Diablo IV returns to a grim Sanctuary where Lilith stirs old horror across a shared open world. You pick one of five classes, chase loot through dungeons and seasonal events, then funnel power into Paragon boards that push your build into the endgame. Seasons reset progress but add fresh mechanics every few months.
This walkthrough takes you from your first session to endgame content. Each phase has specific goals, priorities, and milestones. New to the game? Start with our beginner's guide first.

Phase 1: Getting Started (Kyovashad)
The central hub city where you find the Blacksmith, Jeweler, Occultist, and stash early on.
Level/Difficulty: 1-50 Key Rewards: Crafting access, Wardrobe, vendor refresh
What to Do in Kyovashad
- Learn Paragon boards. After level 50 you earn Paragon points that slot into a grid of boards, each studded with stat nodes, rare glyph sockets, and legendary tiles. Spend your first session getting comfortable with this.
- Pick Sorcerer as your starting build. See our builds guide for why.
- Extract a powerful Aspect from any drop and imprint it onto better gear, the Codex saves the best you find.
- Acquire your first equipment upgrade: Wand or whatever's available.
- Clear all main content before moving on.
Phase 1 Checklist
- Understand Paragon boards fundamentals
- Sorcerer selected and functional
- Kyovashad main content cleared
- Ready for Fractured Peaks
Phase 2: Early Game (Fractured Peaks)
The snowy starting region with the campaign opening and your first Helltide exposure.
Level/Difficulty: 1-25 Key Rewards: Altars of Lilith, early Aspects, Cathedral dungeon
What to Do in Fractured Peaks
- Work on skill tree specializations. Each class unlocks a unique class mechanic, like the Sorcerer's Enchantment slots or the Necromancer's Book of the Dead. This system becomes critical from here on.
- Farm for Wand if you haven't already. It's the key upgrade for this phase.
- Run Helltides whenever one is active, the Cinder grind funds your forgotten souls and gold.
- Complete all objectives before pushing to Dry Steppes.
- Consider whether Barbarian might suit your playstyle better than Sorcerer.
Phase 2 Checklist
- skill tree specializations integrated into gameplay
- Wand acquired
- Fractured Peaks fully cleared
- Ready for Dry Steppes
Phase 3: Mid Game (Dry Steppes)
A harsh cannibal-haunted desert with strong renown rewards and waypoints.
Level/Difficulty: 25-45 Key Rewards: Renown chests, Aspect dungeons, Stronghold clears
What to Do in Dry Steppes
- Master Nightmare Dungeons. Sigils turn ordinary dungeons into tiered Nightmare versions with affixes and higher density. This unlocks a new layer of gameplay.
- Start working toward Two-Handed Sword. It's the best equipment and becomes accessible around now.
- Slot Glyphs early and level them in Nightmare Dungeons, they scale your damage faster than item rarity.
- This area is the main skill check. If you can clear it, you're ready for late game.
- Start investing in Helltide events for the tactical depth you'll need going forward.
Phase 3 Checklist
- Nightmare Dungeons mastered
- Two-Handed Sword acquired or in progress
- Dry Steppes fully cleared
- Ready for Hawezar
Phase 4: Late Game (Hawezar)
A poisonous swamp full of snakes and witches, home to dense endgame dungeons.
Level/Difficulty: 45+ Key Rewards: High-density Nightmare Dungeons, unique drops
What to Do in Hawezar
- Finalize your build. You should be running Barbarian or Sorcerer with optimized gear.
- Two-Handed Sword should be your primary. If you don't have it yet, prioritize getting it.
- Respec for cheap before level 50, lock in a plan only once Paragon points start flowing.
- tempering and masterworking optimization starts here. Small improvements compound into massive advantages.
- Farm this area for the resources needed to push into Nahantu.
Phase 4 Checklist
- Build fully optimized
- Two-Handed Sword upgraded to max
- Hawezar fully cleared
- Ready for Nahantu
Phase 5: Endgame (Nahantu)
The Vessel of Hatred jungle region with the Spiritborn class and new endgame systems.
Level/Difficulty: 60+ Key Rewards: Spiritborn unlock, Citadel co-op, Runewords
What to Do in Nahantu
- Nahantu tests everything. Come prepared with your best build and gear.
- Temper gear before masterworking, you want the right affixes present before you upgrade them.
- The endgame loop: run Nahantu, optimize gear, push harder content.
- Experiment with Necromancer for a fresh take once you've mastered the standard builds.
- This is where tempering and masterworking mastery separates good players from great ones. See our tips guide for advanced strategies.
Phase 5 Checklist
- Endgame content on farm
- Best-in-slot gear acquired
- Nahantu fully cleared
- Ready for challenge content
Common Progression Mistakes
- Chasing high item rarity over the right Aspects, a Legendary with your build aspect beats a random Unique.
- Ignoring Glyph leveling, which leaves half your Paragon damage on the table.
- Spreading Paragon points without routing toward glyph sockets and legendary nodes.
- Skipping Altars of Lilith, free permanent stats every character benefits from.
- Masterworking gear before tempering the affixes you actually want.
Key Tips for Smooth Progression
- Extract a powerful Aspect from any drop and imprint it onto better gear, the Codex saves the best you find.
- Run Helltides whenever one is active, the Cinder grind funds your forgotten souls and gold.
- Slot Glyphs early and level them in Nightmare Dungeons, they scale your damage faster than item rarity.
- Respec for cheap before level 50, lock in a plan only once Paragon points start flowing.
- Temper gear before masterworking, you want the right affixes present before you upgrade them.
