Abiotic Factor is a survival crafting game set inside a massive underground research facility where a containment breach has released alien creatures. You play as a scientist trapped in the labs, crafting weapons and tools from office supplies and lab equipment to survive. The Half-Life meets Subnautica premise is executed with humor — your first weapons are staplers and fire extinguishers, and your base is built from office furniture barricades. Co-op for up to 6 players adds chaos to the already absurd premise. The game entered Early Access in 2024 and quickly gained popularity for its unique setting and creative crafting system.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. Follow this path to avoid common traps that stall most players.
Quick Progression Summary
| Phase | Area | Focus | Build | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Start | Office Floor | office survival basics | Engineer | 1-2 hours |
| 2. Early | Labs | science crafting mastery | Engineer | 3-5 hours |
| 3. Mid | Parking Garage | alien encounters + gear | Scientist or Engineer | 5-10 hours |
| 4. Late | Server Room | Build optimization | Scientist | 5-10 hours |
| 5. Endgame | Deep Labs | Min-max | Scientist or Custodian | Ongoing |
Phase 1: Getting Started — Office Floor
The starting area with cubicles, break rooms, and supply closets. Abundant basic resources (food, water, office supplies) but weak alien threats. This is where you establish your first base and learn mechanics.
Level/Difficulty: Starting zone Key Rewards: Basic supplies, starting crafting materials, safe base location
What to Do in Office Floor
- Learn office survival. The facility provides a unique survival context — instead of trees and rocks, you scavenge desks, computers, vending machines, and lab equipment. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Engineer as your starting build. It's the most forgiving option.
- Build a science station before anything else. Research unlocks exponentially better equipment — 30 minutes of research is worth more than an hour of scavenging.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade — Fire Extinguisher or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand office survival fundamentals
- Engineer selected and functional
- Office Floor main content cleared
- Ready for Labs
Phase 2: Early Game — Labs
The research wing containing science stations and specialized crafting components. More dangerous with escaped lab specimens. The chemistry lab, biology lab, and physics lab each contain unique crafting materials.
Level/Difficulty: Early-mid game Key Rewards: Science stations, lab materials, advanced crafting recipes
What to Do in Labs
- Work on science crafting. Crafting uses a research-based system where you study items at science stations to unlock recipes. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Fire Extinguisher if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Vending machines are your best early food source. They respawn on a timer. Mark vending machine locations on your map and create a collection route.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Parking Garage.
- Consider whether Scientist might suit your playstyle better than Engineer.
Phase 2 Checklist
- science crafting integrated into gameplay
- Fire Extinguisher acquired
- Labs fully cleared
- Ready for Parking Garage
Phase 3: Mid Game — Parking Garage
A large open area with vehicles that can be scavenged for metal and mechanical parts. The garage connects to the surface exit (blocked by heavy debris). Alien nests form here due to the open space.
Level/Difficulty: Mid game Key Rewards: Metal materials, vehicle parts, large-scale building components
What to Do in Parking Garage
- Master alien encounters. Various alien species escaped from containment, each with unique behaviors. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Staple Gun. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Tesla coils placed in corridors create automatic kill zones. Set up 3-4 in a row leading to your base entrance and aliens die before reaching you.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in base building for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- alien encounters mastered
- Staple Gun acquired or in progress
- Parking Garage fully cleared
- Ready for Server Room
Phase 4: Late Game — Server Room
A high-security area requiring IT specialist skills to access. Contains the facility's computer network which, when restored, provides camera access and automated defense controls. Cold environment due to server cooling.
Level/Difficulty: Mid-late game Key Rewards: Computer access, security camera network, automated defenses, electronic components
What to Do in Server Room
- Finalize your build. You should be running Scientist or Engineer with optimized gear.
- Staple Gun should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Noise attracts aliens. Crafting, building, and fighting all generate noise. Do noisy work in batches, then go quiet to let the area cool down.
- co-op research optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Deep Labs.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Staple Gun upgraded to max
- Server Room fully cleared
- Ready for Deep Labs
Phase 5: Endgame — Deep Labs
The lowest facility levels where the containment breach originated. The most dangerous area with the strongest alien types and environmental hazards (radiation, toxic spills). Contains the best equipment and crafting blueprints.
Level/Difficulty: Late game Key Rewards: Endgame blueprints, rare materials, story completion, best weapons/armor
What to Do in Deep Labs
- Deep Labs tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- The fire extinguisher isn't just a weapon — the fog cloud blocks alien line of sight, letting you retreat through a smokescreen.
- The endgame loop: run Deep Labs, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Custodian for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where co-op research mastery separates good players from great ones.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Deep Labs fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Exploring too far from your base without establishing a safe return route. Getting lost in the facility with low health and no supplies means death.
- Ignoring science stations to focus on combat. Better weapons come from research, not from scavenging. A researched chemical sprayer outperforms any found weapon.
- Fighting every alien instead of learning which ones can be avoided. Some aliens are territorial — walking around their area costs nothing. Walking through it costs ammo and health.
- Building your base in an indefensible location like an open lobby. Corridors with single entry points are the best base locations — only one direction to defend.
- In co-op, everyone exploring in different directions. The facility is dangerous and getting separated means no one can help when aliens attack.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Build a science station before anything else. Research unlocks exponentially better equipment — 30 minutes of research is worth more than an hour of scavenging.
- Vending machines are your best early food source. They respawn on a timer. Mark vending machine locations on your map and create a collection route.
- Tesla coils placed in corridors create automatic kill zones. Set up 3-4 in a row leading to your base entrance and aliens die before reaching you.
- Noise attracts aliens. Crafting, building, and fighting all generate noise. Do noisy work in batches, then go quiet to let the area cool down.
- The fire extinguisher isn't just a weapon — the fog cloud blocks alien line of sight, letting you retreat through a smokescreen.
