Wargaming's tank shooter has run since 2010 and reached Steam in April 2021, carrying more than 800 vehicles across ten tiers and eleven nations. Standard play is 15 versus 15, where penetration mechanics, view range and camouflage decide far more than raw aim. It is free to play, and the real price is the grind from tier 1 to tier 10.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Effective armour rises with angle, so 120mm of plate at 45 degrees behaves like roughly 170mm
Effective armour rises with angle, so 120mm of plate at 45 degrees behaves like roughly 170mm. Sidescraping, where you back into a corner at a steep angle and expose only the front of your side, makes many mid-tier heavies unpennable to same-tier guns.
2. Shells fired on the move land nowhere near the reticle
Shells fired on the move land nowhere near the reticle. Come to a full stop, let the aiming circle shrink, then fire, because one fully aimed shot into a weak point beats three snapshots into a turret face.
3. Spotting range is capped at 445 metres regardless of view range, and any enemy within 50 metres is spotted through bushes
Spotting range is capped at 445 metres regardless of view range, and any enemy within 50 metres is spotted through bushes. Stacking optics past the cap is wasted, so spend the third slot on something that still does work.
4. Sixth Sense has been free on every commander since Update 1
Sixth Sense has been free on every commander since Update 1.18.1, so put the remaining perk slots into Repairs, Concealment and Brothers in Arms. Repairs trained across the whole crew is what gets you moving again after a track hit.
5. In bottom-tier games your job is spotting, flanking and finishing damaged tanks, not trading with tier 10 heavies
In bottom-tier games your job is spotting, flanking and finishing damaged tanks, not trading with tier 10 heavies. Most players lose their credit and experience efficiency in exactly these matches.
6. Bushes only conceal you fully if you sit more than fifteen metres behind them, and firing strips that concealment for a few seconds
Bushes only conceal you fully if you sit more than fifteen metres behind them, and firing strips that concealment for a few seconds. Fire, back off the bush line, then return rather than sitting in one spot all game.
7. Premium ammunition costs several times more per shot
Premium ammunition costs several times more per shot. Carrying six to ten rounds for the shots you cannot otherwise make is sensible; firing a full load of it at every target turns a strong game into a credit loss.
8. Learn each map's two or three genuinely good positions rather than the whole layout
Learn each map's two or three genuinely good positions rather than the whole layout. Most battles resolve on the same handful of ridge lines and corners, and knowing where to stop is worth more than knowing where everything is.
9. Track and module damage wins fights you cannot win on raw damage
Track and module damage wins fights you cannot win on raw damage. Tracking a heavier tank and repositioning to its side beats trading frontally, and an ammo rack hit ends most engagements on the spot.
10. Grind whole lines rather than buying scattered tanks
Grind whole lines rather than buying scattered tanks. Crews retrain within a line at reduced cost, and a fully trained crew is worth more than an extra piece of equipment bolted onto a tank whose crew sits at 75 percent.
Advanced Strategies
Role Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Light tanks (A-Tier):
- Focus on Penetration and armour angling combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: AP shells
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Medium tanks (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: APCR shells
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how World of Tanks's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Penetration and armour angling + View range and camouflage: A shell either penetrates or it does not, and effective armour climbs sharply with angle. Combined with View range and camouflage, spotting is capped at 445 metres no matter how much view range you stack, and any enemy inside 50 metres is spotted regardless of camouflage.
Crew skills and perks + Equipment and field modifications: Crews train perks such as Repairs, Firefighting, Concealment and Brothers in Arms, plus role-specific options per crew member. When paired with Equipment and field modifications, three equipment slots per tank hold items like the gun rammer, vertical stabiliser, coated optics or turbocharger, and matching an item to its slot type grants a bonus.
Tier spread matchmaking scaling: Battles are matched across up to two tiers, so a tier 8 tank regularly fights tier 10s. Bottom tier means spotting, flanking and shooting weak points rather than trading shots frontally, and most players lose credits by ignoring that.
Weapons Efficiency
| Weapon | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| AP shells | Same-tier and lower-tier targets, and any shot where your listed penetration comfortably clears the plate. | The default round on most guns, with normalisation against sloped plate and the three-calibre overmatch rule letting large guns punch through thin armour outright. |
| APCR shells | Close and medium range shots at heavy armour, and fast duels where shell travel time decides the hit. | Higher penetration and much faster shell velocity, but it loses penetration over distance faster than AP and normalises less against slopes. |
| HEAT shells | Flat heavy plate with no screens in front of it, such as a Maus upper front seen straight on. | Very high penetration with no distance falloff and no normalisation, but spaced armour, tracks and external modules stop it dead. |
| HE shells | Artillery, derp guns such as the KV-2's 152mm, open-topped tank destroyers and finishing a target on a sliver of health. | Explosive rounds that deal reduced damage without penetrating, reworked in Update 1. |
| Premium ammunition | Bottom-tier matches, tier 10 heavies, and the specific shots standard ammunition cannot make. | Every gun carries a premium round, buyable with credits rather than only real money since 2013. |
Location Efficiency
Prokhorovka (Tiers 6 to 10): A long open field split by a railway embankment, with a hill line on one side and a town edge on the other. Sniping and spotting decide it, and anything that drives into the field without support dies to crossfire.
Malinovka (Tiers 4 to 10): Famous for the opening minute where half of both teams sit still in the field. The windmill hill and the church side are the real decision points, and the hill overlooks almost every sightline on the map.
Himmelsdorf (Tiers 3 to 10): A dense German town with a castle hill on one flank and a rail yard on the other. It rewards heavy armour, corner sidescraping and short-range brawling, and it punishes turretless tank destroyers.
Mines (Tiers 3 to 10): A small map built around a central hill that overlooks nearly the whole battlefield. Whoever takes the hill in the first ninety seconds usually wins, which makes an early light tank rush decisive.
Lakeville (Tiers 4 to 10): Three lanes: a valley, a town and a narrow middle. The valley is a trap for slow tanks and the town is a heavy corridor, and teams that split evenly across all three tend to lose all three.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Driving into the open on Prokhorovka or Malinovka in the first minute. Both maps punish early exposure with crossfire from positions you cannot see yet.
- Firing while moving because the target looks close. Movement and turret traverse penalties are large, and a miss on a 12-second reload is a free hit for the enemy.
- Loading a full magazine of premium ammunition at tier 8. The credit loss per battle outweighs the extra penetration in most matches.
- Chasing a low-health enemy away from your team. You leave a flank open, and the tank you chased usually leads you into two more guns.
- Spreading experience across unrelated tanks so no crew ever reaches a second or third perk. Crew quality compounds and is the cheapest performance gain available.
Pro Quick Tips
- Effective armour rises with angle, so 120mm of plate at 45 degrees behaves like roughly 170mm. Sidescraping, where you back into a corner at a steep angle and expose only the front of your side, makes many mid-tier heavies unpennable to same-tier guns.

- Spotting range is capped at 445 metres regardless of view range, and any enemy within 50 metres is spotted through bushes. Stacking optics past the cap is wasted, so spend the third slot on something that still does work.
- Start with Medium tanks, switch to Light tanks when ready
- Invest in AP shells above everything else
- Clear areas in order: Prokhorovka → Malinovka → Himmelsdorf → Mines → Lakeville. See our maps guide
- Penetration and armour angling + View range and camouflage together are stronger than either alone
