Wargaming's World of Warships fields several hundred warships from more than a dozen navies in 12 versus 12 random battles. Tiers run from I to X with superships such as Satsuma and Annapolis sitting above them, and five classes share every map: destroyers, cruisers, battleships, aircraft carriers and submarines. Shells take ten seconds or more to arrive at long range, so the skill sits in prediction and positioning rather than reflexes.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

A-Tier: Destroyer
Destroyer is a top-performing option in World of Warships.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Armor piercing shells | Fuse on impact with thick plate and detonate inside for citadel damage. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Concealment and spotting | You only see what someone on your team spots, and every ship has a surface detection range. |
How to Play Destroyer
Destroyer focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Armor piercing shells does the damage and Concealment and spotting keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Cruiser
Cruiser is a strong option in World of Warships.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | High explosive shells | Deal reliable chip damage regardless of angle and set fires, with penetration equal to one sixth of calibre for most nations and one quarter for German large calibre guns. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Angling and overmatch | Armour piercing shells bounce off steeply angled plate, so pointing your bow at a battleship saves you. |
How to Play Cruiser
Cruiser focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Pair High explosive shells with Angling and overmatch and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Battleship
Battleship is a strong option in World of Warships.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Torpedoes | Slow, invisible until they get close, and devastating in a stack. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Fires and flooding | High explosive shells set fires that burn damage through any armour, and torpedo hits cause flooding. |
How to Play Battleship
Battleship focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Fires and flooding covers the gap Torpedoes leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Aircraft carrier
Aircraft carrier is a specialized option in World of Warships.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Secondary batteries | Automatic short range guns that fire without input, most dangerous on German battleships such as Grosser Kurfürst where a dedicated build extends their range considerably. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Consumables | Damage Control Party, Repair Party, Smoke Generator, Hydroacoustic Search, Surveillance Radar and Defensive AA Fire all run on limited charges and timers. |
How to Play Aircraft carrier
Aircraft carrier focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: This one leans on Consumables rather than raw numbers, and Secondary batteries is what makes that trade pay off. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
A-Tier: Submarine
Submarine is a specialized option in World of Warships.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Weapon | Carrier squadrons | Rocket planes, dive bombers and torpedo bombers flown directly, one attack run at a time, with the rest of the squadron circling. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Capture points | Standard and domination battles award points for holding capture circles and for sinking ships, and most matches end on points rather than a wipe. |
How to Play Submarine
Submarine focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this role works: Carrier squadrons and Capture points pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. See our weapons guide for detailed weapons breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Straightforward gearing path
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Cruiser: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Destroyer once you understand core mechanics and have access to Armor piercing shells
- Keep a Battleship setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Submarine for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary weapon first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Angle matters more than armour thickness. Pointing your bow within about 30 degrees of an incoming battleship turns almost every armour piercing shell into a bounce, while showing full broadside at the same range gives up citadel hits worth a third of your health.
- Your guns give you away. Firing lights you up for 20 seconds after the last shell leaves the barrel, so a destroyer contesting a cap should decide in advance whether it wants to spot quietly or fight, because doing both gets it killed.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
