Wargaming's tank shooter has run since 2010 and reached Steam in April 2021, carrying more than 800 vehicles across ten tiers and eleven nations. Standard play is 15 versus 15, where penetration mechanics, view range and camouflage decide far more than raw aim. It is free to play, and the real price is the grind from tier 1 to tier 10.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Light tanks
Light tanks is a top-performing option in World of Tanks.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | AP shells | The default round on most guns, with normalisation against sloped plate and the three-calibre overmatch rule letting large guns punch through thin armour outright. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Penetration and armour angling | A shell either penetrates or it does not, and effective armour climbs sharply with angle. |
How to Play Light tanks
Light tanks focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: AP shells does the damage and Penetration and armour angling keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Medium tanks
Medium tanks is a strong option in World of Tanks.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | APCR shells | Higher penetration and much faster shell velocity, but it loses penetration over distance faster than AP and normalises less against slopes. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | View range and camouflage | Spotting is capped at 445 metres no matter how much view range you stack, and any enemy inside 50 metres is spotted regardless of camouflage. |
How to Play Medium tanks
Medium tanks focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair APCR shells with View range and camouflage and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Heavy tanks
Heavy tanks is a strong option in World of Tanks.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|

| Key Mechanic | Crew skills and perks | Crews train perks such as Repairs, Firefighting, Concealment and Brothers in Arms, plus role-specific options per crew member. |
How to Play Heavy tanks
Heavy tanks focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Crew skills and perks covers the gap HEAT shells leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.

- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential

Build Progression Path
- Start with Medium tanks: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Light tanks once you understand core mechanics and have access to AP shells
- Keep a Heavy tanks setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Self-propelled guns for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Effective armour rises with angle, so 120mm of plate at 45 degrees behaves like roughly 170mm. Sidescraping, where you back into a corner at a steep angle and expose only the front of your side, makes many mid-tier heavies unpennable to same-tier guns.
- Shells fired on the move land nowhere near the reticle. Come to a full stop, let the aiming circle shrink, then fire, because one fully aimed shot into a weak point beats three snapshots into a turret face.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
