Team Fortress 2 is Valve's legendary class-based FPS that has maintained an active community since 2007 through its unique art style, deep class mechanics, and the hat economy. Nine classes — Scout, Soldier, Pyro, Demoman, Heavy, Engineer, Medic, Sniper, and Spy — each play fundamentally differently, creating a team dynamic where every role contributes uniquely to victory. The game's cartoon art style has aged brilliantly, and the movement mechanics (rocket jumping, sticky jumping, trimping) add skill expression beyond pure aim. While the competitive scene is smaller than its peak, casual servers remain populated and community servers host everything from custom game modes to trading hubs. TF2 is free-to-play with cosmetic trading economy.
Your choice of weapons defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

S-Tier: Scattergun
Scout's primary — a 6-shot shotgun dealing up to 105 damage at point-blank range. The go-to Scout weapon with no downsides. Two meatshots (close-range hits) kill any non-overhealed class except Heavy. Fast firing speed rewards aggressive play.

A-Tier: Rocket Launcher
Soldier's primary firing rockets that deal 90-112 damage with splash radius. Rockets travel at 1100 units/second — fast but dodgeable. Splash damage means you don't need direct hits. Rocket jumping (shooting at your feet while jumping) propels you across the map.

Weapons Progression Path
The order you should acquire weapons as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear 2Fort
- Rocket Launcher → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Minigun → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Scattergun → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Weapons Tips
- Always upgrade your primary weapon before diversifying — one strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your weapons to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Medic builds Uber faster on hurt teammates (maximum rate is 2.5% per second on players below 142.5% health). Soldiers can damage themselves with rocket jumps to speed up their Medic's Uber build.
- Check our tier list for how weapons rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
