Sea of Stars is a turn based RPG from Sabotage Studio, a prequel to their game The Messenger. It modernizes classic JRPG combat with timed hits and a lock system that lets you interrupt enemy attacks by hitting the right damage types.

This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Mountain Trail)

An early region that teaches climbing, timed hits and the lock system.

Level/Difficulty: Early game Key Rewards: Combat basics, first gear, early story

What to Do in Mountain Trail

  1. Learn Timed hit combat. Pressing the button at the right moment adds damage to attacks and reduces incoming hits, rewarding attention every turn. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
  2. Pick Zale solar warrior as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
  3. Time every attack and block, since timed hits add damage and timed defense cuts what you take.
  4. Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Zale's solar blade or whatever's available.
  5. Clear all main content before moving on.

Phase 1 Checklist

  • Understand Timed hit combat fundamentals
  • Zale solar warrior selected and functional
  • Mountain Trail main content cleared
  • Ready for Brisk town

Phase 2: Early Game (Brisk town)

Brisk town is the first real challenge beyond the basics.

Level/Difficulty: Early Key Rewards: Progression materials and gear upgrades

What to Do in Brisk town

  1. Work on Lock and break system. Enemies charging big attacks show lock icons, and dealing those damage types in time breaks the spell. This system becomes critical from here on.
  2. Farm for Zale's solar blade if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
  3. Read the lock icons on enemy charges and deal those exact damage types to break big attacks.
  4. Complete all objectives before pushing to Wraith Island.
  5. Consider whether Valere lunar warrior might suit your playstyle better than Zale solar warrior.

Phase 2 Checklist

  • Lock and break system integrated into gameplay
  • Zale's solar blade acquired
  • Brisk town fully cleared
  • Ready for Wraith Island

Phase 3: Mid Game (Wraith Island)

A haunted island with a major dungeon and a memorable mid game arc.

Level/Difficulty: Mid game Key Rewards: Key story beats, strong gear, boss fights

What to Do in Wraith Island

  1. Master Combo skill points. Acting builds combo points that fuel powerful two character combo attacks shared by the party. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
  2. Start working toward Valere's moon staff. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
  3. Cook meals before bosses, since food heals without spending the party's shared MP pool.
  4. This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
  5. Start investing in Day night cycle puzzles for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.

Phase 3 Checklist

  • Combo skill points mastered
  • Valere's moon staff acquired or in progress
  • Wraith Island fully cleared
  • Ready for Sleeper Island

Phase 4: Late Game (Sleeper Island)

A large region opening up after gaining the boat for wider exploration.

Level/Difficulty: Mid to late Key Rewards: New areas, sidequests, party growth

What to Do in Sleeper Island

  1. Finalize your build. You should be running Valere lunar warrior or Zale solar warrior with optimized gear.
  2. Valere's moon staff should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
  3. Manage MP carefully, because all characters draw from a shared pool that normal hits refill.
  4. No random encounters optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
  5. Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Cloud Kingdom.

Phase 4 Checklist

  • Build fully optimized
  • Valere's moon staff upgraded to max
  • Sleeper Island fully cleared
  • Ready for Cloud Kingdom

Phase 5: Endgame (Cloud Kingdom)

A late game sky region tied to the story's climb toward its finale.

Level/Difficulty: Late game Key Rewards: Endgame gear, late bosses, story climax

What to Do in Cloud Kingdom

  1. Cloud Kingdom tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
  2. Match Valere's moon and Zale's sun damage to the lock symbols to interrupt the worst spells.
  3. The endgame loop: run Cloud Kingdom, optimize gear, push harder content.
  4. Experiment with Resh'an the alchemist for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
  5. This is where No random encounters mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.

Phase 5 Checklist

  • Endgame content on farm
  • Best-in-slot gear acquired
  • Cloud Kingdom fully cleared
  • Ready for challenge content

Common Progression Mistakes

  • Ignoring timed hits and leaving large amounts of free damage and defense on the table.
  • Failing to read lock icons so enemy charged spells land at full power.
  • Spending the shared MP pool too fast and having nothing left for breaks and heals.
  • Skipping cooking and relying on MP heals that drain the pool during long fights.
  • Triggering avoidable map enemies and wearing the party down before a boss.

Key Tips for Smooth Progression

  1. Time every attack and block, since timed hits add damage and timed defense cuts what you take.
  2. Read the lock icons on enemy charges and deal those exact damage types to break big attacks.
  3. Cook meals before bosses, since food heals without spending the party's shared MP pool.
  4. Manage MP carefully, because all characters draw from a shared pool that normal hits refill.
  5. Match Valere's moon and Zale's sun damage to the lock symbols to interrupt the worst spells.
