Red Dead Online launched as a standalone purchase on 1 December 2020 at 4.99 dollars, split off from Red Dead Redemption 2 so players could buy the multiplayer without the story mode, and settled at 19.99 dollars after the introductory window closed on 15 February 2021. It puts up to 32 players in the same 1898 map across Ambarino, New Hanover, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth and New Austin, with five specialist Roles carrying most of the progression. Rockstar announced on 7 July 2022 that major themed content updates had ended so staff could move to the next Grand Theft Auto, so treat this as a finished game with seasonal events rather than an active live service.
Combat in Red Dead Online rewards knowledge over reflexes. Understanding how each mechanic works (and how they interact) is what turns a struggling player into a dominant one. New here? Start with our beginner's guide for the basics.
Core Combat Mechanics
1. Five specialist Roles
Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner and Naturalist each run a separate 20-rank progression track with their own unlocks. Rank tags change every five ranks through Novice, Promising, Established and Distinguished, and the Bounty Hunter track extends to rank 30 with the Prestigious Licence.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of all combat. Everything else builds on this.
2. Gold Bars as the unlock currency
Roles are bought with Gold Bars rather than cash. The Bounty Hunter Licence, Collector's Bag and Trader's Butcher's Table cost 15 Gold Bars each, while the Moonshine Shack and the Naturalist Sample Kit cost 25 each. Gold is earned slowly from daily challenges, so decide your first Role deliberately.
Why it matters: The most underrated mechanic. Players who master this early have a massive advantage.
3. Ability Cards and Dead Eye
You equip one Dead Eye card and up to three passive cards, each upgradeable through three tiers with cash and gold. The Dead Eye card defines your combat identity: Paint It Black marks targets for automatic headshots, while Slippery Bastard makes enemy auto-aim slide off you entirely.
Why it matters: Unlocks a new layer of gameplay depth once understood.
4. Posses and Free Roam Events
A temporary posse holds up to seven players and a persistent posse can be bought outright. Free Roam Events fire on a timer across the whole lobby and include Master Archer, Wild Animal Kills, Fool's Gold, King of the Castle and Railroad Baron, and they pay well relative to the time they take.
Why it matters: The tactical edge that separates average players from advanced ones.
5. Camp and Moonshine Shack property
Cripps and your camp form the Trader's base of operations and can be moved between regions for a small fee, which decides how far your delivery missions run. The Moonshine Shack is a separate property with its own bar, cellar and upgrade tree, and it unlocks only after you have reached Trader rank 5.
Why it matters: The endgame optimization mechanic. Small improvements here compound into massive gains.
How These Mechanics Combine
Understanding how mechanics interact is where real optimization happens:
Five specialist Roles + Gold Bars as the unlock currency
Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner and Naturalist each run a separate 20-rank progression track with their own unlocks. When combined with Gold Bars as the unlock currency, roles are bought with gold bars rather than cash. This combination is the core of every effective build.
Ability Cards and Dead Eye + Posses and Free Roam Events
You equip one Dead Eye card and up to three passive cards, each upgradeable through three tiers with cash and gold. Paired with Posses and Free Roam Events, a temporary posse holds up to seven players and a persistent posse can be bought outright. This is why the tier list favors builds that leverage both.
Camp and Moonshine Shack property as a Multiplier
Cripps and your camp form the Trader's base of operations and can be moved between regions for a small fee, which decides how far your delivery missions run. The Moonshine Shack is a separate property with its own bar, cellar and upgrade tree, and it unlocks only after you have reached Trader rank 5. This system amplifies everything else. The better your Camp and Moonshine Shack property optimization, the more your other mechanics pay off.

Advanced Combat Techniques
Damage Optimization
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities
- Exploit Five specialist Roles for maximum damage windows
- Chain Gold Bars as the unlock currency and Ability Cards and Dead Eye for combo damage
- Use Posses and Free Roam Events to create openings
Survivability
- Learn enemy patterns before committing to attacks
- Make Collector your first Role. The Collector's Bag costs 15 Gold Bars, the collectibles it unlocks cost nothing to gather, and complete sets sold to Madam Nazar pay several hundred dollars each, which funds every other Role without needing more gold.
- Position using Five specialist Roles to control spacing
- Save defensive options for guaranteed survival, not comfort
Boss Combat
Bosses test your understanding of every mechanic. See our boss guide for fight-specific strategies.
- Phase awareness: Most bosses change behavior at health thresholds
- Patience over aggression: One extra hit per opening beats dying to greed
- Build preparation: Swap gear and equipment for specific fights when needed
Common Combat Mistakes
- Button mashing: Committed attacks have recovery frames. Mashing locks you into animations.
- Ignoring Gold Bars as the unlock currency: This mechanic exists for a reason. Players who use it take significantly less damage.
- Wrong equipment for the situation: Check our weapons guide for situational picks.
- Not learning from deaths: Every death teaches something. If you don't know why you died, you'll die the same way again.
- Overcommitting: Trading hits works in New Hanover but will get you killed in Ambarino.
