Wargaming's tank shooter has run since 2010 and reached Steam in April 2021, carrying more than 800 vehicles across ten tiers and eleven nations. Standard play is 15 versus 15, where penetration mechanics, view range and camouflage decide far more than raw aim. It is free to play, and the real price is the grind from tier 1 to tier 10.
Starting World of Tanks can feel overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly what to focus on during your first hours so you don't waste time on things that don't matter yet. For the full progression path, see our walkthrough.
What Kind of Game Is This?
World of Tanks is a action game built around Penetration and armour angling and View range and camouflage. The core loop involves mastering these systems to progress through increasingly challenging content.
What to expect: Time investment in learning mechanics, experimentation, and gradual mastery. The game rewards patience and knowledge.
Choosing Your First Role
| Role | Beginner Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Light tanks | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Medium tanks | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Heavy tanks | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Tank destroyers | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
| Self-propelled guns | Excellent for beginners | Balanced approach |
Our recommendation: Start with Medium tanks. It offers the most forgiving experience while teaching core mechanics.
Avoid Self-propelled guns as your first pick. It requires deep knowledge of game systems to use effectively. Once you're ready, check our classes guide for all options.
First Session Step-by-Step
Step 1: Learn Penetration and armour angling
A shell either penetrates or it does not, and effective armour climbs sharply with angle. Sidescraping behind a corner or sitting hull-down on a ridge can make a tank with 200mm of nominal plate effectively immune to guns that would punch straight through it flat on.
This is the foundation. Spend your first 15-30 minutes getting comfortable with how Penetration and armour angling works before worrying about anything else. Our combat guide breaks this down further.
Step 2: Head to Prokhorovka
A long open field split by a railway embankment, with a hill line on one side and a town edge on the other. Sniping and spotting decide it, and anything that drives into the field without support dies to crossfire.
Clear the main content here before moving on. Everything teaches fundamentals you'll need later. See our maps guide for all locations.
Step 3: Get Your First Upgrade
Look for APCR shells: it's the most accessible early upgrade. Higher penetration and much faster shell velocity, but it loses penetration over distance faster than AP and normalises less against slopes. It is the premium round on most mediums and lights.
Step 4: Understand View range and camouflage
Spotting is capped at 445 metres no matter how much view range you stack, and any enemy inside 50 metres is spotted regardless of camouflage. Camouflage value, movement, firing and bush cover decide who sees whom first, and seeing first usually decides the trade.
This is the system most new players overlook. Invest time here early. It pays off throughout the entire game.
Step 5: Push to Malinovka
Famous for the opening minute where half of both teams sit still in the field. The windmill hill and the church side are the real decision points, and the hill overlooks almost every sightline on the map.
Essential Mechanics Explained
Penetration and armour angling
A shell either penetrates or it does not, and effective armour climbs sharply with angle. Sidescraping behind a corner or sitting hull-down on a ridge can make a tank with 200mm of nominal plate effectively immune to guns that would punch straight through it flat on.
View range and camouflage
Spotting is capped at 445 metres no matter how much view range you stack, and any enemy inside 50 metres is spotted regardless of camouflage. Camouflage value, movement, firing and bush cover decide who sees whom first, and seeing first usually decides the trade.
Crew skills and perks
Crews train perks such as Repairs, Firefighting, Concealment and Brothers in Arms, plus role-specific options per crew member. Since Update 1.18.1 Sixth Sense is a free commander feature available from the first battle instead of a perk you have to grind toward.
Equipment and field modifications
Three equipment slots per tank hold items like the Gun Rammer, Vertical Stabiliser, Coated Optics or Turbocharger, and matching an item to its slot type grants a bonus. Field modifications add a per-vehicle upgrade tree that unlocks once the tank is fully researched.
Tier spread matchmaking
Battles are matched across up to two tiers, so a tier 8 tank regularly fights tier 10s. Bottom tier means spotting, flanking and shooting weak points rather than trading shots frontally, and most players lose credits by ignoring that.
Common Beginner Mistakes
1. Driving into the open on Prokhorovka or Malinovka in the first minute
Both maps punish early exposure with crossfire from positions you cannot see yet.
