Undertale is Toby Fox's 2015 role playing game about a child who falls into the Underground and has to find a way out. Its hook is that every encounter can be ended without killing: you dodge patterned attacks inside a small box, then use ACT and MERCY instead of FIGHT. A single run takes roughly six to seven hours, and the game quietly records what you chose to do along the way.
Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

Equipment Progression Path
The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear The Ruins
- Toy Knife → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Worn Dagger → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Stick → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Equipment Tips
- Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Use Check on every new enemy before anything else. The flavour text points at the ACT option that will spare it, and it costs one turn you were going to spend dodging anyway.
- Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
