Darkest Dungeon II is not the 2016 game with better art, and readers who expect the Hamlet will be lost inside ten minutes. Red Hook released it on Steam on 8 May 2023, and it throws out estate management, town building, hero recruitment queues and dungeon crawling in favour of a run-based road trip: four heroes, one stagecoach, one road to the Mountain, and either you finish the Confession or the run ends. Progress between runs lives entirely in the Altar of Hope rather than in a town you rebuild.
Your choice of equipment defines your damage output and playstyle. This guide ranks every major option, explains what makes each one strong, and tells you which builds they pair best with.
Equipment Rankings
| Equipment | Tier | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bleed damage over time | S | Large single targets, lair bosses and Confession bosses with high health pools | One of three damage over time types. |
| Blight damage over time | A | Wide enemy formations where spreading damage beats focusing it | The Plague Doctor and the Venomdrop Grave Robber both specialise in it, and it is the easiest damage over time to apply across an entire enemy line at once. |
| Burn damage over time | A | Enemy types that shrug off the other two damage over time effects | The third damage over time type, carried mostly by fire based skills and certain items. |
| Combo tokens | B | Focusing down a dangerous enemy in a single round before it acts | A Combo token on an enemy makes the next qualifying skill hit substantially harder. |
| Riposte tokens | B | Fights against many weak attackers rather than a single heavy hitter | Riposte makes a hero counterattack when struck. |
S-Tier: Bleed damage over time
One of three damage over time types. Bleed ticks at the start of a target's turn and stacks, so it rewards putting it on something that will live several rounds.

Equipment Progression Path
The order you should acquire equipment as you progress:
- Starting gear → Enough to clear The Valley
- Blight damage over time → Your first real upgrade, available early
- Burn damage over time → Mid-game upgrade with good scaling
- Bleed damage over time → Best-in-slot, aim for this by late game
- Upgrade to max → The power spike from max upgrades is enormous
Equipment Tips
- Always upgrade your primary equipment before diversifying. One strong option beats three mediocre ones.
- Match your equipment to your build's stat priorities for maximum scaling.
- Do not read first game guides for this one. There is no Hamlet, no estate, no roster of twenty five heroes, no stress relief buildings and no week counter. Everything you knew about provisioning and torch management applies to a different game.
- Check our tier list for how equipment rankings affect overall build effectiveness.
