant kill that jumps on whatever gets closest. |
S-Tier: Peashooter
The 100 sun starter that fires one pea straight down its own lane. It is the damage benchmark the Almanac measures every zombie against, with a Conehead taking about 28 peas and a Buckethead about 65.

Equipment Progression Path
The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear Day
- Sunflower → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Wall-nut → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Peashooter → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Equipment Tips
- Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Plant the first two columns entirely with Sunflowers before you plant a single shooter. Sun is the only currency in the game, and a lawn that reaches roughly eight producers by wave three can afford Melon-pults later while a rushed defence never can.
- Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
