SnowRunner is Saber Interactive's off road hauling sim, published by Focus Entertainment, released in April 2020 and reaching Steam on 18 May 2021 once Epic exclusivity lapsed. You start in Michigan on Black River, the tutorial map, and work outward through Alaska, Taymyr, Kola Peninsula, Wisconsin and a long run of seasonal regions. There is no combat and no enemy: the opposition is mud, water, load weight, fuel and your own route choice, and it supports four player co-op throughout.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Send a scout through a map before committing a loaded truck
Send a scout through a map before committing a loaded truck. Watchtowers reveal the fog, upgrades sit physically in the world waiting to be found, and a five minute scout run regularly saves an hour of dragging a full trailer down a road that ends in a river.
2. Change tyres before you change engines
Change tyres before you change engines. Mud tyres on a modest truck outperform highway tyres on a powerful one everywhere that matters, and the tyre slot is the single largest handling difference in the game.
3. Use all wheel drive and differential lock as tools rather than leaving both on
Use all wheel drive and differential lock as tools rather than leaving both on. Each raises traction and each raises fuel consumption noticeably, and running both across a paved section of Michigan simply wastes a tank you will want later.
4. Winch to trees and rocks rather than to another loaded vehicle when you can
Winch to trees and rocks rather than to another loaded vehicle when you can. Anchoring to a truck that is also stuck usually drags both of you sideways, and in co-op the second truck should reposition to solid ground first.
5. Carry consumables on long runs: repair points, spare wheels and fuel
Carry consumables on long runs: repair points, spare wheels and fuel. Damage accumulates from impacts and from driving on flat tyres, and a truck that runs dry ten kilometres from a fuel station is a full recovery mission rather than an inconvenience.
6. Watch water depth against your air intake
Watch water depth against your air intake. Deep water will stall an engine that has no snorkel fitted, and rivers in Taymyr and Kola Peninsula hide depth changes that look identical from the bank.
7. Low gear exists for climbing out of ruts, not for going slowly
Low gear exists for climbing out of ruts, not for going slowly. Dropping into low or low plus keeps torque available at crawling speed, whereas trying to power out in a high gear digs the rut deeper and burns the tyres in place.
8. Plan the return trip when you plan the delivery
Plan the return trip when you plan the delivery. Ruts persist, so the road you carved on the way out is worse on the way back, and a route that worked loaded may not work at all once you have churned it.
9. Michigan holds roughly 82 missions, Alaska about 74 and Taymyr around 59, so the opening region is by some distance the largest block of work in the base game
Michigan holds roughly 82 missions, Alaska about 74 and Taymyr around 59, so the opening region is by some distance the largest block of work in the base game. Finishing Michigan properly before moving on gives you the trucks and upgrades the later regions assume you have.
10. Season regions can be entered at any point once owned, which is a trap
Season regions can be entered at any point once owned, which is a trap. Kola Peninsula and the later seasonal maps expect trucks and upgrades you will not have if you skip Taymyr, so region order still matters even when the map lets you ignore it.
Advanced Strategies
Build Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Scout (A-Tier):
- Focus on Deformable mud, snow and water combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: Chevrolet Kodiak C70
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Highway (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: Chevrolet CK1500
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how SnowRunner's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Deformable mud, snow and water + Winching and recovery: Ruts persist, so a road that carried a light truck is a trap by the fifth heavy run over it. Combined with Winching and recovery, every truck carries a winch that anchors to trees, rocks and other vehicles, and it is the difference between a stuck truck and a lost hour.
AWD, differential lock and gear selection + Tyres and upgrades found on the map: All wheel drive and diff lock both raise traction and both raise fuel burn, so they are tools rather than defaults. When paired with Tyres and upgrades found on the map, tyre choice outweighs almost every other upgrade: highway, all terrain, mud and chained tyres behave completely differently on the same slope.
Contracts, tasks and cargo loading scaling: Work comes as contracts made of tasks, plus one off tasks and timed contests. Cargo is loaded by crane or at loading points and every unit adds weight, so a full trailer changes the route you can physically take, not just the time it takes.
Equipment Efficiency
| Equipment | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Kodiak C70 | Michigan contracts and any early job where the route is bad but not catastrophic. | A Heavy Duty truck and one of the first proper haulers available in Michigan. |
| Chevrolet CK1500 | Revealing map fog, collecting upgrades and checking whether a river crossing is survivable. | A Scout class pickup, fast on anything resembling a road and useless as a hauler. |
| Azov 64131 | Taymyr and Kola Peninsula routes where the ground is bad for the entire journey rather than in patches. | An Offroad truck with genuine mud capability and a fitting list that covers most standard addons. |
| Caterpillar 745C | The single worst section of a region, and for recovering vehicles that nothing lighter can reach. | An articulated Heavy dump truck that goes places nothing else will, on enormous tyres and with an articulated joint that keeps wheels on the ground over broken terrain. |
| Pacific P16 | Heavy trailer contracts and long hauls where getting there at all matters more than getting there quickly. | A Heavy class truck built for weight rather than speed, capable of dragging trailers that stall lesser vehicles outright. |
Location Efficiency
Michigan (Starting region): The opening region across Black River, Smithville Dam, Island Lake and Drummond Island, with around 82 missions, the most of any region. Black River is the tutorial map and Smithville Dam acts as the hub connecting to everything else.
Alaska (Second region): North Port, Mountain River, White Valley and Pedro Bay, roughly 74 missions and the first region where snow and ice matter more than mud. Grip changes without the ground looking any different, which catches out Michigan drivers.
Taymyr (Third region): Drowned Lands, Quarry, Zimnegorsk and Rift in the Russian Federation, around 59 missions and the base game's hardest region. Drowned Lands in particular is where most players first accept that a route is genuinely impossible in the truck they brought.
Kola Peninsula (Season 2 DLC region): Lake Kovd and Imandra, added with Season 2: Explore and Expand. Two large maps in the far north with heavy snow cover and long distances between objectives.
Wisconsin (Season 3 DLC region): Black Badger Lake and Grainwoods River, added with Season 3: Locate and Deliver, and the region that introduced logging to the game. Log hauling changes both the trailers you use and the physics of your load.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Driving a loaded truck into an unexplored map instead of scouting it first with a Scout class vehicle.
- Leaving differential lock and all wheel drive engaged on paved roads and running out of fuel mid contract.
- Buying engine upgrades before tyre upgrades, when tyres are the larger handling change by a wide margin.
- Winching to another stuck vehicle and pulling both trucks further into the same bog.
- Jumping into a season region straight after Michigan without the trucks and upgrades the later maps assume.
Pro Quick Tips
- Send a scout through a map before committing a loaded truck. Watchtowers reveal the fog, upgrades sit physically in the world waiting to be found, and a five minute scout run regularly saves an hour of dragging a full trailer down a road that ends in a river.

- Start with Highway, switch to Scout when ready
- Invest in Chevrolet Kodiak C70 above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Michigan → Alaska → Taymyr → Kola Peninsula → Wisconsin. See our maps guide
- Deformable mud, snow and water + Winching and recovery together are stronger than either alone
