Equipment Analysis

Bleed damage over time: One of three damage over time types. Bleed ticks at the start of a target's turn and stacks, so it rewards putting it on something that will live several rounds.

Blight damage over time: The Plague Doctor and the Venomdrop Grave Robber both specialise in it, and it is the easiest damage over time to apply across an entire enemy line at once.

Burn damage over time: The third damage over time type, carried mostly by fire based skills and certain items. Many enemies that resist Bleed and Blight do not resist Burn.

Combo tokens: A Combo token on an enemy makes the next qualifying skill hit substantially harder. Applying and then consuming Combo in the correct order across two heroes is one of the core damage patterns in the game.

Riposte tokens: Riposte makes a hero counterattack when struck. The Rogue path Highwayman leans on it heavily, and it turns enemy aggression into free damage.

Meta Analysis

The current meta in Darkest Dungeon II centers on The Stagecoach and road travel and Relationships between the four heroes. Builds that leverage both systems outperform those that focus on only one. Our combat guide explains these interactions in depth.

What's strong right now:

  • Man-at-Arms with Bleed damage over time is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it.
  • Combat tokens instead of flat percentages builds are gaining ground as players find new combinations.
  • Grave Robber remains essential for learning hard content. See the boss guide.

What's underrated:

  • Plague Doctor is consistently overlooked despite being the most flexible option.
  • Burn damage over time offers excellent performance for its investment level.

What's overhyped:

  • Pure Vestal builds. High ceiling but the consistency isn't there for most players.
