Undertale is Toby Fox's 2015 role playing game about a child who falls into the Underground and has to find a way out. Its hook is that every encounter can be ended without killing: you dodge patterned attacks inside a small box, then use ACT and MERCY instead of FIGHT. A single run takes roughly six to seven hours, and the game quietly records what you chose to do along the way.

Boss fights are where Undertale tests everything you've learned. This guide covers strategies for bosses across all areas, organized by progression order. For general combat techniques, see our combat guide.

The Ruins Bosses

Area difficulty: Easy Recommended level: Opening 45 to 60 minutes Recommended build: True Pacifist Route with Toy Knife

Strategy

The first bosses teach core combat mechanics. Focus on learning patterns rather than dealing damage. On an enemy turn your SOUL becomes a small red heart inside a rectangular box and you dodge projectile patterns with the arrow keys. This is your primary tool here.

Key tips:

  • Don't rush. Learn the attack patterns first.
  • Use Bullet dodging in the SOUL box to create safe windows.
  • Toy Knife is enough to handle everything here.

Snowdin Bosses

Area difficulty: Moderate Recommended level: Roughly one to two hours in Recommended build: True Pacifist Route with Toy Knife

Strategy

Early game bosses test your understanding of FIGHT, ACT, ITEM and MERCY. Players who skipped learning this mechanic will hit a wall here.

Key tips:

  • FIGHT, ACT, ITEM and MERCY is critical for these fights.
  • Farm Toy Knife upgrades if you're struggling.
  • Consider switching to True Pacifist Route if your current setup isn't working.

Waterfall Bosses

Area difficulty: Hard Recommended level: Roughly two to four hours in Recommended build: Neutral Route with Stick

Strategy

Mid-game bosses are the major skill check. They combine multiple mechanics and punish players who rely on a single strategy.

Key tips:

  • You need both Bullet dodging in the SOUL box and LOVE, EXP and LV mastery.
  • Stick makes a significant difference. Get it before attempting these.
  • See our combat guide for advanced techniques.

Hotland Bosses

Area difficulty: Very Hard Recommended level: Roughly four to five hours in Recommended build: Neutral Route with Stick

Strategy

Late-game bosses are serious challenges. Build optimization matters as much as mechanical skill.

Key tips:

  • Make sure your build is fully optimized.
  • Stick at max upgrade is recommended.
  • Study each boss's attack patterns. Most have 2-3 phases.

The CORE Bosses

Area difficulty: Extreme Recommended level: Roughly five to six hours in Recommended build: Neutral Route with Stick

Strategy

Endgame bosses are the ultimate test. They require mastery of all combat systems and an optimized build.

Key tips:

  • Top-tier build with best-in-slot gear is mandatory.
  • Master every mechanic. See our combat guide.
  • These fights reward patience and pattern recognition above all else.

General Boss Tips

  1. Learn before you fight: Spend your first attempt observing attack patterns. Don't try to win on attempt one.
  2. Match your build: Some bosses favor certain builds over others. Don't be afraid to switch.
  3. Upgrade your equipment: A max-upgraded Stick trivializes fights that seem impossible with weaker gear.
  4. Use Bullet dodging in the SOUL box: The core combat mechanic is your best defensive tool in every boss fight.
  5. Check the walkthrough: Our walkthrough tells you when you're ready for each boss.