2. Firing while moving because the target looks close
Movement and turret traverse penalties are large, and a miss on a 12-second reload is a free hit for the enemy.
3. Loading a full magazine of premium ammunition at tier 8
The credit loss per battle outweighs the extra penetration in most matches.
4. Chasing a low-health enemy away from your team
You leave a flank open, and the tank you chased usually leads you into two more guns.
5. Spreading experience across unrelated tanks so no crew ever reaches a second or third perk
Crew quality compounds and is the cheapest performance gain available.
First 5 Hours Checklist
- Understand Penetration and armour angling and View range and camouflage
- Choose Medium tanks as starting role
- Clear Prokhorovka main content
- Acquire APCR shells or equivalent upgrade
- Reach Malinovka
- Effective armour rises with angle, so 120mm of plate at 45 degrees behaves like roughly 170mm. Sidescraping, where you back into a corner at a steep angle and expose only the front of your side, makes many mid-tier heavies unpennable to same-tier guns.
- Shells fired on the move land nowhere near the reticle. Come to a full stop, let the aiming circle shrink, then fire, because one fully aimed shot into a weak point beats three snapshots into a turret face.
Tips for New Players
- Effective armour rises with angle, so 120mm of plate at 45 degrees behaves like roughly 170mm. Sidescraping, where you back into a corner at a steep angle and expose only the front of your side, makes many mid-tier heavies unpennable to same-tier guns.
- Shells fired on the move land nowhere near the reticle. Come to a full stop, let the aiming circle shrink, then fire, because one fully aimed shot into a weak point beats three snapshots into a turret face.
- Spotting range is capped at 445 metres regardless of view range, and any enemy within 50 metres is spotted through bushes. Stacking optics past the cap is wasted, so spend the third slot on something that still does work.
- Sixth Sense has been free on every commander since Update 1.18.1, so put the remaining perk slots into Repairs, Concealment and Brothers in Arms. Repairs trained across the whole crew is what gets you moving again after a track hit.
- In bottom-tier games your job is spotting, flanking and finishing damaged tanks, not trading with tier 10 heavies. Most players lose their credit and experience efficiency in exactly these matches.
- Bushes only conceal you fully if you sit more than fifteen metres behind them, and firing strips that concealment for a few seconds. Fire, back off the bush line, then return rather than sitting in one spot all game.
- Premium ammunition costs several times more per shot. Carrying six to ten rounds for the shots you cannot otherwise make is sensible; firing a full load of it at every target turns a strong game into a credit loss.
- Learn each map's two or three genuinely good positions rather than the whole layout. Most battles resolve on the same handful of ridge lines and corners, and knowing where to stop is worth more than knowing where everything is.
- Track and module damage wins fights you cannot win on raw damage. Tracking a heavier tank and repositioning to its side beats trading frontally, and an ammo rack hit ends most engagements on the spot.
- Grind whole lines rather than buying scattered tanks. Crews retrain within a line at reduced cost, and a fully trained crew is worth more than an extra piece of equipment bolted onto a tank whose crew sits at 75 percent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is World of Tanks free to play?
Yes. Every tech tree vehicle is researchable with in-game experience and credits. Premium account, premium tanks and cosmetics are paid, and premium ammunition has been buyable with credits since 2013.
How many nations and vehicles are there?
Eleven nations, including the USSR, Germany, the USA, France, the UK, China, Japan, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Poland and Italy, with more than 800 vehicles spread across ten tiers.
Which tank class should a new player start with?
Mediums. They forgive mistakes because they can reposition out of trouble, they teach spotting and armour angling at the same time, and their lines end at some of the strongest tier 10 vehicles.
How is the Steam version different from the standalone client?
Gameplay and servers are identical. The difference is billing and the launcher. Wargaming supports linking a Steam account to an existing Wargaming account, so check the linking options before you start a fresh garage.
Do I need premium ammunition to compete?
Not generally, but you need it situationally. Carry a small number of premium rounds for tier 10 heavies and bottom-tier matches, and fire standard AP at everything you can already penetrate.
