Wargaming's World of Warships fields several hundred warships from more than a dozen navies in 12 versus 12 random battles. Tiers run from I to X with superships such as Satsuma and Annapolis sitting above them, and five classes share every map: destroyers, cruisers, battleships, aircraft carriers and submarines. Shells take ten seconds or more to arrive at long range, so the skill sits in prediction and positioning rather than reflexes.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (Two Brothers)
A long map split by a central gap between two islands. The gap gives direct access to the enemy cap and either wins the match in three minutes or hands your team a very fast loss.
Level/Difficulty: Mid and high tier random battles Key Rewards: Fast cap contests, cross map torpedo lanes
What to Do in Two Brothers
- Learn Concealment and spotting. You only see what someone on your team spots, and every ship has a surface detection range. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Cruiser as your starting role. See our builds guide for why.
- Angle matters more than armour thickness. Pointing your bow within about 30 degrees of an incoming battleship turns almost every armour piercing shell into a bounce, while showing full broadside at the same range gives up citadel hits worth a third of your health.
- Acquire your first weapons upgrade: High explosive shells or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Concealment and spotting fundamentals
- Cruiser selected and functional
- Two Brothers main content cleared
- Ready for Ocean
Phase 2: Early Game (Ocean)
The only map in the game with no islands at all. Concealment and range decide everything, cruisers have nowhere to hide, and battleships that angle properly dominate.
Level/Difficulty: High tier random battles Key Rewards: Pure gunnery practice, long range dispersion learning
What to Do in Ocean
- Work on Angling and overmatch. Armour piercing shells bounce off steeply angled plate, so pointing your bow at a battleship saves you. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for High explosive shells if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Your guns give you away. Firing lights you up for 20 seconds after the last shell leaves the barrel, so a destroyer contesting a cap should decide in advance whether it wants to spot quietly or fight, because doing both gets it killed.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Fault Line.
- Consider whether Destroyer might suit your playstyle better than Cruiser.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Angling and overmatch integrated into gameplay
- High explosive shells acquired
- Ocean fully cleared
- Ready for Fault Line
Phase 3: Mid Game (Fault Line)
A balanced map where both teams fight for the west and east flanks and try to converge on the survivors. Games here are usually decided by which flank folds first.
Level/Difficulty: Mid and high tier random battles Key Rewards: Flank discipline, mid range cruiser positioning
What to Do in Fault Line
- Master Fires and flooding. High explosive shells set fires that burn damage through any armour, and torpedo hits cause flooding. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Armor piercing shells. It's the best weapon and becomes accessible around now.
- Overmatch is a simple division: shell calibre divided by 14.3 gives the armour thickness that ignores angle entirely. That is why 460 mm Yamato guns beat 32 mm bows and why a bow on tier VIII cruiser is not safe against tier X battleships.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Consumables for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Fires and flooding mastered
- Armor piercing shells acquired or in progress
- Fault Line fully cleared
- Ready for Hotspot
Phase 4: Late Game (Hotspot)
A South Pacific island chain with the fighting concentrated in the middle. Island cover suits high arc cruisers and punishes battleships that sail into the centre too early.
Level/Difficulty: Mid tier random battles Key Rewards: Island cover technique, close range brawls
What to Do in Hotspot
- Finalize your build. You should be running Destroyer or Cruiser with optimized gear.
- Armor piercing shells should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Hold Damage Control Party for flooding rather than the first fire. One fire costs a manageable amount of health over its burn, but two floods at once with the consumable on cooldown is how full health battleships die in under a minute.
- Capture points optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Sleeping Giant.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Armor piercing shells upgraded to max
- Hotspot fully cleared
- Ready for Sleeping Giant
Phase 5: Endgame (Sleeping Giant)
A cramped map full of islands and narrow channels where detection ranges are constantly broken by terrain. Destroyers and radar cruisers both thrive, battleships often struggle to find angles.
Level/Difficulty: High tier random battles Key Rewards: Radar and hydro practice, ambush torpedo angles
What to Do in Sleeping Giant
- Sleeping Giant tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Radar sees through smoke and around islands for its whole duration, so smoke is not cover against a Des Moines or a Petropavlovsk. Check the enemy team list before committing a destroyer to sitting in smoke inside a cap.
- The endgame loop: run Sleeping Giant, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Submarine for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Capture points mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Sleeping Giant fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Sailing broadside past an island at close range
- Using Damage Control on the first fire instead of saving it
- Firing high explosive at an angled bow with no fire chance left
- Yolo rushing a cap as a destroyer without checking for radar
- Chasing damage while both capture points go uncontested
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Angle matters more than armour thickness. Pointing your bow within about 30 degrees of an incoming battleship turns almost every armour piercing shell into a bounce, while showing full broadside at the same range gives up citadel hits worth a third of your health.
- Your guns give you away. Firing lights you up for 20 seconds after the last shell leaves the barrel, so a destroyer contesting a cap should decide in advance whether it wants to spot quietly or fight, because doing both gets it killed.

- Hold Damage Control Party for flooding rather than the first fire. One fire costs a manageable amount of health over its burn, but two floods at once with the consumable on cooldown is how full health battleships die in under a minute.
- Radar sees through smoke and around islands for its whole duration, so smoke is not cover against a Des Moines or a Petropavlovsk. Check the enemy team list before committing a destroyer to sitting in smoke inside a cap.
