World's Edge, Forgotten Empires and Tantalus Media relaunched Age of Empires III on 15 October 2020 with 4K art, reworked multiplayer and two fresh civilisations, the Incas and the Swedes. The base game carries 16 civilisations and four paid packs take the roster to 22, adding the United States, Mexicans, Ethiopians, Hausa, Italians and Maltese. Steam sits at 84 percent positive across roughly 18,900 reviews, and a Baltic Powers pack is listed on the store as coming soon.

See our maps guide for detailed area breakdowns.
Phase 1: Getting Started (Great Plains)
Wide open North American grassland with heavy bison herds and very little forest, crossed by a Trade Route. Nothing blocks a cavalry charge here, so raids land far more often than on wooded maps.
Level/Difficulty: 1v1 ladder and team games Key Rewards: Bison hunts, Trade Route experience, open ground for cavalry raids
What to Do in Great Plains
- Learn Home City shipment decks. You assemble a deck of up to 25 cards before the match, and experience earned from fighting, gathering and building pays for shipments. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick French as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
- Deck construction beats micro at every level below expert. Build one deck per civilisation with a clear plan: economy cards for a boom, unit shipments for a rush, and never carry cards for an age you do not intend to reach.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Skirmisher or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Home City shipment decks fundamentals
- French selected and functional
- Great Plains main content cleared
- Ready for Deccan
Phase 2: Early Game (Deccan)
A large flat Asian map with generous resources spread across it, which is why it turns up constantly in Treaty games where both sides need forty minutes of uninterrupted income before anyone fires a shot.
Level/Difficulty: Treaty and team games Key Rewards: Dense resource cover, room for a fully walled base
What to Do in Deccan
- Work on Five age advancement. Matches run through Discovery, Colonial, Fortress, Industrial and Imperial. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Skirmisher if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Your Explorer should be moving from the first second of the match. Treasures near your base pay for the first Settler batch, and the Explorer can pull Guardian animals away from a crate and circle back to claim it without dying.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Texas.
- Consider whether British might suit your playstyle better than French.
Phase 2 Checklist
- Five age advancement integrated into gameplay
- Skirmisher acquired
- Deccan fully cleared
- Ready for Texas
Phase 3: Mid Game (Texas)
Dry open terrain with mesas breaking up long sightlines and thin forest cover. Hunts are strong but wood runs short sooner than on eastern maps, so early wood cards pay off here.
Level/Difficulty: 1v1 ladder Key Rewards: Strong hunts, open flanks that reward Hussar raids
What to Do in Texas
- Master Treasures and Explorer scouting. Treasure crates sit around the map behind Guardian animals or bandits, and only your Explorer or a hero unit can claim them. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Musketeer. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Town Center idle time is the single biggest gap between a 1200 rated player and a 1600 rated one. Bind the Town Center to a hotkey and check it every time you finish an action, not every time you remember.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Trade Routes and native alliances for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Treasures and Explorer scouting mastered
- Musketeer acquired or in progress
- Texas fully cleared
- Ready for Yucatan
Phase 4: Late Game (Yucatan)
Thick Central American jungle where forest blocks sight and armies collide at short range before either side has formed up. Cavalry lose much of their edge because there is nowhere to run past a line.
Level/Difficulty: 1v1 and 2v2 Key Rewards: Abundant wood, close quarters infantry fights
What to Do in Yucatan
- Finalize your build. You should be running British or French with optimized gear.
- Musketeer should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Age up with the Politician that matches your plan rather than the one with the biggest number. A Politician that ships Settlers is worth more in a boom than one that ships soldiers you will not use for four minutes.
- Civilisation specific economies optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Carolina.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Musketeer upgraded to max
- Yucatan fully cleared
- Ready for Carolina
Phase 5: Endgame (Carolina)
Wooded eastern seaboard map with a coastline, so a Dock and a fishing fleet turn into a real second economy rather than a novelty. Forested chokepoints make defensive play viable.
Level/Difficulty: Team games and water play Key Rewards: Fish and whales, forested chokepoints for defence
What to Do in Carolina
- Carolina tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Trading Posts pay back their wood in about three convoys, so build them the moment you can spare 100 wood rather than saving for military. Experience from the Trade Route is what funds your Fortress age shipments.
- The endgame loop: run Carolina, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Swedes for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where Civilisation specific economies mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Carolina fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Leaving Settlers on food when you already have 400 banked and no plan to spend it, instead of moving them to the wood or coin your next shipment requires.
- Building a single deck and reusing it for every civilisation, which wastes card slots on shipments your current civilisation cannot benefit from.
- Massing one unit type. A pile of Musketeers with nothing else in it loses to half its number of Skirmishers backed by a single Falconet.
- Ignoring the Trade Route for the first ten minutes and then wondering why the opponent has two more shipments than you do.
- Walling in on an open map like Great Plains. Walls cost wood you need for Manor Houses or Torps and they do not stop a Hussar raid on an outer gold mine.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Deck construction beats micro at every level below expert. Build one deck per civilisation with a clear plan: economy cards for a boom, unit shipments for a rush, and never carry cards for an age you do not intend to reach.
- Your Explorer should be moving from the first second of the match. Treasures near your base pay for the first Settler batch, and the Explorer can pull Guardian animals away from a crate and circle back to claim it without dying.
- Town Center idle time is the single biggest gap between a 1200 rated player and a 1600 rated one. Bind the Town Center to a hotkey and check it every time you finish an action, not every time you remember.
- Age up with the Politician that matches your plan rather than the one with the biggest number. A Politician that ships Settlers is worth more in a boom than one that ships soldiers you will not use for four minutes.
- Trading Posts pay back their wood in about three convoys, so build them the moment you can spare 100 wood rather than saving for military. Experience from the Trade Route is what funds your Fortress age shipments.
