Dark Souls III Maps & Locations Guide — Every Area Covered

Complete Dark Souls III maps and locations guide. Every area with difficulty, rewards, progression order, and what to do in each zone.

Dark Souls III is the culmination of FromSoftware's dark fantasy trilogy, combining the interconnected world design of the original with the faster, more aggressive combat of Bloodborne. The game features 19 main bosses and 6 DLC bosses, several of which rank among the best encounters in the Soulsborne catalog — the Nameless King, Sister Friede, and Slave Knight Gael are legendary fights. The build variety is enormous with over 200 weapons, dozens of spells across four magic schools, and an infusion system that tailors weapons to any stat spread. The Ringed City DLC provides the definitive conclusion to the entire Dark Souls saga.

Dark Souls III features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order — what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.

  • Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
  • Clear all main content before moving to Farron Keep.
  • If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.

Farron Keep — Early Game

A dreaded poison swamp area requiring you to extinguish three flames to open the boss door. Movement is slowed in the swamp. Contains the Farron Coal (lets Andre do Poison/Bleed infusions) and Sage's Coal. The Abyss Watchers boss is one of the most cinematic fights with a phase transition.

Irithyll — Mid Game

A stunning moonlit city area with the Pontiff Sulyvahn boss — widely considered the first major skill check. The Irithyll Dungeon below contains Profaned Capital. The area is large with multiple shortcuts and hidden items. Pontiff's aggressive combos require precise rolling.

Archdragon Peak — Late Game

An optional area accessed by using the Path of the Dragon gesture near a dragon corpse in Irithyll Dungeon. Contains the Nameless King — arguably the hardest boss in the base game. Phase 1 is on dragonback, phase 2 is a relentless melee fight with delayed attacks that punish panic rolling.

Ringed City — Endgame

The final DLC area and conclusion of the Dark Souls saga. Contains Slave Knight Gael — a three-phase boss fight considered the best in the series. Also includes Darkeater Midir (an enormous dragon boss), Halflight, and the Ringed Knight set. The Ringed City is the most difficult area in the game.

What to Do Here

  • This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
  • See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
  • The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
  • Experiment with Cleric for variety once you've mastered the meta.

Exploration Tips

  1. Clear areas in order — High Wall of Lothric → Farron Keep → Irithyll → Archdragon Peak → Ringed City. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
  2. Check every corner — Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
  3. Match your equipment — Some areas favor different equipment types.
  4. Read the walkthrough — Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
  5. Don't rush — Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
