CodeManu and Endless Coffee build this one, HypeTrain Digital publishes it, and it entered Early Access on 23 May 2025 with more than 2,000 items and over 500 handcrafted structures already in. You wash up on a main island with three larger islands and a scatter of smaller ones around it, and progress is gated by tool tier rather than by character level. There are no skill trees at all: whatever you have equipped decides whether you are a melee, ranged or magic character that afternoon, and the developers built a set of miscellaneous accessories they call the Classless Class for people who refuse to pick. Bosses are summoned deliberately with crafted items rather than stumbled into, so the pace of a save is entirely yours to set.

Starting Tinkerlands can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.

What Kind of Game Is This?

Tinkerlands is a survival game built around Gear defined classes with no skill tree and Boss summon items and ritual altars. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.

What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.

Choosing Your First Build

BuildBeginner RatingWhy
MeleeExcellent for beginnersBalanced approach
RangedExcellent for beginnersBalanced approach
MagicExcellent for beginnersBalanced approach
ClasslessExcellent for beginnersBalanced approach
HybridExcellent for beginnersBalanced approach

Our recommendation: Start with Ranged. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.

Avoid Hybrid as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.

First Session Step-by-Step

Step 1: Learn Gear defined classes with no skill tree

There is no levelling and no talent tree, so your class is whatever you are wearing. Accessories are designed specifically for melee, ranged and magic, and a further set with miscellaneous effects forms what the developers internally call the Classless Class, which exists for builds that do not fit the three archetypes.

This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how Gear defined classes with no skill tree works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.

Step 2: Head to Grasslands

The starter biome on the main island, where the Guide waits and Slimeking is summoned. The wandering Bard also appears here and grants a heat resistance buff, which is worth hunting down before any trip into the Desert Biome.

Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.

Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade

Look for Spider Bow: it's the most accessible early upgrade. Dropped by the Mineral Spider in the centre of the Caves. Together with the Spider Staff and the Jungle Map it forms the single most valuable boss drop table in the early game, since the Jungle Map is what unlocks access to Quetzalcoatl.

Step 4: Understand Boss summon items and ritual altars

Almost every boss is summoned rather than found. Slimeking needs a Slime Voodoo Doll made from 50 Mucus, Mineral Spider needs a Mineral Spider Egg made from 50 Mineral Silk, Frog Prince takes 5 Eye of Newt placed on an altar, and Banshee wants 3 Red Candles at a Ritual Altar.

This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.

Step 5: Push to Swamp

Home of the Frog Prince, summoned by placing 5 Eye of Newt on an altar, and later the site of the Baba Yaga encounter triggered by a purple fog event. It is also one of the four Thumper sites for the Iron Devourer ritual.

Essential Mechanics Explained

Gear defined classes with no skill tree

There is no levelling and no talent tree, so your class is whatever you are wearing. Accessories are designed specifically for melee, ranged and magic, and a further set with miscellaneous effects forms what the developers internally call the Classless Class, which exists for builds that do not fit the three archetypes.

Boss summon items and ritual altars

Almost every boss is summoned rather than found. Slimeking needs a Slime Voodoo Doll made from 50 Mucus, Mineral Spider needs a Mineral Spider Egg made from 50 Mineral Silk, Frog Prince takes 5 Eye of Newt placed on an altar, and Banshee wants 3 Red Candles at a Ritual Altar.

Tool tier gating on harvesting

Higher tier rocks and hardwoods simply cannot be harvested without reinforced steel or the magic tools, so the map opens in a fixed order regardless of how brave you are. The Magic Pickaxe and Magic Axe, both found on the corner islands, run on mana rather than durability.

Settlement NPCs who run shops and quests

NPCs you invite to your settlement open shops, hand out quests and help in fights. The Guide explains crafting through a right click menu, the Bard wanders the Grasslands and grants heat resistance, and travelling merchants sell rotating stock including the Healing Staff, a ranged weapon that fires a restorative projectile.

Four player online co-op

Up to four players share one world online. Buffs and summons reset when you move between islands, so a co-op group crossing to a new island should re-apply food buffs on arrival rather than before departure.

