Terraria Classes & Characters — Complete Guide

Every Terraria build and class explained. Strengths, weaknesses, best gear, and which to pick for your playstyle.

Terraria is Re-Logic's 2D sandbox adventure game that has sold over 44 million copies since 2011. Often called '2D Minecraft,' it's actually far more focused on combat, boss progression, and RPG-style gear upgrades. With over 5,000 items, 400+ enemies, and a progression system spanning Pre-Hardmode and Hardmode phases, Terraria offers hundreds of hours of content. The game's final major update (1.4.4 'Labor of Love') added even more content to an already staggering amount.

Choosing the right build shapes your entire experience. This guide breaks down every option — what they're good at, what they struggle with, and which one matches your playstyle. For optimized builds with full gear sets, see our builds guide.

Which Build Should You Pick?

For Beginners

Ranged is the clear winner. It's forgiving, teaches core mechanics, and remains competitive into endgame. Follow our beginner's guide for the best first-session experience.

For Maximum Performance

Melee is the top pick once you understand the game's mechanics. Pair it with Zenith for the strongest overall setup.

For a Challenge

Mixed offers the highest skill ceiling. It's punishing when misplayed but incredibly rewarding when mastered. Only recommended after you've completed the game with another build.

For Group Play

Summoner shines in cooperative content with utility and team support capabilities.
