World's Edge, Forgotten Empires and Tantalus Media relaunched Age of Empires III on 15 October 2020 with 4K art, reworked multiplayer and two fresh civilisations, the Incas and the Swedes. The base game carries 16 civilisations and four paid packs take the roster to 22, adding the United States, Mexicans, Ethiopians, Hausa, Italians and Maltese. Steam sits at 84 percent positive across roughly 18,900 reviews, and a Baltic Powers pack is listed on the store as coming soon.

Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

Great Plains: Starting Area

Wide open North American grassland with heavy bison herds and very little forest, crossed by a Trade Route. Nothing blocks a cavalry charge here, so raids land far more often than on wooded maps.

What to Do Here

Deccan: Early Game

A large flat Asian map with generous resources spread across it, which is why it turns up constantly in Treaty games where both sides need forty minutes of uninterrupted income before anyone fires a shot.

What to Do Here

  • Focus on mastering Five age advancement. It's critical from this point on.
  • Farm for Skirmisher if you don't have it yet.
  • Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
  • Prepare for the difficulty spike in Texas.

Texas: Mid Game

Dry open terrain with mesas breaking up long sightlines and thin forest cover. Hunts are strong but wood runs short sooner than on eastern maps, so early wood cards pay off here.

Yucatan: Late Game

Thick Central American jungle where forest blocks sight and armies collide at short range before either side has formed up. Cavalry lose much of their edge because there is nowhere to run past a line.

What to Do Here

  • Full build optimization is expected by this point.
  • Musketeer should be your primary, fully upgraded.
  • Civilisation specific economies mastery starts mattering here.
  • Farm resources for the push into Carolina.

Carolina: Endgame

Wooded eastern seaboard map with a coastline, so a Dock and a fishing fleet turn into a real second economy rather than a novelty. Forested chokepoints make defensive play viable.

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Swedes for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order: Great Plains → Deccan → Texas → Yucatan → Carolina. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
  4. Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