Common Beginner Mistakes

1. Assuming there is a hidden levelling system

There is no experience and no skill tree, so a character that feels weak needs different gear rather than more time played.

2. Travelling to the Snow Biome or Desert Biome without the Warm Scarf or Desert Goggles, then losing the trip to an environmental debuff rather than to any enemy

3. Gathering a boss summon item and heading straight in without healing supplies, since summons like the Cursed Doll are consumed on use and cost 20 Dolls and 20 Needles to rebuild

4. Spreading gear across melee, ranged and magic accessories at once

The accessory sets are archetype specific, so a mixed set is weaker than committing to one line.

5. Applying food buffs before an island crossing

They reset on arrival, which wastes the food and leaves you fighting the new island unbuffed.

First 5 Hours Checklist

  • Understand Gear defined classes with no skill tree and Boss summon items and ritual altars
  • Choose Ranged as starting build
  • Clear Grasslands main content
  • Acquire Spider Bow or equivalent upgrade
  • Reach Swamp
  • Craft Desert Goggles from 4 Leather, 4 Glass and 1 String before your first desert trip. Going without means fighting the heat rather than the monsters.
  • The Warm Scarf takes 4 Fluff, 1 Yeti Fur and 1 String and stops the Frozen debuff in the Snow Biome, which is also where the cave entrance sits.

Tips for New Players

  1. Craft Desert Goggles from 4 Leather, 4 Glass and 1 String before your first desert trip. Going without means fighting the heat rather than the monsters.
  2. The Warm Scarf takes 4 Fluff, 1 Yeti Fur and 1 String and stops the Frozen debuff in the Snow Biome, which is also where the cave entrance sits.
  3. Hot Drinks brewed with Fire Flowers are sold by the Merchant and cover cold protection when you have not gathered Yeti Fur yet.
  4. Recall Scrolls cost 20 MP and return you to your ship. Carrying one turns any bad cave dive into an inconvenience rather than a lost inventory.
  5. Press Tab to Quick Stack into nearby chests, and rename the chests so the sorting actually lands where you expect it to.
  6. Alt and left click locks an item so you cannot accidentally quick stack or drop the weapon you just spent an hour earning.
  7. Buffs and summons reset when you cross to another island. Eat your food buff after you arrive, not on the dock before you leave.
  8. The Magic Pickaxe and Magic Axe are found on the corner islands and run on mana instead of durability, which removes tool repair from the rest of the game.
  9. Progression is gated by tool tier, not by your skill. If a rock will not break, the answer is reinforced steel or a magic tool, never a better technique.
  10. Travelling merchants carry rotating stock including the Healing Staff, a ranged weapon that fires a restorative projectile. Check them every time they appear because the stock does not repeat reliably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tinkerlands have classes?

Not in the usual sense. There is no levelling and no skill tree, so what you have equipped defines you as melee, ranged or magic. Accessories are designed for those three lines, and a further set of miscellaneous accessories forms what the developers call the Classless Class.

How many bosses are there?

The Steam page promises more than ten and the current Early Access build has well past that, including Slimeking, Frog Prince, Mineral Spider, Iron Devourer, Overgrown Crab, Grim Reaper, Quetzalcoatl, Baba Yaga, Corrupted King, the Huntress, Banshee, Tut and Cmon, Trichroma Fairy and the Deep Sea King.

What order should I fight the bosses in?

Slimeking first, then Frog Prince, then Mineral Spider, then Iron Devourer, then the Grim Reaper. That order matches the tool tier gating and hands you the Jungle Map from Mineral Spider, which is what opens Quetzalcoatl later on.

Can I play Tinkerlands in co-op?

Yes, up to four players online in one shared world. The main thing to know is that buffs and summons reset when the group crosses to a different island, so re-apply food buffs after arriving rather than before setting out.

Is it finished?

No. It launched into Early Access on 23 May 2025 with over 2,000 items and 500 handcrafted structures, and the developers planned six to eight months in Early Access with more biome content to come. The Deep Sea King in Coraline Fields is currently the end of the progression.
