Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spear troops | Holding open ground against a cavalry heavy force | Produced at the smithy and the answer to cavalry. |
| Pike troops | Chokepoints and mountain passes where cavalry cannot reach them | Weaker attack, stronger defence, and able to hit multiple opponents at once. |
| Cavalry | Punishing pike stacks and running down retreating armies | Bred at the stable, stronger attack and thinner defence, and the fastest thing on the map. |
| Crossbow troops | Sitting behind pikes and shooting stacks that cannot close | Weak in attack and defence but able to strike two tiles away and hit multiple targets, and able to take down city defences with Incinerate. |
| Siege engines | Cracking walled cities that a field army cannot storm directly | Three distinct jobs. |

Equipment Analysis
Spear troops: Produced at the smithy and the answer to cavalry. Spear strategies can confuse a target with Rush, and the Power Up Kit strengthened the trap effect when spearman strategies destroy troops.
Pike troops: Weaker attack, stronger defence, and able to hit multiple opponents at once. Pikes beat spears and fold to cavalry, and their upgrade tree includes Arrow Shields for a thirty per cent chance to avoid arrows and Large Shields for a thirty per cent chance to avoid normal attacks.
Cavalry: Bred at the stable, stronger attack and thinner defence, and the fastest thing on the map. Cavalry strategies raise the chance of capturing an enemy general rather than simply routing him, which matters more than the damage.
Crossbow troops: Weak in attack and defence but able to strike two tiles away and hit multiple targets, and able to take down city defences with Incinerate. Crossbows are a support arm, not a line unit.
Siege engines: Three distinct jobs. Rams do heavy damage to a city's hit points but cannot attack units at all. Juggernauts set fires as well as dealing solid damage. Towers hit troops inside a city and can also engage units in the field.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI with Power Up Kit centers on One continuous map of China and Field facilities built onto terrain. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.
What's strong right now:
- Cao Cao with Spear troops is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- Pike, Spear and Cavalry counters builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
- Sun Quan remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.
What's underrated:
- Liu Bei is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Cavalry offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Yuan Shao builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
