SnowRunner is Saber Interactive's off road hauling sim, published by Focus Entertainment, released in April 2020 and reaching Steam on 18 May 2021 once Epic exclusivity lapsed. You start in Michigan on Black River, the tutorial map, and work outward through Alaska, Taymyr, Kola Peninsula, Wisconsin and a long run of seasonal regions. There is no combat and no enemy: the opposition is mud, water, load weight, fuel and your own route choice, and it supports four player co-op throughout.
Boss fights are where SnowRunner tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

Michigan Bosses
Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Starting region Recommended build: Highway with Chevrolet CK1500
Strategy
The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. Ruts persist, so a road that carried a light truck is a trap by the fifth heavy run over it. This is your primary tool here.
Key tips:
- Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
- Use Deformable mud, snow and water to create safe windows.
- Chevrolet CK1500 is enough to handle everything here.
Alaska Bosses
Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Second region Recommended build: Highway with Chevrolet CK1500
Strategy
Early game bosses test your understanding of Winching and recovery. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.
Key tips:
- Winching and recovery is critical for these fights.
- Farm Chevrolet CK1500 upgrades if you're struggling.
- Consider switching to Highway if your current setup isn't working.
Taymyr Bosses
Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Third region Recommended build: Scout with Chevrolet Kodiak C70
Strategy
Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.
Key tips:
- You need both Deformable mud, snow and water and AWD, differential lock and gear selection mastery.
- Chevrolet Kodiak C70 makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
- See our combat guide for advanced techniques.
Kola Peninsula Bosses
Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Season 2 DLC region Recommended build: Scout with Chevrolet Kodiak C70
Strategy
Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.
Key tips:
- Make sure your build is fully optimized.
- Chevrolet Kodiak C70 at max upgrade is recommended.
- Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.
Wisconsin Bosses
Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Season 3 DLC region Recommended build: Scout with Chevrolet Kodiak C70
Strategy
Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.
Key tips:
- Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
- Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
- These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.
General Boss Tips
- Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
- Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
- Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded Chevrolet Kodiak C70 trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
- Use Deformable mud, snow and water: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
- Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
