This Star Trek Online tier list ranks every major option by overall effectiveness. Rankings factor in damage output, survivability, versatility, gear requirements, and how well each option scales.
Tier definitions: S = best in class, always a strong pick. A = strong and competitive, minor weaknesses. B = solid but clearly outperformed in most situations. C = viable only for players who enjoy the playstyle.

Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Best With | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Phaser beam arrays | First endgame ship on a Federation captain who wants gear to fall into their lap | Federation standard and the easiest energy type to gear because mission and reputation rewards hand them out constantly. |
| Disruptor cannons | Klingon Defense Force and Romulan Republic captains, and group content | The Klingon and Romulan standard. |
| Antiproton weapons | Late build refinement once you are already stacking Critical Chance | The critical severity option. |
| Quantum torpedoes | Group content where somebody else is stripping shields | High single hit damage against hull, useless against intact shields. |
| Dual Heavy Cannons | Manoeuvrable hulls flown at close range by a pilot who enjoys positioning | The highest damage per shot in space and the narrowest firing arc. |

Equipment Analysis
Phaser beam arrays: Federation standard and the easiest energy type to gear because mission and reputation rewards hand them out constantly. Their proc chance to disable a subsystem is situational but free.
Disruptor cannons: The Klingon and Romulan standard. The disruptor proc lowers target damage resistance, which helps a whole team rather than only the shooter.
Antiproton weapons: The critical severity option. Antiproton carries an inherent severity bonus, which is why it turns up in so many high end builds despite being harder to acquire early.
Quantum torpedoes: High single hit damage against hull, useless against intact shields. Quantum launchers reward a build that has already dropped the target's shield facing.
Dual Heavy Cannons: The highest damage per shot in space and the narrowest firing arc. They only fire forward, so they belong on escorts, raiders and warbirds that can hold a nose-on approach.
Meta Analysis
The current meta in Star Trek Online centers on Split space and ground combat and Bridge Officer seating and ship builds. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.
What's strong right now:
- Tactical captain with Phaser beam arrays is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
- Reputation projects across six tiers builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
- Science captain remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.
What's underrated:
- Engineering captain is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
- Antiproton weapons offers excellent performance for its investment level.
What's overhyped:
- Pure Jem'Hadar Vanguard captain builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
Quick Picks by Situation
| Situation | Best Build | Best Gear | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
