InnerSloth released Among Us in 2018 to almost no attention, then watched streamers turn it into the biggest game of 2020. Up to 15 players work a spaceship or base while one to three Impostors kill and sabotage, and every dispute gets settled in a voting meeting. Five maps, a role system added in 2021 and a separate Hide n Seek mode have kept it alive since.
These tips go beyond the basics. They're the strategies experienced players use to play more efficiently, the hidden mechanics most people miss, and the optimizations that compound over a full playthrough. If you're just starting, check our beginner's guide first.
Essential Tips
1. Work tasks in the open and near other players
Work tasks in the open and near other players. Being seen performing a real task animation is the only alibi in the game that does not depend on somebody choosing to believe you.
2. Visual tasks are hard proof if the host left them enabled
Visual tasks are hard proof if the host left them enabled. Medbay Scan, Empty Garbage on The Skeld, Clear Asteroids and Submit Scan on Polus all show an animation others can watch, so do them with a witness present.
3. The task bar setting decides your entire strategy
The task bar setting decides your entire strategy. If it only updates in meetings, the jump between one meeting and the next tells you exactly how many real tasks were completed, which narrows the Impostor count quickly.
4. As Impostor, sabotage far more often than you kill
As Impostor, sabotage far more often than you kill. A well-timed Lights or Comms creates the isolation you need, and a crew fixing Reactor is a crew not watching you.
5. Report bodies immediately instead of standing near them
Report bodies immediately instead of standing near them. Self-reporting is a real strategy, but a delayed report is the most common way an innocent player gets ejected.
6. Give timelines rather than accusations
Give timelines rather than accusations. Saying you went Weapons, then Navigation, then Shields lets other people confirm or break your story, while calling somebody suspicious with no route attached gives the group nothing to work with.
7. Track the kill cooldown mentally
Track the kill cooldown mentally. If two bodies turn up thirty seconds apart and the host set a 45-second cooldown, there are at least two Impostors, and that single deduction reshapes the vote.
8. On Polus and The Airship, distance is the Impostor's best weapon
On Polus and The Airship, distance is the Impostor's best weapon. Bodies in Specimen Room, the Vault or the Brig can sit undiscovered for two full minutes, so sweep remote rooms in pairs.
9. As Engineer, treat venting as a last resort
As Engineer, treat venting as a last resort. The role is a genuine advantage, but one sighting means the crew ejects you and the actual Impostor walks free with a spare vote.
10. Skip the vote when nobody has real evidence
Skip the vote when nobody has real evidence. Ejecting an innocent crewmate hands the Impostors a free numbers advantage, and a random ejection almost never buys information worth a body.
Advanced Strategies
Build Optimization
The difference between an average build and an optimized one is massive. See our builds guide for full breakdowns.
For Crewmate (A-Tier):
- Focus on Tasks and the task bar combinations for maximum output.
- Core gear: Kill
- Stat priority: Offensive stats first
For Impostor (A-Tier):
- Versatile approach that handles any situation.
- Core gear: Vent travel
- Stat priority: Balanced stats
Mechanic Interactions
Understanding how Among Us's systems interact is where the real optimization lives. Our combat guide covers this in detail.
Tasks and the task bar + Sabotage timers: Crewmates win by finishing every assigned task, tracked on a shared bar. Combined with Sabotage timers, reactor meltdown and oxygen depletion put a hard countdown on the crew and force two players to opposite ends of the map.
Vents and kill cooldown + Meetings and voting: Only Impostors and Engineers can use vents, and being seen entering or leaving one is the most damning evidence in the game. When paired with Meetings and voting, bodies can be reported and the emergency button called, and either freezes play for discussion.
Roles scaling: The 2021 roles update added the Scientist with a portable vitals reader and the Engineer who can vent, the Guardian Angel for ghosts, and the Shapeshifter for Impostors. The 2023 Fungle update added Tracker and Noisemaker for the crew and Phantom for Impostors, each set as a percentage chance per lobby.
Equipment Efficiency
| Equipment | Best Use Case | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kill | Isolated targets in rooms with no camera coverage and little foot traffic, such as Lower Engine on The Skeld or Specimen Room on Polus. | The Impostor's only direct action, gated by a host-set cooldown that usually runs between 10 and 45 seconds. |
| Vent travel | Escaping a kill room and repositioning far from the body before anyone reports it. | Vents move Impostors and Engineers between fixed points on each map. |
| Lights sabotage | Setting up kills in open areas such as Cafeteria or the Airship's Main Hall, where visibility is normally far too good. | Cuts crewmate vision down to a small circle while Impostor vision stays full. |
| Reactor and Oxygen sabotage | Splitting a group that has clumped together, and stalling a meeting that was about to eject you. | Timed sabotages that end the game if unfixed, and both require two players at separate panels. |
| Comms sabotage | Long games where the crew has been winning arguments using camera and Admin data. | Disables Admin, cameras and vitals and hides the task bar, and on MIRA HQ it scrambles the task list itself. |
Location Efficiency
The Skeld (4 to 10 players): The original spaceship and the smallest of the five maps. Electrical is the classic kill room because it sits off the main loop and connects to a vent, and Security cameras cover four corridors.
MIRA HQ (5 to 10 players): A single-floor building with no cameras and no vitals, replaced by a Doorlog at Communications that records who passed through. Its vent network is the most connected in the game, reaching nearly every room.
Polus (7 to 15 players): A large outdoor base where walking between rooms takes real time and bodies go undiscovered for minutes. It has Vitals, exterior cameras and a Seismic Stabilizers sabotage in place of Reactor.
The Airship (8 to 15 players): The biggest map, with ladders, moving platforms and a spawn where every player picks a starting room. Its size makes proving anything hard, and the Vault and Records corridors are near-guaranteed kill spots.
The Fungle (6 to 15 players): The 2023 island map, covered in fungus, with no Admin table and the Mushroom Mixup sabotage that briefly makes everyone look like a random crewmate. Impostors who plan around the confusion after a mixup do very well here.
Mistakes Even Veterans Make
- Faking a task in front of someone who has the same task and knows its length. Wiring in Electrical and Download in Communications are the two most commonly caught fakes.
- Walking alone into Electrical, Reactor or the Vault. Every map has two or three rooms that exist purely to get people killed away from witnesses.
- Calling an emergency meeting with nothing to say. It burns one of the few button uses the lobby has and puts suspicion straight onto you.
- Standing over a body while deciding whether to report. Anyone who walks in reads that as a kill in progress, and the vote is over before you finish typing.
- As Impostor, killing at the first available cooldown every single time. Predictable timing gets you counted, while a slower game gives you far more room to argue.
Pro Quick Tips
- Work tasks in the open and near other players. Being seen performing a real task animation is the only alibi in the game that does not depend on somebody choosing to believe you.
- Visual tasks are hard proof if the host left them enabled. Medbay Scan, Empty Garbage on The Skeld, Clear Asteroids and Submit Scan on Polus all show an animation others can watch, so do them with a witness present.
- The task bar setting decides your entire strategy. If it only updates in meetings, the jump between one meeting and the next tells you exactly how many real tasks were completed, which narrows the Impostor count quickly.
- Start with Impostor, switch to Crewmate when ready
- Invest in Kill above everything else
- Clear areas in order: The Skeld → MIRA HQ → Polus → The Airship → The Fungle. See our maps guide
- Tasks and the task bar + Sabotage timers together are stronger than either alone
