Stardew Valley is ConcernedApe's farming simulation RPG where you inherit your grandfather's farm and build a life in a small rural town. Behind its cozy pixel art exterior lies an incredibly deep game with farming optimization, mine diving, fishing, relationships with 12 romanceable characters, and multiple endgame goals. The 1.6 update added a new farm type, festivals, and extensive new content. With over 30 million copies sold, it's the definitive modern farming sim.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Pelican Town
The main village with all NPCs, shops, and social activities. Pierre's sells seeds, the Blacksmith upgrades tools, the Saloon serves food and has arcade games. Talk to villagers daily and check the calendar for birthdays and festivals.
Level/Difficulty: Year 1+ Key Rewards: NPC friendship, shop access, Community Center, festival participation
What to Do in Pelican Town
- Learn seasonal crops. Each season (Spring, Summer, Fall — 28 days each) has specific crops that die when the season changes. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Rancher as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
- Plant Parsnips on Day 1 Spring for fast money and Farming XP. Then buy Strawberry Seeds at the Egg Festival (Day 13) and plant them for Spring profit.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Infinity Blade or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand seasonal crops fundamentals
- Rancher selected and functional
- Pelican Town main content cleared
- Ready for The Mines
Phase 2: Early Game — The Mines
120 floors of combat and mining, accessed from the mountain. Floors 1-40 have Copper, 41-79 have Iron, 80-120 have Gold. The elevator saves every 10 floors. Floor 100 has the Star Drop. Complete the Mines before Year 1 Winter.
Level/Difficulty: Spring Year 1+ Key Rewards: Copper/Iron/Gold Ore, Gems, Star Drop (Floor 100), combat gear
What to Do in The Mines
- Work on relationship building. 12 romanceable NPCs and many befriendable villagers. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Infinity Blade if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Sprinklers automate watering by mid-game. Quality Sprinklers (3x3 area) need Iron and Gold Bars. Iridium Sprinklers (5x5) need Iridium. This frees your entire morning.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Skull Cavern.
- Consider whether Farmer might suit your playstyle better than Rancher.
Phase 2 Checklist
- relationship building integrated into gameplay
- Infinity Blade acquired
- The Mines fully cleared
- Ready for Skull Cavern
Phase 3: Mid Game — Skull Cavern
Infinite-depth dungeon in the Desert requiring the Skull Key (Floor 120 Mines). No elevators — use Staircases to skip floors. Iridium Ore spawns increasingly after Floor 30. Prismatic Shards drop from Iridium Nodes. The true endgame challenge.
Level/Difficulty: Mid-late Year 1+ Key Rewards: Iridium Ore, Prismatic Shards (Galaxy Sword), rare gems, Auto-Petter
What to Do in Skull Cavern
- Master mine combat. The Mines (120 floors) and Skull Cavern (infinite floors) contain ores, gems, and enemies. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Galaxy Sword. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Kegs turn fruit into wine worth 3x the base price. A Starfruit (750g) becomes Starfruit Wine (2,250g). With Artisan profession, it's 3,150g. This is the endgame money strategy.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in fishing for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- mine combat mastered
- Galaxy Sword acquired or in progress
- Skull Cavern fully cleared
- Ready for Ginger Island
Phase 4: Late Game — Ginger Island
A tropical island unlocked post-Community Center by repairing Willy's boat. Contains Volcano Dungeon, Walnut puzzles, second farmable area, and unique crops (Taro, Pineapple). 130 Golden Walnuts unlock all island content.
Level/Difficulty: Year 2+ (post-Community Center) Key Rewards: Qi Challenges, Golden Walnuts, Fairy Dust, Qi Gems, Volcano Forge
What to Do in Ginger Island
- Finalize your build. You should be running Farmer or Rancher with optimized gear.
- Galaxy Sword should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Check the Traveling Cart every Friday and Sunday — it sells rare items including Red Cabbage Seeds (needed for Community Center) and occasionally Ancient Fruit Seeds.
- community center bundles optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Calico Desert.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Galaxy Sword upgraded to max
- Ginger Island fully cleared
- Ready for Calico Desert
Phase 5: Endgame — Calico Desert
Accessed by fixing the Bus (Community Center or JojaMart). Contains the Skull Cavern entrance, Sandy's Oasis shop (Cactus Seeds, rare items), and the three pillars for the Galaxy Sword. Coconuts and Cactus Fruit grow here.
Level/Difficulty: Mid Year 1+ Key Rewards: Skull Cavern access, Galaxy Sword, Sandy's shop, Starfruit Seeds
What to Do in Calico Desert
- Calico Desert tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Skull Cavern bombs clear floors faster than the pickaxe. Bring 50+ Mega Bombs, Staircases for spiral floors, and Spicy Eel for luck and speed buffs.
- The endgame loop: run Calico Desert, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Artisan for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where community center bundles mastery separates good players from great ones.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Calico Desert fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Not buying Strawberry Seeds at the Spring 13 Egg Festival — Strawberries are the best Spring profit crop and can't be bought anywhere else until the next year.
- Hoarding items instead of selling them — you need gold for seeds, upgrades, and buildings. Sell surplus crops and fish, keeping only what you need for bundles.
- Ignoring the Community Center — completing bundles unlocks the Greenhouse, Mine Carts, Bus, and more. Start working on bundles from Day 1.
- Planting single-harvest crops when multi-harvest crops are available — Blueberries (Summer) and Cranberries (Fall) keep producing every few days, giving much more profit per seed.
- Passing out at 2:00 AM instead of going to bed — passing out costs you 1,000g and you start the next day with reduced energy. Always get to bed by 12:00-1:00 AM.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
