InnerSloth released Among Us in 2018 to almost no attention, then watched streamers turn it into the biggest game of 2020. Up to 15 players work a spaceship or base while one to three Impostors kill and sabotage, and every dispute gets settled in a voting meeting. Five maps, a role system added in 2021 and a separate Hide n Seek mode have kept it alive since.
Picking the right build determines how your experience plays out. These builds are ranked by overall effectiveness, factoring in damage, survivability, gear requirements, and how well they scale into endgame. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.
Quick Rankings
| Build | Tier | Playstyle | Core Gear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crewmate | A | Balanced | Best available |
| Impostor | A | Balanced | Best available |
| Engineer | A | Vent only when nobody is watching and only to reach a task faster. Claim the role at the very first meeting if you were seen, because nobody believes it later. | Vent network, task list |
| Scientist | A | Check vitals at intervals rather than draining the battery, then call a meeting with the exact moment a heart stopped and who was nearby. | Portable vitals, task list |
| Shapeshifter | S | Shift, get seen doing something incriminating, then revert somewhere private. A shift seen ending is worse evidence against you than a vent. | Shapeshift ability, kill button, vents |

A-Tier: Crewmate
Crewmate is a top-performing option in Among Us.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Kill | The Impostor's only direct action, gated by a host-set cooldown that usually runs between 10 and 45 seconds. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Tasks and the task bar | Crewmates win by finishing every assigned task, tracked on a shared bar. |
How to Play Crewmate
Crewmate focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Kill does the damage and Tasks and the task bar keeps it running, which is why this sits at the top of the list. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Highest overall performance
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Popular pick, resources may be contested
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Impostor
Impostor is a strong option in Among Us.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Vent travel | Vents move Impostors and Engineers between fixed points on each map. |
| Core Gear | Best available for your level | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Balanced offensive and defensive stats | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Sabotage timers | Reactor Meltdown and Oxygen Depletion put a hard countdown on the crew and force two players to opposite ends of the map. |
How to Play Impostor
Impostor focuses on a balanced approach to content.
Why this build works: Pair Vent travel with Sabotage timers and the build stops depending on a good start, so it holds up across most content. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Most versatile option
- Straightforward gearing path
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Lower peak damage than S-tier
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Engineer
A Crewmate who can use vents, which is either a large mobility edge or an instant ejection if anyone sees it. A cooldown limits how often you can travel that way.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Lights sabotage | Cuts crewmate vision down to a small circle while Impostor vision stays full. |
| Core Gear | Vent network, task list | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Task speed and map coverage | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Vents and kill cooldown | Only Impostors and Engineers can use vents, and being seen entering or leaving one is the most damning evidence in the game. |
How to Play Engineer
Vent only when nobody is watching and only to reach a task faster. Claim the role at the very first meeting if you were seen, because nobody believes it later.
A Crewmate who can use vents, which is either a large mobility edge or an instant ejection if anyone sees it. A cooldown limits how often you can travel that way.
Why this build works: Vents and kill cooldown covers the gap Lights sabotage leaves open, so the build stays usable even when a fight goes badly. Core gear like Vent network, task list pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Best survivability
- Clear stat priority (Task speed and map coverage) makes gearing straightforward
- Works in all content types
Cons:
- Slower clear speeds
- Needs specific gear to reach full potential
A-Tier: Scientist
Carries a portable vitals reader powered by a battery that recharges as you complete tasks. Live vitals are the strongest crew information available because they timestamp a death.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Reactor and Oxygen sabotage | Timed sabotages that end the game if unfixed, and both require two players at separate panels. |
| Core Gear | Portable vitals, task list | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Task completion to keep the battery charged | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Meetings and voting | Bodies can be reported and the emergency button called, and either freezes play for discussion. |
How to Play Scientist
Check vitals at intervals rather than draining the battery, then call a meeting with the exact moment a heart stopped and who was nearby.
Carries a portable vitals reader powered by a battery that recharges as you complete tasks. Live vitals are the strongest crew information available because they timestamp a death.
Why this build works: This one leans on Meetings and voting rather than raw numbers, and Reactor and Oxygen sabotage is what makes that trade pay off. Core gear like Portable vitals, task list pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Strong in group/team content
- Clear stat priority (Task completion to keep the battery charged) makes gearing straightforward
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- Weaker solo performance
- Requires deep game knowledge
S-Tier: Shapeshifter
An Impostor who takes another player's appearance for a limited time and leaves visible evidence when the shift ends. Framing works, but only if the person you copy has no witness of their own.
Core Setup
| Slot | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Equipment | Comms sabotage | Disables Admin, cameras and vitals and hides the task bar, and on MIRA HQ it scrambles the task list itself. |
| Core Gear | Shapeshift ability, kill button, vents | Maximizes build potential |
| Stat Priority | Timing over frequency | Optimal scaling |
| Key Mechanic | Roles | The 2021 roles update added the Scientist with a portable vitals reader and the Engineer who can vent, the Guardian Angel for ghosts, and the Shapeshifter for Impostors. |
How to Play Shapeshifter
Shift, get seen doing something incriminating, then revert somewhere private. A shift seen ending is worse evidence against you than a vent.
An Impostor who takes another player's appearance for a limited time and leaves visible evidence when the shift ends. Framing works, but only if the person you copy has no witness of their own.
Why this build works: Comms sabotage and Roles pull in the same direction here, which separates this from the safer picks above. Core gear like Shapeshift ability, kill button, vents pushes it further. See our weapons guide for detailed equipment breakdowns.
Pros:
- Unique, rewarding playstyle
- Clear stat priority (Timing over frequency) makes gearing straightforward
- Excels in its niche
Cons:
- High skill floor, punishing when misplayed
- Requires deep game knowledge
Build Progression Path
- Start with Impostor: the most forgiving option for learning the game
- Transition to Crewmate once you understand core mechanics and have access to Kill
- Keep a Engineer setup for content that keeps killing you
- Try Shapeshifter for a fresh experience once you've mastered the basics
Follow our walkthrough for the optimal progression path through each area.
Gearing Tips
- Invest in your primary equipment first, since it gives the biggest power spike. See our weapons guide for rankings.
- Work tasks in the open and near other players. Being seen performing a real task animation is the only alibi in the game that does not depend on somebody choosing to believe you.
- Visual tasks are hard proof if the host left them enabled. Medbay Scan, Empty Garbage on The Skeld, Clear Asteroids and Submit Scan on Polus all show an animation others can watch, so do them with a witness present.
- Don't spread upgrade resources across multiple builds until endgame
