Red Dead Online launched as a standalone purchase on 1 December 2020 at 4.99 dollars, split off from Red Dead Redemption 2 so players could buy the multiplayer without the story mode, and settled at 19.99 dollars after the introductory window closed on 15 February 2021. It puts up to 32 players in the same 1898 map across Ambarino, New Hanover, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth and New Austin, with five specialist Roles carrying most of the progression. Rockstar announced on 7 July 2022 that major themed content updates had ended so staff could move to the next Grand Theft Auto, so treat this as a finished game with seasonal events rather than an active live service.
Boss fights are where Red Dead Online tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

| West Elizabeth | Hard | Bounty Hunter | Lancaster Repeater |
| New Austin | Very Hard | Bounty Hunter | Lancaster Repeater |

New Hanover Bosses
Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Ranks 1 to 20 Recommended build: Trader with Bolt Action Rifle
Strategy
The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner and Naturalist each run a separate 20-rank progression track with their own unlocks. This is your primary tool here.
Key tips:
- Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
- Use Five specialist Roles to create safe windows.
- Bolt Action Rifle is enough to handle everything here.
Lemoyne Bosses
Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Ranks 10 and up Recommended build: Trader with Bolt Action Rifle
Strategy
Early game bosses test your understanding of Gold Bars as the unlock currency. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.
Key tips:
- Gold Bars as the unlock currency is critical for these fights.
- Farm Bolt Action Rifle upgrades if you're struggling.
- Consider switching to Trader if your current setup isn't working.
West Elizabeth Bosses
Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Ranks 15 and up Recommended build: Bounty Hunter with Lancaster Repeater
Strategy
Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.
Key tips:
- You need both Five specialist Roles and Ability Cards and Dead Eye mastery.
- Lancaster Repeater makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
- See our combat guide for advanced techniques.
New Austin Bosses
Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Ranks 25 and up Recommended build: Bounty Hunter with Lancaster Repeater
Strategy
Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.
Key tips:
- Make sure your build is fully optimized.
- Lancaster Repeater at max upgrade is recommended.
- Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.
Ambarino Bosses
Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Ranks 20 and up Recommended build: Bounty Hunter with Lancaster Repeater
Strategy
Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.
Key tips:
- Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
- Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
- These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.
General Boss Tips
- Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
- Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
- Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded Lancaster Repeater trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
- Use Five specialist Roles: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
- Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
