Orteil's Cookie Clicker began as a browser toy in 2013 and arrived on Steam in September 2021 with a soundtrack by C418. You click a cookie, buy 20 building types from Cursor up to You that click it for you, then reset everything and do it again faster. The interesting part of the game is not the clicking, it is deciding when to throw a run away.
Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.

Equipment Progression Path
The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear Garden
- Heavenly Chip Secret → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Get Lucky → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Kitten upgrades → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Equipment Tips
- Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Buy the building with the best payback time rather than the newest unlocked one. Divide the price by the CpS it adds, compare across all 20 buildings, and buy whichever number is smallest. Late buildings are usually terrible value for the first few purchases.
- Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
