Star Trek Online launched on 2 February 2010 and has been free to play since 2011, which means the game a new captain meets in 2026 is sixteen years of accumulated systems rather than the one Cryptic shipped. The level cap has sat at 65 since the Victory is Life expansion, there are over 160 story episodes, and the newest expansion, Undiscovered, arrived on PC on 7 July 2026 and on consoles on 29 July. Almost every mission alternates between starship combat in space and a ground away team, so a build that only works in one half will stall.
This guide covers everything you need: core mechanics, the best builds, equipment worth investing in, location progression, and the tips that actually make a difference.
Core Mechanics
Split space and ground combat
Missions cut between starship fights and away team sections, and the two use separate gear, separate skills and separate traits. A captain with a finished ship and a default ground kit will feel like two different characters.
Bridge Officer seating and ship builds
Your ship's Bridge Officer seats decide which abilities you can slot, and the seat layout matters more than the hull. A ship with two Lieutenant Commander tactical seats plays nothing like one with the same hull points and a science layout.
Reputation projects across six tiers
Reputations open at level 50 and run on daily project submissions rather than skill. Season Fifteen added a sixth tier to every reputation, and reputation traits are some of the strongest passive bonuses in the game.
Primary and secondary Captain Specializations
You run one primary and one secondary specialization from a pool that includes Command Officer, Intelligence Officer, Pilot, Temporal Operative, Miracle Worker, Constable, Commando and Strategist. Primary enables every learned ability in that tree; secondary only enables tier 1 and 2. Points keep accruing past level 65.
Gear upgrades to Mark XV and Epic
The Gear Upgrade System raises equipment to Mark XV and rolls for rarity increases up to Epic along the way. Higher quality Tech Upgrades and Upgrade Accelerators raise those odds, which is where most of a captain's currency ends up going.
For a deeper dive into how these systems interact, see our Star Trek Online combat guide.

Equipment Guide
| Equipment | Why It Matters | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Phaser beam arrays | Federation standard and the easiest energy type to gear because mission and reputation rewards hand them out constantly. | First endgame ship on a Federation captain who wants gear to fall into their lap |
| Disruptor cannons | The Klingon and Romulan standard. | Klingon Defense Force and Romulan Republic captains, and group content |
| Antiproton weapons | The critical severity option. | Late build refinement once you are already stacking Critical Chance |
| Quantum torpedoes | High single hit damage against hull, useless against intact shields. | Group content where somebody else is stripping shields |
| Dual Heavy Cannons | The highest damage per shot in space and the narrowest firing arc. | Manoeuvrable hulls flown at close range by a pilot who enjoys positioning |
Phaser beam arrays: Federation standard and the easiest energy type to gear because mission and reputation rewards hand them out constantly. Their proc chance to disable a subsystem is situational but free.
Disruptor cannons: The Klingon and Romulan standard. The disruptor proc lowers target damage resistance, which helps a whole team rather than only the shooter.
Antiproton weapons: The critical severity option. Antiproton carries an inherent severity bonus, which is why it turns up in so many high end builds despite being harder to acquire early.
Quantum torpedoes: High single hit damage against hull, useless against intact shields. Quantum launchers reward a build that has already dropped the target's shield facing.
Dual Heavy Cannons: The highest damage per shot in space and the narrowest firing arc. They only fire forward, so they belong on escorts, raiders and warbirds that can hold a nose-on approach.

Location Progression
| Location | Level Range | Key Rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Earth Spacedock | Levels 1 to 65, used throughout | Ship requisitions, the exchange, Duty Officer assignments and tailor access |
| Deep Space Nine | Mid game through level 65 | Gamma Task Force reputation projects, Dominion story episodes and Alpha Quadrant travel |
| Qo'noS First City | Levels 1 to 65 for Klingon aligned captains | Klingon ship requisitions, faction episodes and honour based story arcs |
| New Romulus Command | Levels 30 to 65 | Romulan reputation gear, Republic episodes and allied faction choice content |
| Deep Space Encounters | Scales with level, best value at 65 | Marks for reputation, dilithium and a repeatable source of endgame currency |
Earth Spacedock: The Federation social hub and the place most new captains do their first vendor, requisition and Duty Officer business. Ship requisition, the exchange and mission contacts all sit here.
