Wandering Sword is a pixel-art wuxia RPG from The Swordman Studio, published by Spiral Up Games and released on 14 September 2023. You play a young swordsman who nearly dies in a feud, then works his way through more than 75 locations across five regions of an ancient China setting. Combat runs on a tiled board that you can switch between turn-based and real-time, and character growth comes from Cultivation Methods feeding Meridian Points into a six-vessel Meridian Map.

These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.

Essential Tips

1. Put Martial Points into Cultivation Methods before individual moves

Put Martial Points into Cultivation Methods before individual moves. Cultivation levels are the only source of Meridian Points, and Meridian Points buy attribute gains and passive abilities across all six vessels, so they compound in a way a single upgraded move never does.

2. Only the first equipped external skill in each category is used actively in battle

Only the first equipped external skill in each category is used actively in battle. Everything else in that category contributes passive bonuses only, and players routinely fill every slot expecting all of them to fire.

3. Choose the Conception Vessel over the Yang path when you want raw damage

Choose the Conception Vessel over the Yang path when you want raw damage. Conception raises Strength, and Strength feeds both attack and CRIT, whereas the Yang route raises ATK alone.

4. Fight bosses and duels in turn-based mode and grind random encounters in real-time

Fight bosses and duels in turn-based mode and grind random encounters in real-time. Real-time is far quicker for accumulating Martial Points, and turn-based gives you the per-tile control that boss patterns actually demand.

5. Learn what shape your weapon hits before you commit to a build

Learn what shape your weapon hits before you commit to a build. Sword cuts a straight line, saber hits a column, polearm hits everything adjacent, fist is single-target and short-ranged, and hidden weapons reach across the board.

6. QiG is your action speed stat and it is capped at 1000, so there is a hard ceiling on how often a character acts

QiG is your action speed stat and it is capped at 1000, so there is a hard ceiling on how often a character acts. Once you approach it, further investment belongs in Strength, Constitution or Agility instead.

7. Recruit companions when you first meet them

Recruit companions when you first meet them. Up to 14 martial artists can join you, and many become permanently unavailable once the main story moves past their chapter, so exploring before advancing is the whole game.

8. Forge your own equipment rather than relying on drops

Forge your own equipment rather than relying on drops. Player-crafted gear is substantially stronger than what enemies leave behind, and forging materials are the main reason to keep returning to city hubs such as Pingkang City.

9. Sect rank promotions at Wudang close off the content attached to lower ranks permanently

Sect rank promotions at Wudang close off the content attached to lower ranks permanently. Before accepting a promotion, finish the quests and training available at your current rank, because the game does not warn you.

10. You can only join the Wudang Sect, which happens as part of the main story

You can only join the Wudang Sect, which happens as part of the main story. Shaolin, the Beggars' Sect and the Xuanhuo Cult cannot be joined, though the developers confirmed you can still learn martial arts from other sects.

Advanced Strategies

Build Optimization

The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.

For Wudang Sect (A-Tier):

  • Focus on Meridian Map combinations for maximum output.
  • Core gear: Sword
  • Stat priority: Offensive stats first

For Shaolin Monastery (A-Tier):

  • Versatile approach that handles any situation.
  • Core gear: Saber
  • Stat priority: Balanced stats

Mechanic Interactions

Understanding how Wandering Sword's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.

Meridian Map + Cultivation Methods and Martial Points: Six vessels, including the Conception Vessel and the Penetrating Vessel, each governing different stats. Combined with Cultivation Methods and Martial Points, cultivation methods are your internal arts, levelled with martial points earned in combat.

Tiled combat board + Turn-based and real-time switching: Every fight happens on a grid, and each weapon type strikes a different shape of it. When paired with Turn-based and real-time switching, you can flip between full turn-based control and real-time combat at will.

Wudang rank progression scaling: After joining Wudang as part of the main story you climb through Senior Disciple, Elite Disciple, Martial Disciple, Discipline Disciple and Zhenwu Hall Chief Disciple. Each promotion permanently closes the content tied to the rank below it.

Equipment Efficiency

EquipmentBest Use CaseWhy
SwordA first playthrough, and for players who want the path with the fewest gapsHits in a straight line with reliable reach and clean single-target pressure.
SaberGrouped encounters and players willing to spend a turn on positioning firstStrikes a column of tiles, which outperforms sword whenever enemies stack up in front of you and underperforms it when they scatter.
PolearmAmbushes and mob fights where you would otherwise be flankedHits every tile adjacent to the wielder, so it is the only type that improves when you are surrounded.
FistBoss duels, where the whole fight is one enemy and reach barely mattersUnarmed combat, single-target and short reach, built for one-on-one duels rather than crowd control.
Hidden WeaponFragile party members and any fight where the front line needs to hold a chokepointRanged attacks thrown from a safe distance, the only way to deal damage without putting a character on the front line.

Location Efficiency

Luo Village (Opening chapters): An early Central Plains settlement and the site of one of the first main story chapters, following the incident at the Valley of Dragons' Slumber. It is where the game teaches the tiled board before the difficulty arrives.

Mount Wudang (Early to late, revisited across the whole campaign): The Taoist sect in the south-western Central Plains and the only sect you actually join, as part of the main story. Members specialise in sword, fist and saber techniques, and the rank ladder here runs from Senior Disciple to Zhenwu Hall Chief Disciple.

Pingkang City (Early to mid game): One of the four major cities of the Central Plains and the setting for two separate main story chapters. City hubs like this are where forging, trading and the denser side quest content live.

Gusu City (Mid game): The Jiangnan city that hosts the Sword Appreciation Assembly and the Gusu Lantern Festival chapters. Timed story events here are a common source of permanently missed content for players who rush the main quest.

Mount Tianshan (Endgame): The far western mountain that hosts the final duel chapter of the main story. By the time you reach it, the encounters assume a fully developed Meridian Map and forged endgame gear.

Mistakes Even Veterans Make

  1. Rushing the main story and permanently losing several of the 14 recruitable companions.
  2. Filling every external skill slot expecting them all to activate, when only the first in each category does.
  3. Spending Martial Points on individual moves while Cultivation Methods stay low, starving your Meridian Points.
  4. Accepting a Wudang rank promotion before clearing the quests attached to the rank you are leaving.
  5. Picking a weapon type without checking its attack shape against the grid, then wondering why fights go badly.

Pro Quick Tips

  • Put Martial Points into Cultivation Methods before individual moves. Cultivation levels are the only source of Meridian Points, and Meridian Points buy attribute gains and passive abilities across all six vessels, so they compound in a way a single upgraded move never does.
  • Only the first equipped external skill in each category is used actively in battle. Everything else in that category contributes passive bonuses only, and players routinely fill every slot expecting all of them to fire.
  • Choose the Conception Vessel over the Yang path when you want raw damage. Conception raises Strength, and Strength feeds both attack and CRIT, whereas the Yang route raises ATK alone.
  • Start with Shaolin Monastery, switch to Wudang Sect when ready
  • Invest in Sword above everything else
  • Clear areas in order: Luo Village → Mount Wudang → Pingkang City → Gusu City → Mount Tianshan. See our maps guide
  • Meridian Map + Cultivation Methods and Martial Points together are stronger than either alone
