Red Dead Online launched as a standalone purchase on 1 December 2020 at 4.99 dollars, split off from Red Dead Redemption 2 so players could buy the multiplayer without the story mode, and settled at 19.99 dollars after the introductory window closed on 15 February 2021. It puts up to 32 players in the same 1898 map across Ambarino, New Hanover, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth and New Austin, with five specialist Roles carrying most of the progression. Rockstar announced on 7 July 2022 that major themed content updates had ended so staff could move to the next Grand Theft Auto, so treat this as a finished game with seasonal events rather than an active live service.

These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.

Essential Tips

1. Make Collector your first Role

Make Collector your first Role. The Collector's Bag costs 15 Gold Bars, the collectibles it unlocks cost nothing to gather, and complete sets sold to Madam Nazar pay several hundred dollars each, which funds every other Role without needing more gold.

2. Daily challenges are the only reliable gold income

Daily challenges are the only reliable gold income. Each completed challenge pays a fraction of a Gold Bar and a streak multiplier builds over consecutive days, so logging in for even a few minutes to clear easy challenges is worth more than an hour of missions.

3. Move Cripps and the camp before a delivery run

Move Cripps and the camp before a delivery run. Distant deliveries pay roughly double local ones but the wagon travels the whole way in the open, so shifting camp toward the destination first cuts the exposure window substantially.

4. Use the Varmint Rifle on anything smaller than a deer

Use the Varmint Rifle on anything smaller than a deer. Rabbits, squirrels and birds only produce three-star pelts when killed cleanly with a small calibre, and a repeater round destroys the carcass and the payout with it.

5. Switch to Defensive mode in the Free Roam settings if you are hauling goods

Switch to Defensive mode in the Free Roam settings if you are hauling goods. It reduces the damage you take from other players and blocks most of the harassment that would otherwise cost you a full delivery wagon.

6. Take bounty targets alive whenever the contract allows it

Take bounty targets alive whenever the contract allows it. Live capture pays more than a kill, and on Legendary Bounties the payout scales with how many of the target's gang you leave standing, which rewards a quiet approach over a firefight.

7. Pick your Dead Eye card early and stick with it, because upgrading a card through its three tiers costs both cash and gold

Pick your Dead Eye card early and stick with it, because upgrading a card through its three tiers costs both cash and gold. Paint It Black suits players who want reliable headshots, Slippery Bastard suits players who fight other people constantly.

8. Moonshiner needs Trader rank 5 before you can buy the Shack, so do not spend 25 Gold Bars expecting to start it cold

Moonshiner needs Trader rank 5 before you can buy the Shack, so do not spend 25 Gold Bars expecting to start it cold. Run the Butcher's Table first, and by the time Trader hits rank 5 you will have most of the cash the shack upgrades need.

9. For the Naturalist, sedating an animal and taking a sample for Harriet Davenport and skinning it for Gus Macmillan are mutually exclusive on the same animal

For the Naturalist, sedating an animal and taking a sample for Harriet Davenport and skinning it for Gus Macmillan are mutually exclusive on the same animal. Decide before you fire, because Legendary Animals only respawn on a cooldown.

10. Do not expect new content

Do not expect new content. Rockstar's 7 July 2022 statement ended major themed updates in favour of seasonal events and occasional Telegram Missions, so plan around finishing the five Role tracks rather than waiting for an expansion.

Advanced Strategies

Build Optimization

The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.

For Bounty Hunter (A-Tier):

  • Focus on Five specialist Roles combinations for maximum output.
  • Core gear: Lancaster Repeater
  • Stat priority: Offensive stats first

For Trader (A-Tier):

  • Versatile approach that handles any situation.
  • Core gear: Bolt Action Rifle
  • Stat priority: Balanced stats

Mechanic Interactions

Understanding how Red Dead Online's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.

Five specialist Roles + Gold Bars as the unlock currency: Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner and Naturalist each run a separate 20-rank progression track with their own unlocks. Combined with Gold Bars as the unlock currency, roles are bought with gold bars rather than cash.

Ability Cards and Dead Eye + Posses and Free Roam Events: You equip one Dead Eye card and up to three passive cards, each upgradeable through three tiers with cash and gold. When paired with Posses and Free Roam Events, a temporary posse holds up to seven players and a persistent posse can be bought outright.

Camp and Moonshine Shack property scaling: Cripps and your camp form the Trader's base of operations and can be moved between regions for a small fee, which decides how far your delivery missions run. The Moonshine Shack is a separate property with its own bar, cellar and upgrade tree, and it unlocks only after you have reached Trader rank 5.

Equipment Efficiency

EquipmentBest Use CaseWhy
Lancaster RepeaterFree Roam fights, Showdown Series and clearing bounty escortsThe default competitive repeater, with a rate of fire and reload that beat the Litchfield while still killing in two body shots at typical Free Roam ranges.
Bolt Action RifleHunting deer, elk and bison for Cripps and camp materialsA cheap, hard-hitting rifle that drops most large game in one shot to the vitals and is the standard Trader hunting weapon.
Springfield RifleBear, bison and long-range single-shot huntingHigher damage and longer range than the Bolt Action with an even slower fire rate, which makes it the pick for large or dangerous game where a clean single shot matters more than a second attempt.
Varmint RiflePerfect small game pelts and Naturalist sedation workA small-calibre rifle that produces perfect pelts on rabbits, squirrels, birds and other small game where anything heavier ruins the carcass.
Schofield RevolverClose-range backup and early-game players short of cashA fast-reloading sidearm with a solid damage to fire rate balance, and the standard backup once a repeater runs dry mid fight.

Location Efficiency

New Hanover (Ranks 1 to 20): Valentine, Emerald Ranch, Annesburg and the Heartlands. This is the default starting region, with dense deer and pronghorn populations for Trader hunting and short travel times to most Free Roam Events.

Lemoyne (Ranks 10 and up): Saint Denis, Rhodes and the Bayou Nwa swamps. Saint Denis holds the largest shops on the map, and the bayou is prime Moonshiner and Collector territory as well as being the region most likely to get you jumped by other players.

West Elizabeth (Ranks 15 and up): Blackwater, Strawberry, Big Valley and Tall Trees. Big Valley is the standard Collector circuit because its spawn points cluster tightly, and Tall Trees holds cougars and bears for high-value pelts.

New Austin (Ranks 25 and up): Armadillo, Tumbleweed, Benedict Point and the desert around Rio Bravo. Sparse, hot and empty, which makes it the quietest place to run deliveries and the best region for Naturalist work on desert species.

Ambarino (Ranks 20 and up): The Grizzlies, Colter and Lake Isabella in the far north. Deep snow, bad visibility and the highest-value cold weather game, including moose and legendary bears, with almost no towns to resupply at.

Mistakes Even Veterans Make

  1. Spending the first 15 Gold Bars on the Naturalist or Moonshiner track. Both cost 25 Gold Bars, Moonshiner additionally requires Trader rank 5, and neither pays back as quickly as Collector or Trader.
  2. Hunting with a repeater or a shotgun and then wondering why pelts sell for so little. Pelt quality depends on the calibre and the shot placement, so Cripps gets far less material out of a mangled carcass.
  3. Running distant Trader deliveries solo in a full public lobby with the camp still parked on the other side of the map, which is the single most common way players lose a full wagon.
  4. Ignoring daily challenges. Gold Bars are the gate on every Role, and the daily streak multiplier is the difference between unlocking a Role in a week and unlocking it in a month.
  5. Buying Red Dead Online expecting the Red Dead Redemption 2 story campaign. The standalone product contains only the online mode, and the single-player story is a separate purchase.
