Darkest Dungeon II is not the 2016 game with better art, and readers who expect the Hamlet will be lost inside ten minutes. Red Hook released it on Steam on 8 May 2023, and it throws out estate management, town building, hero recruitment queues and dungeon crawling in favour of a run-based road trip: four heroes, one stagecoach, one road to the Mountain, and either you finish the Confession or the run ends. Progress between runs lives entirely in the Altar of Hope rather than in a town you rebuild.
Darkest Dungeon II features distinct areas with increasing difficulty. This guide covers every major location in progression order: what to do, what to get, and when to move on. For the step-by-step path, see our walkthrough.
Area Progression Order
| Order | Location | Difficulty | Key Rewards | Recommended Build |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Valley | Always region one of any run | Starting relics, early trinkets and a safe window to test a new party composition | Plague Doctor |
| 2 | The Foetor | Region two or three of a Confession run | Harvest Child lair trophy, Blight themed trinkets and relics | Plague Doctor |
| 3 | The Tangle | Region two or three of a Confession run | Dreaming General lair trophy, plus the boss trophy required to reach the Mountain in Acts two onward | Man-at-Arms |
| 4 | The Sprawl | Region two or three of a Confession run | Librarian lair trophy, Burn themed items and relics | Man-at-Arms |
| 5 | The Shroud | Region two or three of a Confession run | Leviathan lair trophy and Shroud specific trinkets | Man-at-Arms |
The Valley: Starting Area
The opening region of every run, used as a tutorial stretch. It is deliberately gentle and holds no lair boss, so treat it as the place to establish relationships rather than to hoard resources.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Always region one of any run |
| Key Rewards | Starting relics, early trinkets and a safe window to test a new party composition |
| Recommended Build | Plague Doctor |
| Key Equipment | Blight damage over time |
What to Do Here
- Learn the basics of The Stagecoach and road travel. This is where you practice without heavy punishment.
- Collect starting resources and your first equipment upgrade.
- Clear all main content before moving to The Foetor.
- If you're struggling, read our beginner's guide.
The Foetor: Early Game
The rot and plague region. Its lair holds the Harvest Child, and enemy composition here punishes parties with no way to clear damage over time or heal between fights.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Region two or three of a Confession run |
| Key Rewards | Harvest Child lair trophy, Blight themed trinkets and relics |
| Recommended Build | Plague Doctor |
| Key Equipment | Blight damage over time |
What to Do Here
- Focus on mastering Relationships between the four heroes. It's critical from this point on.
- Farm for Blight damage over time if you don't have it yet.
- Complete all objectives for maximum rewards.
- Prepare for the difficulty spike in The Tangle.
The Tangle: Mid Game
The overgrown, corrupted region whose lair belongs to the Dreaming General. Enemies here favour heavy single hits over swarms.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Region two or three of a Confession run |
| Key Rewards | Dreaming General lair trophy, plus the boss trophy required to reach the Mountain in Acts two onward |
| Recommended Build | Man-at-Arms |
| Key Equipment | Blight damage over time |
What to Do Here
- This is the main skill check. Bring an optimized build.
- Bleed damage over time becomes accessible here. Prioritize getting it.
- Master Combat tokens instead of flat percentages for the boss encounters.
- Check our boss guide if you get stuck.
The Sprawl: Late Game
The burnt industrial region, home to the Librarian. Fights here often mix ranged attackers with back rank support that must be reached.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Region two or three of a Confession run |
| Key Rewards | Librarian lair trophy, Burn themed items and relics |
| Recommended Build | Man-at-Arms |
| Key Equipment | Bleed damage over time |
What to Do Here
- Full build optimization is expected by this point.
- Bleed damage over time should be your primary, fully upgraded.
- Candles of Hope and the Altar of Hope mastery starts mattering here.
- Farm resources for the push into The Shroud.
The Shroud: Endgame
The drowned coastal region whose lair holds the Leviathan. Note that the Sluice, the other water themed region, has no lair and therefore no lair boss at all.
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Region two or three of a Confession run |
| Key Rewards | Leviathan lair trophy and Shroud specific trinkets |
| Recommended Build | Man-at-Arms |
| Key Equipment | Bleed damage over time |
What to Do Here
- This is endgame. Best-in-slot gear and a perfected build are mandatory.
- See our boss guide for endgame fight strategies.
- The reward loop: clear content → upgrade → push harder content.
- Experiment with Vestal for variety once you've mastered the meta.
Exploration Tips
- Clear areas in order: The Valley → The Foetor → The Tangle → The Sprawl → The Shroud. Skipping areas means missing resources you'll need later.
- Check every corner: Hidden caches and secrets are often in non-obvious locations.
- Match your equipment: Some areas favor different equipment types.
- Read the walkthrough: Our walkthrough provides exact progression milestones for each area.
- Don't rush: Clearing an area fully gives more resources than speedrunning two areas.
