Star Trek Online launched on 2 February 2010 and has been free to play since 2011, which means the game a new captain meets in 2026 is sixteen years of accumulated systems rather than the one Cryptic shipped. The level cap has sat at 65 since the Victory is Life expansion, there are over 160 story episodes, and the newest expansion, Undiscovered, arrived on PC on 7 July 2026 and on consoles on 29 July. Almost every mission alternates between starship combat in space and a ground away team, so a build that only works in one half will stall.
Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.
Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Tier | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phaser beam arrays | S | First endgame ship on a Federation captain who wants gear to fall into their lap | Federation standard and the easiest energy type to gear because mission and reputation rewards hand them out constantly. |
| Disruptor cannons | A | Klingon Defense Force and Romulan Republic captains, and group content | The Klingon and Romulan standard. |
| Antiproton weapons | A | Late build refinement once you are already stacking Critical Chance | The critical severity option. |
| Quantum torpedoes | B | Group content where somebody else is stripping shields | High single hit damage against hull, useless against intact shields. |
| Dual Heavy Cannons | B | Manoeuvrable hulls flown at close range by a pilot who enjoys positioning | The highest damage per shot in space and the narrowest firing arc. |

Equipment Progression Path
The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear Earth Spacedock
- Disruptor cannons → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Antiproton weapons → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Phaser beam arrays → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Equipment Tips
- Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Pick one energy type and run every weapon on the ship in it. Tactical consoles boost a single energy type, so a phaser and disruptor mix means half your consoles are dead weight regardless of the numbers on the items.
- Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
