Terraria is Re-Logic's 2D sandbox adventure game that has sold over 44 million copies since 2011. Often called '2D Minecraft,' it's actually far more focused on combat, boss progression, and RPG-style gear upgrades. With over 5,000 items, 400+ enemies, and a progression system spanning Pre-Hardmode and Hardmode phases, Terraria offers hundreds of hours of content. The game's final major update (1.4.4 'Labor of Love') added even more content to an already staggering amount.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.

Phase 1: Getting Started — Forest
The starting biome with basic enemies (Slimes, Zombies, Eyes). Contains surface chests with early weapons and accessories. Build your first NPC housing here. The forest is safe enough for early exploration and resource gathering.
Level/Difficulty: Pre-Hardmode start Key Rewards: Basic ores, surface chest loot, NPC housing location
What to Do in Forest
- Learn boss progression. Terraria has a specific boss order gating progression: Eye of Cthulhu → Eater of Worlds/Brain → Skeletron → Wall of Flesh (triggers Hardmode) → Mechanical Bosses → Plantera → Golem → Lunatic Cultist → Moon Lord. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Ranged as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
- Build NPC houses early for shop access. The Arms Dealer, Nurse, and Dryad are the most important early NPCs. Valid housing needs walls, a door, table, chair, and light.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Terra Blade or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand boss progression fundamentals
- Ranged selected and functional
- Forest main content cleared
- Ready for Underground Jungle
Phase 2: Early Game — Underground Jungle
A dangerous underground biome filled with powerful enemies, Bee Hives, and Jungle Temples. Contains Jungle Shrines with unique accessories. The Plantera bulb spawns here in Hardmode, gating endgame progression. Life Fruit increases max HP.
Level/Difficulty: Mid Pre-Hardmode through Hardmode Key Rewards: Bee weapons, Jungle Shrine loot, Plantera access, Life Fruit (+20 HP)
What to Do in Underground Jungle
- Work on biome-specific loot. Each biome (Forest, Desert, Jungle, Corruption/Crimson, Hallow, etc. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Terra Blade if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Mine Hellstone in the Underworld before triggering Hardmode for Molten Armor — it's the strongest Pre-Hardmode armor and carries you into early Hardmode.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Dungeon.
- Consider whether Melee might suit your playstyle better than Ranged.
Phase 2 Checklist
- biome-specific loot integrated into gameplay
- Terra Blade acquired
- Underground Jungle fully cleared
- Ready for Dungeon
Phase 3: Mid Game — Dungeon
Accessed after defeating Skeletron, the Dungeon contains color-coded locked chests, unique weapons, and post-Plantera enemies with endgame drops. The Mechanic NPC is rescued here. Entering without defeating Skeletron summons an instakill guardian.
Level/Difficulty: Post-Skeletron through Post-Plantera Key Rewards: Dungeon weapons (Muramasa, Aqua Scepter), NPCs, Post-Plantera ectoplasm drops
What to Do in Dungeon
- Master NPC housing. NPCs move into valid houses (6x10 minimum, door, table, chair, light source, walls). This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Zenith. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Use platforms for boss arenas — a long runway of wooden platforms (200+ blocks) gives you room to dodge. Add Campfires and Heart Lanterns for regeneration buffs.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in wire and mechanisms for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- NPC housing mastered
- Zenith acquired or in progress
- Dungeon fully cleared
- Ready for Underworld
Phase 4: Late Game — Underworld
The bottom layer with lava, Hellstone ore, and the Wall of Flesh boss. Mine Hellstone for the strongest Pre-Hardmode armor and weapons. The Wall of Flesh fight triggers Hardmode — prepare thoroughly before summoning it.
Level/Difficulty: Late Pre-Hardmode Key Rewards: Hellstone/Obsidian for Molten Armor, Wall of Flesh drops, Hardmode trigger
What to Do in Underworld
- Finalize your build. You should be running Melee or Ranged with optimized gear.
- Zenith should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Reforge weapons and accessories at the Goblin Tinkerer for optimal modifiers. 'Legendary' for swords, 'Unreal' for guns, 'Mythical' for magic weapons, 'Warding' for defense accessories.
- class specialization optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Hallow.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Zenith upgraded to max
- Underworld fully cleared
- Ready for Hallow
Phase 5: Endgame — Hallow
A sparkly biome that spawns after defeating Wall of Flesh. Contains unique enemies, Crystal Shards, and the Enchanted Sword shrine. The Hallow is dangerous but provides essential Hardmode crafting materials. Holy Water spreads the Hallow biome.
Level/Difficulty: Early Hardmode+ Key Rewards: Crystal Shards, Hallowed Bars (from Mechanical Bosses), Unicorn mount, Rainbow Rod
What to Do in Hallow
- Hallow tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Fishing provides powerful pre-Hardmode gear. The Reaver Shark pickaxe (from ocean fishing) skips mining progression. Crate potions + fishing potions maximize rewards.
- The endgame loop: run Hallow, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Mixed for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where class specialization mastery separates good players from great ones.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Hallow fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Triggering Hardmode (killing Wall of Flesh) without preparation — Hardmode enemies are dramatically stronger. Have Molten Armor, a good weapon, and contained biome spread tunnels first.
- Ignoring NPC housing requirements — NPCs provide essential services. The Nurse heals you, Arms Dealer sells ammo, Goblin Tinkerer reforges gear. Build houses immediately.
- Not reforging accessories to Warding (+4 defense each) — five Warding accessories give +20 defense, equivalent to a full armor upgrade. Essential for survival.
- Building flat-ground boss arenas — platforms are much better because you can fall through them to dodge vertical attacks. Build long platform runways.
- Selling materials before checking if they're crafting ingredients — many seemingly junk items are components for important recipes. Check the Guide's crafting menu first.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
