Wargaming's World of Warships fields several hundred warships from more than a dozen navies in 12 versus 12 random battles. Tiers run from I to X with superships such as Satsuma and Annapolis sitting above them, and five classes share every map: destroyers, cruisers, battleships, aircraft carriers and submarines. Shells take ten seconds or more to arrive at long range, so the skill sits in prediction and positioning rather than reflexes.

World of Warships features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Two Brothers: Starting Area

A long map split by a central gap between two islands. The gap gives direct access to the enemy cap and either wins the match in three minutes or hands your team a very fast loss.

What to Do Here

Ocean: Early Game

The only map in the game with no islands at all. Concealment and range decide everything, cruisers have nowhere to hide, and battleships that angle properly dominate.

Key RewardsPure gunnery practice, long range dispersion learning
Recommended RoleCruiser
Key WeaponsHigh explosive shells

What to Do Here

  • Focus on mastering Angling and overmatch. It's critical from this point on.
  • Farm for High explosive shells if you don't have it yet.
  • Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
  • Prepare for the difficulty spike in Fault Line.

Fault Line: Mid Game

A balanced map where both teams fight for the west and east flanks and try to converge on the survivors. Games here are usually decided by which flank folds first.

Hotspot: Late Game

A South Pacific island chain with the fighting concentrated in the middle. Island cover suits high arc cruisers and punishes battleships that sail into the centre too early.

AttributeDetail
DifficultyMid tier random battles
Key RewardsIsland cover technique, close range brawls
Recommended RoleDestroyer
Key WeaponsArmor piercing shells

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • Armor piercing shells should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Capture points mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Sleeping Giant.

Sleeping Giant: Endgame

A cramped map full of islands and narrow channels where detection ranges are constantly broken by terrain. Destroyers and radar cruisers both thrive, battleships often struggle to find angles.

AttributeDetail
DifficultyHigh tier random battles
Key RewardsRadar and hydro practice, ambush torpedo angles
Recommended RoleDestroyer
Key WeaponsArmor piercing shells

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Submarine for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Two Brothers → Ocean → Fault Line → Hotspot → Sleeping Giant. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your weapons: Some areas favor different weapons types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