Deep Space Nine: The Gamma Quadrant staging hub and the front door for the Dominion storyline. The Jem'Hadar Vanguard start puts you here early.
Qo'noS First City: The Klingon Defense Force capital and hub. Klingon captains handle requisition and mission contacts here rather than at Earth Spacedock.
New Romulus Command: The Romulan Republic base built out during the Legacy of Romulus era. It anchors the Romulan reputation and the Republic's own storyline.
Deep Space Encounters: The roaming procedural mission system across the Alpha, Beta and Delta Quadrants, overhauled in the Undiscovered expansion on 7 July 2026. Enter one from the sector map and fight whatever is there.
See our maps & locations guide for detailed area breakdowns and our walkthrough for the optimal progression path.
Tips That Actually Matter
- Pick one energy type and run every weapon on the ship in it. Tactical consoles boost a single energy type, so a phaser and disruptor mix means half your consoles are dead weight regardless of the numbers on the items.
- Do not start upgrading gear until you know you are keeping it. Upgrade materials are the real currency sink in this game, and pouring Tech Upgrades into a mission reward beam you replace at 65 is thousands of dilithium gone.
- Slot both a primary and a secondary specialization as soon as you have points. Primary enables all learned abilities in that tree, secondary only tiers 1 and 2, so put your deepest tree in the primary slot.
- Open reputation projects the day you hit level 50 and submit them daily. Reputations run on a real time schedule, not on effort, so a captain who starts on day one finishes weeks ahead of one who starts at full gear.
- Build your away team gear alongside your ship. Ground combat is roughly half of the episode content, and a Mark XV kit frame with matching modules changes away missions from a slog into a formality.
- Fly a cruiser with beam arrays for your first endgame build even if cannons look better on paper. Broadside beams forgive positioning mistakes; Dual Heavy Cannons punish every one of them.
- Run Admiralty and Duty Officer assignments while you are doing something else. Both are idle systems that pay dilithium, expertise and marks for a handful of clicks per day.
- Do the daily and weekly Endeavours. They are short, they scale to whatever you already fly, and the Endeavour perk track is a permanent account wide power increase rather than a one off reward.
- Two Experimental Ship Upgrade Tokens take a T6-X ship to T6-X2, which adds a second device slot, universal console slot and starship trait slot on top of the first upgrade. Spend those on a hull you intend to keep for years.
- The Steam client and the Arc client run the same account on the same servers. If you played years ago through Arc, log in with those credentials rather than starting a new captain.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Mixing energy types across a ship, which wastes most of the tactical console slots.
- Ignoring ground gear until an away mission wall stops progress cold.
- Upgrading levelling gear to Mark XV instead of saving materials for endgame equipment.
- Leaving reputation projects unstarted past level 50 and losing weeks of passive progress.
- Buying a hull for its looks without reading the Bridge Officer seat layout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Star Trek Online free, and is there a subscription?
It is free to play and has been since 2011. A paid subscription and a lifetime option exist and grant conveniences and stipends, but the full story, every faction and endgame content are reachable without paying.
What is the level cap in 2026?
Level 65, which corresponds to Fleet Admiral for Federation captains, Dahar Master for Klingon captains and Honored First for Jem'Hadar. It has sat there since the Victory is Life expansion, and specialization points keep accruing after you reach it.
What is the newest expansion?
Undiscovered, which reached PC on 7 July 2026 and consoles on 29 July. It rebuilds the older Ultimate Klingon storyline with new visuals and cutscenes, brings back Robert Picardo as The Doctor alongside Lisa LoCicero as Lieutenant Miral Paris, and overhauls Deep Space Encounters.
Which faction should a new player pick?
Federation if you want the largest amount of content and the gentlest introduction. Klingon Defense Force and Romulan Republic both start later in the story and merge into the shared arcs, and Jem'Hadar Vanguard starts at a high level with strong gear but skips most of the early game.
Is the Steam version separate from the Arc version?
No. Same servers, same characters, same account. Steam is one launcher for the same live game, and an old Arc account works on it.
